Just returned from a small town in Yichun, Jiangxi Province, and I’m absolutely impressed! The whole town has a slow-paced atmosphere, the locals are incredibly charming, and the surrounding nature is raw and stunning. What makes this place special: Authentic ancient city + traditional ancient villages with stories, famous historical figures, mountain and water views. Local cuisine with unique flavors, fewer crowds, and plenty of open spaces for photography. This might be the most low-key city in Jiangxi, but it’s so beautiful that I almost don’t want to share it with anyone. 📅 4-Day 3-Night Itinerary ✅ Day 1 — Wanzai Ancient City ➜ Wentang Ancient Well 🔹 Wanzai Ancient City(万载古城) Gan-style ancient city known as the "Hometown of Fireworks & Lilies." It boasts cultural heritage like "Dragon Meat Tea" and is perfect for photography. 🔹 Wentang Ancient Well(温汤古井) – Over 800 years old – Warm steam rises from the surface year-round – Nicknamed "Millennium Hot Spring Temple" – Locals often bring buckets to fetch water and relax by soaking their feet near the pavilion. ✅ Day 2 — Qixing Ridge Skiing(七星岭滑雪场) A ski resort in Jiangxi where you don’t have to travel far to Changbai Mountain to enjoy skiing! ✅ Day 3 — Mingyue Mountain ➜ Mingyue Thousand Years 🔹 Mingyue Mountain(明月山) Features 12 peaks reaching 1,200 meters, deep valleys, and unique waterfalls. Moon Lake resembles a heavenly pool. Qingyun Staircase looks like a giant dragon winding its way. Icefall resembles a frozen river cascading down the mountain, akin to the "Milky Way" descending. 🔹 Mingyue Thousand Years Sentiment(明月千古情) A beautiful cultural-themed street with a show called "Millennium Mingyue," giving a feeling of traveling back in time. ✅ Day 4 — Yangshan Chan Temple ➜ Nanra Ancient Village 🔹 Yangshan Chan Temple(杨山禅寺) – Over 1,000 years old – Built in terraced layers following the land’s contours. 🔹 Nanra Ancient Village(南阮古村) – Ancient village – Features an 800-year-old bridge – A thousand-year-old ginkgo tree – Traditional wooden houses, smoky kitchen fires, and ancient stone staircases – Offers a rural Chinese vibe with dried goods, smoked meat, and free-range chickens wandering around. 🌶️ Food Highlights Yichun cuisine tends to be spicy, such as Wanzai Red Pork, Fengcheng Frozen Rice, Yifeng Pork, Tonggu Braised Pine Pork, and more.

Essential travel information The scenic area is open from 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with last entry at 4:30 PM. We recommend arriving early and setting aside a full day for your visit. The best time to visit is from March–November. In spring and summer, the vegetation is lush and the lake water is emerald green; in autumn, the forests are colorful and the climate is comfortable; in summer, it's a great place to escape the heat, with high negative oxygen ion levels and a cool, refreshing feel. For transportation, driving is highly recommended. Navigate to "Tianzhufeng Scenic Area Visitor Center," which has a free parking lot. It takes about 1.5–2 hours to drive from Nanchang and about 2 hours from Changsha. Public transportation is not very convenient, so driving is the best option. We recommend purchasing tickets online in advance. The basic package includes admission and a round-trip boat ride. High-altitude glass rafting and water activities are extra and can be purchased as needed. Students and seniors are eligible for discounted tickets; please bring relevant identification. Recommended itinerary (main route for a one-day trip, no backtracking) The main feature of Tianzhufeng Scenic Area is that you must take a boat to travel between the island piers. The boat ride is an essential part of the tour. As you cruise across Jiulong Lake, you'll see continuous Danxia landforms on both sides—perfect for stunning landscape photos. 1. Visitor Center > Boat Pier: After ticket inspection, head to the pier to board the boat. Cruise across Jiulong Lake and enjoy the view of Danxia rock formations like Elephant Trunk Mountain along the way. You will arrive at Tianzhufeng Pier in about 20 minutes. 2. Climb Tianzhufeng Main Peak + Lingshi Temple: After disembarking, start your hike. There are 365 steps to the top, with some sections being narrow and steep. It takes about 25–30 minutes to reach the summit one way. From the top, you can enjoy a 360° panoramic view of Jiulong Lake, with red Danxia cliffs embracing the emerald water. It offers a wide view and is the best photo spot in the entire scenic area. Lingshi Temple is located in a cave halfway up the mountain. This ancient temple is hidden within the rock and has a long history. Many visitors come here to pray and make wishes, and it's a great place to rest during your climb. 