A massive gorge located near the borders of Wakayama, Nara, and Mie prefectures We took a tour of Dorokyo to enjoy its stunning scenery. As you can see in the photos, it's about a 40-minute round trip on a traditional Japanese riverboat. Instead of a large sightseeing ship, you travel on a small boat right near the water's surface, which was amazing because you could feel the sheer scale of the rock walls up close. The boarding point is the Tamakiguchi Satellite in Kumanogawa-cho, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture. We showed up without a reservation, but luckily there was an opening. They told us, "You can hop on at this time," so we only had to wait a little bit before boarding. Once on the riverboat, we slowly made our way through the deep gorge. At one point, the boat sped up so much that I was surprised, thinking, "Whoa! This boat can go that fast?!", Honestly, I didn't expect it to be this thrilling before we went, but massive rock walls towered on both sides, offering views you can only get from the river. Passing through the narrow gaps between the rocks really felt like venturing into an unexplored wilderness. The breathtaking combination of crystal-clear water, the tranquil river, and the giant rocks left a lasting impression on me. Along the way, our veteran boatman—an excellent storyteller—shared all sorts of fascinating facts, which was another highlight of the trip. He pointed out how close we were to the prefectural borders, mentioned that crossing a nearby bridge takes you to a different prefecture, and told us about a building on the cliffs that used to be a bustling tourist hub. Hearing his stories while taking in the views made the experience feel even more like a hidden adventure. It's a place where you can feel the raw power of nature up close in a peaceful atmosphere, far away from typical tourist crowds. I highly recommend it if you're looking for a slightly unique experience during your Wakayama trip. When I checked, the fare for the Dorokyo boat tour was around 3,000 yen for adults. They officially require reservations, so I recommend checking their operating status and availability before you go. Since boat tours depend on river conditions and the weather, verifying in advance will give you peace of mind. Between the incredible scenery, the thrill of the ride, and the boatman's stories, it's a place I won't soon forget. Tested the essence of the Kumano Kodo trail! This route is definitely worth rushing for~ Itinerary: Hayatama Taisha → Kamikura Shrine → Daimonzaka → Nachi Taisha → Seiganto-ji Temple → Hiryu Taisha → Nachi Waterfall → Kii-Katsuura → Kumano Hongu Taisha After researching the bus options for a long time, I decisively chose a private car, so I had full control over the time! Hiked 4 km from Daimonzaka to Nachi Waterfall, surrounded by towering trees that are super healing. I recommend at least 1.5 hours to stroll slowly. Had lunch at Kii-Katsuura Seafood Market. The taste was good but a bit pricey; one set meal wasn’t enough 😂 After eating, went to the pier for a foot bath! The lonely torii gate in the sea (Shirohebi Benzaiten Shrine) is a must-visit. You can even go into the sea and see many sea cucumbers (PS: after taking photos, they were returned to their original place, with a release video). Finally rushed to Kumano Hongu Taisha. The large torii gate is quite impressive! On the way from the old site to the new site, there’s a small supermarket where the Wagyu beef is excellent value. Bought some to add to the meal at the guesthouse—another satisfying day~ The overall route is smooth without detours, satisfying both natural scenery and cultural heritage. For the lazy ones, just lock in the private car option!

Yunomine Onsen Experience: Steeped in rustic charm, it feels like stepping into the world of "Spirited Away." · Tsuboyu: The world’s only "World Heritage" hot spring you can bathe in. Though there’s a queue (it’s best to check in first and then return to wait), pulling back the wooden curtain to soak while enjoying the view makes it all worthwhile. Staying in Shingu for a day post Kumano Kodo trek. Walked to the Kamikura Shrine precinct and enjoyed the serene greenness of the area. The first run of stairs leading up the hillside to this shrine is the steepest and most daunting, but the views over the city are totally worth the 500+ stair climb to this pretty little shrine. Just take it slow and easy and you'll reach your reward. There's a windy dirt trail that bypasses these steep stairs and leads from a flat rest point at the midpoint of the climb down to the bottom. It looks to some folks like it might be easier to take than the stairs, but I think the many tree roots on this path actually make it more dangerous, particularly if there's been rain and the soil is slick. Our legs went straight to muscle memory and enjoyed climbing up the steep steps. Spectacular views across Shingu to the sea. A very enjoyable experience. #givethanks #givethanks

