Fernando’s car was spotless and very comfortable, with excellent A/C. He possesses extensive knowledge of Portugal’s sites and history, and his English is impeccable. He guided us to Tomar, showed us around the Convent of Christ, and gave a tour of the town. We shared lunch together before visiting the Castle of Almourol. Regrettably, we had to decline the chance to visit a Middle Ages town due to my knee issue and prior walking. Fernando is an outstanding guide—highly recommended! Thank you!

✨ Why you should see a torada at least once ☝️‼️It's not about cruelty, but about the balance of power and art, about respect for tradition and risk taken to the point of aesthetics. The torada is a Portugal rarely featured in guidebooks: passionate, proud, and very much alive. 🎪 Torada: The Portuguese Soul in the Arena The torada is Portugal's answer to the Spanish bullfight, but with an important difference: in the classic torada, the bull is not killed. It is not so much a brutal competition as a ritual, where skill, respect for the animal, and spectacle are essential. 📜 History and Origin The tradition has its roots in the Middle Ages: at first, the fights were a pastime for the nobility, and bulls were released into the streets during city festivals. In the 18th century, the torada became more organized. A key turning point occurred in 1836, when Queen Maria II banned bull slaughter in the arena—thus establishing the modern image of the torada as a spectacle. 🎭 Traditions and How It Happens There are two main characters in the arena: the cavaleiro—a horseman in formal attire who demonstrates horsemanship and taunts the bull with a lance; the forcados—a group of foot fighters who, in the finale, confront the bull unarmed and attempt to seize him by the horns to immobilize him. This is not chaos, but a clearly structured dramaturgy: every gesture, bow, and movement is part of the ritual. 🔥 Features that make the torada unique The bull: After the performance, he is returned to the farm. The costumes are like something out of an opera. The cavaleiro enters in an embroidered jacket, gloves, and a hat; this is part of the aesthetic. The forcades use bare hands. This is the most intense moment: a group of eight people must subdue the bull without harming it. Music and Atmosphere. Traditional Portuguese music is often played, and the audience reacts emotionally—applauding, whistling, and cheering. 🗓 When and where does the toradas take place The toradas season lasts from approximately April to October, peaking in summer and during local holidays. The most famous places: Lisbon – the Campo Pequeno bullring (a beautiful building in the Neo-Moorish style, a landmark in its own right). Tomar, Santarém, and Abrantes – cities where the toradas remain an important part of urban culture. Festivals in smaller towns – there the shows are often more authentic and less touristy. #trip2026 #portugal #tripmoment

On our way to Porto, we decided to stop by Tomar to see the 12th century Templar castle & the aqueduct of Pegoes. This is the last castle we will want to see for the year. 🤣 In the center of the 16-sided hall is an octagonal structure that supports the vault and serves as an altar, The Rotondas. "rotondas" of Templar in the center is so different from any church we have ever seen. It is Huge! There are many symbolic meanings in the paintings surrounding the rotondas and they are absolutely stunning. 🏖️Environment/Facilities: No tourists/Hidden gem

As a big fan of the history of the Knights of Templar, visiting the Convent of Christ in Tomar was a huge highlight of my trip to Portugal. The history there is fascinating—this place was once a Templar stronghold, and you can really feel it when you walk through the halls. If you’re into history or the Templars, this is a must-visit. #europetrip #portugal #Tomar

Manueline style is a unique architectural style that emerged in Portugal in the late 15th to mid-16th century due to its strong emphasis on developing maritime power, named after the ruling monarch at the time, Manuel I. Its architectural features lie in the twisted cylindrical shape, royal emblem, and intricately decorated window frames, as well as the use of natural imagery such as shells and anchors embedded in stones. The most representative examples include the Belém Tower and Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon, the Jesus Monastery in Tomar, the Alcobaça Monastery, and the Batalha Monastery. In addition, the influence of Moorish architecture is also a major characteristic of Manueline style, with the Sintra National Palace as its representative building.