3. Fun Island for photos and leisure: After descending, take a boat to Fun Island, the core area for family activities. It features a popular pink sand beach, a large lawn, and various adventure play facilities. It's a great place for camping, relaxing, and taking atmospheric photos. If you like thrills, try the high-altitude glass rafting, which winds through the forest for a cool and stress-relieving experience. Water activities like water Ferraris and shark boats are perfect for thrill-seekers and can be purchased as needed. 4. Jiulong Waterfall: Head to the waterfall pier to see the 78-meter-high Jiulong Waterfall. The water cascades down from a cliff shaped like a dragon's head, creating a mist. Standing at the bottom of the waterfall in summer feels exceptionally cool, and if the sun is out, you might even see a rainbow—it's truly spectacular. 5. Take the boat back to the Visitor Center to end your trip. Route tips: If you have average stamina, you don't need to visit every spot. If traveling with seniors or children, prioritize the boat ride, Fun Island, and Jiulong Waterfall. You can choose whether or not to climb the main peak; there's no need to force yourself to reach the summit. Dining and accommodation Dining: There are few options for light meals inside the scenic area, so we recommend bringing some snacks and drinking water. After leaving the scenic area, head to Da'an Town to taste Tonggu Hakka specialties like Tonggu Baoyuan, Hakka tofu, and local dishes. They are authentic and offer great value. Accommodation: A one-day trip can be completed on the same day. If you plan to stay for two days and one night, we recommend staying at a homestay or hotel in Da'an Town, which is close to the scenic area and convenient for travel. For a wellness and leisure experience, you can also choose the nearby Tangli Hot Spring Resort to relax after your visit. Travel tips 1. Some mountain steps are steep, so be sure to wear non-slip hiking shoes; do not wear flip-flops or high heels. Bring a sun hat, sunscreen, and mosquito repellent, as there are many insects in the forest. 2. Boats operate on a schedule. During holidays, wait times may be longer, so try to visit during off-peak hours. When on the boat, please sit steadily, do not lean out, and pay attention to water safety. 3. Some areas on the summit and boardwalks are not shaded. If traveling with seniors or children, climb according to your physical ability and stop to rest when tired. 4. Please protect the Danxia landscape. Do not carve on the rocks, and please take your trash with you. Recommended for Tianzhufeng is not a high-intensity mountain climbing destination, and the overall difficulty is moderate. Hiking enthusiasts can challenge themselves to reach the summit; families with children will love the Fun Island beach and play area; and those who enjoy landscape photography will find the boat cruise and Jiulong Waterfall to be excellent spots. It's a perfect place for a short weekend getaway to escape the city, enjoy the Danxia landforms and clear water, and get some fresh air.

Bacon School was established in the eighth year of the Republic of China (1919) and is the first vocational school in China set up in a rural area to train agricultural technicians. The school features a two-story brick and wood building combining Chinese and Western styles, with European-style arched corridors on the east, south, and west sides, and traditional Chinese wooden structures on the north side. The second floor has a continuous corridor around all sides, and the cement on the upper floor retains the traditional Chinese characters “Yifeng Bacon Vocational School.” The building covers about 200㎡ and is modest in size, standing out prominently among the surrounding Gan-style ancestral halls. The main structure is well preserved and open to the public after restoration, with the interior restored to its original classroom setup. It witnessed the great historical transition of China’s education system from the imperial examination to modern learning and represents an early attempt and practice of Western learning spreading eastward. The school’s motto and mission are “Cultivate self-reliance and responsibility; roots and branches come from you.” The founder was Liu Huacheng, a pioneer of new learning in Tianbao and a graduate of Waseda University in Japan. Students came from Yifeng, Tonggu, Nanchang, and Hunan. It is a key cultural relic protection unit in Jiangxi Province.