Located in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the Kumano Sanzan and serves as the head shrine for approximately 3,000 Kumano shrines across Japan. If you're visiting the Kumano Sanzan and aren't driving, be prepared for at least a two-day, one-night trip. Take my experience as an example: I started my journey at Hineno Station and caught the first Limited Express Kuroshio train, arriving in Shingu City right at noon. Since I was carrying luggage, I had to head straight to the Shingu City Tourism Association outside the station to store it. Conveniently, the bus stop for Hongu Taisha is right there, allowing me to hop on the bus immediately after dropping off my bags. The bus ride from Shingu City to Hongu Taisha takes about an hour, and the scenery along the way is quite beautiful. If you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the tranquility of nature, you'll absolutely love it here. Since I visited on a weekday, there were very few tourists, making it truly peaceful and relaxing. Generally, there are two ways to get to Shingu City: First, the Limited Express Kuroshio, coming from the Osaka or Wakayama direction. Second, the Limited Express Nanki, coming from the Nagoya or Ise direction. I highly recommend purchasing a JR Pass, as it can save you a ton on transportation costs—it practically pays for itself! You can find it on the official JR-West website.

Located in Nachikatsuura, Kumano Nachi Taisha is one of the Kumano Sanzan, and it was the second stop on my Kumano Sanzan trip this time. I split my itinerary for the three grand shrines over two days. The day before, I spent half a day exploring Kumano Hongu Taisha, and stayed overnight at the Shingu Hotel in Shingu City. The next day, I took a JR train from Shingu Station to Nachi Station. Right outside Nachi Station, there's a direct bus to Nachi Taisha, which is super convenient. However, keep in mind that the trains and buses don't run very frequently, so good time management is crucial. Since I visited on a weekday, it wasn't crowded at all, making for a fantastic experience. Just a heads-up: the entire route involves climbing stairs. Along the Nachisan approach, there are several restaurants and snack shops where you can take a breather and grab a bite to recharge. You can also go check out the famous Nachi Falls. Unfortunately, since it's winter, the water volume was relatively low, but it is definitely still worth a visit!

Arriving at Kumano Hayatama Taisha, the final stop on my Kumano Sanzan itinerary, I guess you could say I've unlocked the Kumano Sanzan achievement, haha, the shrine houses over 1,200 items designated as national treasures, along with a sacred Nagi tree that's over a thousand years old. As mentioned in my previous post about the Shingu Castle Ruins, it's just a 10-minute walk from the ruins to Hayatama Taisha, the Kumano River right next to Hayatama Taisha, serves as the natural border between Wakayama and Mie Prefectures. I stayed in Shingu City for two days, and you won't see many pedestrians on the streets, · et alone tourists, there are absolutely no massive crowds here, so you can truly take your time to appreciate and savor every spot, however, keep in mind that local shops close quite early, · uckily, if you're basing yourself around the Shingu Hotel, there are two 24-hour convenience stores within a 5-minute walk. One last thing to note, this Kumano Sanzan trip requires a significant investment of time, is it ultimately worth it? That really depends on personal preference.

As mentioned in my previous article, this trip focused on visiting the Kumano Sanzan, and since they are located in the same city as the Kumano Hayatama Taisha, I decided to drop by the Shingu Castle Ruins and Asuka Shrine as well. My first stop was Asuka Shrine, a relatively small shrine, with a World Heritage stone monument standing right outside. It only took about 15 minutes to look around. By the way, you can also find the Shingu Castle stamp here, specifically inside the Museum of History and Folklore. A short 10-minute walk from there will take you to the Shingu Castle Ruins. There are quite a few stairs to climb up to the castle. On my way up, I occasionally spotted local residents, using the area for their daily workouts. Once you reach the foundation of the castle keep, you'll be treated to a panoramic view of the surrounding scenery. It takes about 30 minutes to explore the entire site. If you're ever visiting Shingu City, these spots are definitely worth a quick detour.

This journey in the footsteps of the three-legged divine bird, the Yatagarasu, is truly a profound conversation between nature and human stamina! On the afternoon of day one, I headed straight for the "final boss"—Kumano Nachi Taisha. After conquering a thigh-burning flight of stone steps, the legendary Nachi Waterfall and the vermilion three-story pagoda perfectly framed together, looking so stunning that I instantly forgot I was just panting like a dog. Looking back at the "backward-glancing" Yatagarasu, I felt like it was teasing my weak legs. On the morning of day two, I shifted to the flatter grounds of Kumano Hayatama Taisha. The brilliant, vibrant red architecture was an absolute feast for the camera, and I quickly prayed to the divine bird holding a Nagi leaf in its beak for a safe journey ahead. The noon grand finale on day two was the historical heavyweight: Kumano Hongu Taisha. The Yatagarasu here proudly spreads its wings forward, radiating majestic energy. Stepping into this ancient wooden shrine, my body and soul were instantly cleansed by the refreshing forest air and a profoundly sacred vibe. The ultimate highlight was walking over to Oyunohara, where Japan's largest giant torii gate, towering into the clouds, completely blew my mind. After a day and a half, my legs have turned to jelly, but with the blessings of these three divine birds guiding the way, I feel like I'll never lose my direction in life again!