This 401-meter-high mountain, with its unique Danxia landform, beautiful lake and mountain scenery, and rich historical and cultural heritage, attracts countless visitors eager to explore. I was fortunate to set foot on this magical land and embark on a profound dialogue with nature and history. First Impressions of Tianzhu Peak: Awe and Amazement Combined At dawn, when the first rays of sunlight bathe Tianzhu Peak, the entire mountain seems to be gilded with a golden glow, appearing especially solemn and mysterious. We boarded a boat and slowly sailed from Jiulong Lake toward Tianzhu Peak. Jiulong Lake is broad and elongated, embraced by green mountains on both sides, with crystal-clear waters. As the boat moved forward, the lake and mountain scenery gradually unfolded like a beautiful painting slowly revealing itself before our eyes. After disembarking, we first visited Elephant Trunk Hill. Located to the left of Tianzhu Peak, Elephant Trunk Hill is the second tallest stone peak after Tianzhu Peak. Viewed head-on, it resembles a narrow sky slit; from the side, it looks like an elephant’s trunk, lifelike and astonishing. Although it appears somewhat rugged and abstract compared to the Elephant Trunk Hill in Guilin, this primitive beauty showcases the marvels of nature’s craftsmanship. Climbing Tianzhu Peak: Challenge and Beauty Together We ascended the winding mountain path, gradually approaching Tianzhu Peak. The path was shaded by lush trees and filled with the fragrance of flowers, refreshing the mind and spirit. Although the trail was steep in places, each step was full of challenge and anticipation. Along the way, we passed Ling Shi An and Yixian Tian, each spot captivating us deeply. Ling Shi An is a natural rock cave shelter formed by huge boulders on the mountainside. Inside, it is neatly arranged without feeling cramped. Spring water flows down the cliff into a small pool for drinking, and ancient cliff inscriptions can be found on the boulders. Since the Southern Song Dynasty, incense has burned continuously here. People have lived peacefully under the blessing of the "spiritual stone," creating a tranquil and harmonious atmosphere. Yixian Tian is a narrow passage formed by two giant rocks standing opposite each other, with the narrowest point only 0.8 meters wide, revealing just a sliver of sky above. Passing through Yixian Tian feels like entering a new world, with the scenery opening up and refreshing the soul. Finally, we reached the summit of Tianzhu Peak. Standing at the top, we gazed far and wide: the Mufu Mountain Range rolled like waves, and Tonggu County spread out like a chessboard. The mountain breeze carried the sound of pine waves into our ears, making us feel as if we were in a fairyland. At this moment, I truly experienced the grandeur and majesty of "looking down on all other mountains." Exploring Tianzhu Peak: A Blend of History and Culture Tianzhu Peak is not only naturally beautiful but also rich in historical and cultural significance. Legend has it that Zhang Guolao, one of the Eight Immortals, once passed through here. While tying his donkey and emptying his purse at "Shoe Drying Point," he accidentally lost his magical conch in the grass. Strangely, the conch fell to the mortal world and grew rapidly with the wind, reportedly growing a thousand units a day and breaking through the sky in ten days. The Jade Emperor was alarmed and sent the Thunder God to subdue it to ensure the safety of Heaven. On that day, the wind rose, clouds gathered, the sky darkened, heavy rain poured, and thunder struck, splitting a large hole in the spiritual stone’s belly, stopping its growth and forming Tianzhu Peak. Besides this beautiful legend, at the foot of Tianzhu Peak stands the thousand-year-old Tianzhu Temple. Founded during the Tang Dynasty’s Zhenguan era, it was once one of the "Three Great Zen Forests of Jiangnan," alongside Donglin Temple in Lushan and Yuelu Temple in Changsha. The temple houses statues of Maitreya Buddha and Shakyamuni, as well as precious artifacts like the "Record of the Renovation of Tianzhu Temple" written by Li Rongbi, a Qing Dynasty Tonggu scholar. These relics not only witness the temple’s historical changes but also reflect the deep bond between the local people and the temple. Savoring Tonggu Cuisine: A Feast for the Palate After a full day of touring, our stomachs began to rumble. We headed to a farmhouse restaurant within the scenic area to taste local delicacies. Tonggu’s cuisine mainly features mountain treasures and wild flavors, with unique tastes that linger in the memory. We ordered braised pork, roasted rooster, stir-fried rice noodles, and amaranth soup among other specialties. These dishes were not only delicious but also nutritious, satisfying our appetites fully. Farewell to Tianzhu Peak: Reluctance and Fondness Time flew by, and soon our journey to Tianzhu Peak was coming to an end. Standing on the boat, I looked back once more at this beautiful land, my heart filled with reluctance and affection. Tianzhu Peak, you are like a gentle lady, conquering every visitor’s heart with your beauty and kindness. Here, I felt the magic and charm of nature, witnessed the vicissitudes of history, and savored the richness and depth of local cuisine. I know this farewell is only for the sake of a future reunion. I believe that one day, I will return to this land to experience your beauty and warmth once again. Tianzhu Peak, you are forever the poetry and distant place in my heart, and I will cherish your beauty forever. 