I just can't stop checking off World Heritage sites! Today, I visited my final stop, Asuka Shrine. The rustic stone torii gate and giant stone monument against the evening clouds, framed by the offering flags lining the approach, give off the ultimate traditional Japanese shrine vibe. The atmosphere here is incredibly serene. With no huge tourist crowds to elbow through, you can enjoy a genuinely relaxing stroll. Walking further in along the stone-paved path, I never expected to stumble upon a super hidden surprise tucked away in the shade: the Shrine of Xu Fu (Jofuku no Miya)! That's right—the exact same Xu Fu from our history textbooks, whom Emperor Qin Shi Huang sent across the sea to find the elixir of immortal life! Legend has it that he landed and settled right in this area, and the locals even built a small shrine to worship him as a deity. It feels so surreal! A weathered, ancient stone path leads up to the shrine, creating a cross-temporal encounter with a 2,000-year-old historical legend. The mystery level is absolutely off the charts. I highly recommend that when you visit Asuka Shrine, you make a slight detour to say hi and check in at Xu Fu's shrine. It's guaranteed to be the coolest and most brag-worthy hidden gem of your entire trip!

OMG! The most thrilling and absolutely craziest spot we hit on this Kumano trip has to be Kamikura Shrine! From a distance, the massive boulder known as Gotobiki-iwa looks like it's just hanging off the edge of a cliff, with a bright vermilion shrine wedged right underneath it. It seriously looks like it could come tumbling down at any second. The visual impact is absolutely off the charts—it's unbelievable! But catching a glimpse of this marvel in person comes at a serious price. The second I got to the entrance and saw that "stairway to heaven"—538 jagged, natural stone steps at a steep 45-degree angle—I almost turned right back around. I literally had to scramble on my hands and knees to make it to the top! Even though the climb nearly took me out and left my legs turning to jelly, the moment I reached the summit, it was all worth it. Seeing that mysterious giant rock wrapped in a sacred Shinto shimenawa rope, paired with a breathtaking panoramic view of Shingu City and the Pacific Ocean, made every drop of sweat totally worth it! Getting a photo here will definitely give you bragging rights for an entire year!

Right after visiting Hayatama Taisha, I immediately rushed over to check off this nearby grand Torii gate, legendary for being the "largest in Japan"! Towering at 11 stories high, the sheer scale and jaw-dropping impact of seeing it in person are absolutely off the charts. You feel as tiny as an ant standing underneath it, and you seriously have to max out your phone's wide-angle lens just to squeeze the whole thing into the frame! Right in front of the gate, there's also a super badass statue of a giant black crow. Word has it that this is "Yatagarasu," a three-legged divine local guide sent by the gods, which is incredibly unique. This spot is actually the former site of the Kumano Hongu Taisha. Even though only the giant Torii gate remains today, the surrounding scenery—framed by lush rice paddies and mountains—is as picture-perfect as a painting. Whether you're spiritual or not, coming here just for the "Japan's biggest" flex to snap some epic pics and boost your feed is totally worth it!

I finally made it to Wakayama's super famous World Heritage Site, "Kumano Hayatama Taisha"! The moment you arrive, you'll be absolutely blown away by the dazzling vermilion buildings. Set against a clear blue sky, it’s incredibly photogenic—every random snap turns out amazing! The coolest part is the massive sacred rope (shimenawa) at the entrance; posing underneath it makes you look so tiny. Inside, there's a magnificent 1,000-year-old sacred tree. Legend has it that people in the old days would pick its leaves to use as amulets for safety and finding true love. I totally jumped on the bandwagon and said a little prayer, hoping for smooth sailing this year! Compared to the other two Kumano shrines, this one is by far the most accessible—no grueling hikes that turn your legs to jelly! I highly recommend crossing this spot off your bucket list when you visit Wakayama. It'll definitely blow up your social media feeds!

On this railway journey connecting the sacred mountains and seas of Wakayama with Ise in Mie, I took the Kuroshio Express for the first leg, and for the second leg, departed from Kii-Katsuura Station on JR Central's newest Limited Express "Nanki." The soft, wood-toned design inside the cabin instantly puts you at ease the moment you step aboard. The new hybrid power system performs remarkably well, offering a ride as smooth and quiet as an electric train—completely shattering old stereotypes of diesel trains on non-electrified sections. Situated on the mountainside of Gongen-yama, it is reached by climbing 538 steep stone steps to the massive rock formation known as "Gotobiki-iwa."