1. The summit viewing platform offers a panoramic view of Jiulong Lake’s "giant dragon lying on the waves." · Ling Shi An Blessing: A thousand-year-old ancient temple hidden in a rock cave on the mountainside of Tianzhu Peak, founded in the Southern Song Dynasty. ◆ Where is Tangli? Tangli is located in Dadun Town, Tonggu County, in the heart of the Luoxiao Mountains, at an altitude of over 600 meters. In ancient times, there was a village here with a hot water well. Hot water was traditionally called "Tang," and the small village was called "Li," hence the name Tangli. The well still exists today, with a constant water temperature of 72°C. It is a medium sulfur hot spring rich in more than 20 minerals. The entire resort area is covered by 96% forest. Once inside, your phone signal drops by one bar, but honestly, in a place like this, a weaker signal is actually a good thing. · My Hot Spring Routine Don’t rush to soak as soon as you arrive. First, take a walk around the resort. There is a forest trail winding around the valley, about 40 minutes long, passing several natural spring outlets. Some are steaming, with water bubbling out from cracks in the rocks. One spring is enclosed and made into a free foot bath. Sitting on a wooden bench and dipping your feet in, the water temperature is just over 40 degrees Celsius. After soaking for ten minutes, the soles of your feet turn red and warm. After the walk, then soak. There are more than a dozen outdoor hot spring pools of various sizes scattered throughout the forest. Each pool is separated by bamboo fences and shrubs, providing decent privacy. My favorite pool is the innermost one, surrounded on three sides by cedar trees, with a small patch of sky visible overhead. A few leaves, from unknown trees, float on the water’s surface. In the evening, fog begins to rise in the valley, slowly descending from the treetops. Soaking in the hot water while watching the mist flow around you, your body feels warm but your face cool—this temperature contrast is truly magical. · Some Honest Thoughts The hot springs in Tangli are not the fancy Japanese or Nordic-style spas with top-tier facilities. The hardware isn’t luxurious. But what it offers is a sense of wilderness. While soaking, you can hear birds singing, insects chirping, and the sound of streams flowing through the valley. Occasionally, you hear the crisp snap of a branch breaking under an unknown animal’s foot. At night, soaking in the open-air pools, the stars overhead are so numerous it feels almost unreal. I haven’t seen this many stars in the city for a long time. One small detail left a deep impression on me: next to the pools are bamboo cup holders with disposable paper cups and thermos flasks filled with freshly brewed ginger tea. The ginger tea is perfectly spicy, warming you from your stomach all the way to your hands and feet. · What to Do When Not Soaking You can visit Tianzhu Peak, about a 20-minute drive from Tangli. Or you can do nothing at all. The resort has caves to explore, mountain trails to hike, and a lawn perfect for lying down and daydreaming. I spent an entire afternoon lying on the lawn, watching clouds drift from one mountain to another. A dragonfly landed on my finger for about ten seconds. Those ten seconds felt more effective than any spa treatment I’ve had in the city. · A Few Practical Tips Driving from Changsha, Nanchang, or Wuhan takes about two and a half hours via the Hangchang Expressway. Self-driving is recommended as public transportation to this location is inconvenient. Don’t eat too much before soaking. On my first day, I had a full meal at noon and then went to soak. Halfway through, I felt bloated and uncomfortable, so I had to rest for half an hour before continuing. Bring a bathrobe or a large towel. The mountain wind is strong when walking between pools, and being wet can make you cold. Accommodation 🏨 Tonggu Tangli Hot Spring Hotel A Han and Tang dynasty architectural complex hidden in the forest, offering two room types: South Garden and North Garden. The forest treehouse series features private hot springs and floor-to-ceiling windows. You can soak in your own room at night and go straight to sleep without competing for space in the public pools. 🏨 Tonggu Tangli Tangju Forest Hot Spring Homestay Located in the heart of the resort, the cave sensory area is a fun surprise. There are also game rooms and tea rooms, ideal for those who want a relaxed stay and to rest nearby after soaking. 🏨 Tonggu Xiujiangyuan Ecological Resort Hotel Not far from Tianzhu Peak and Tangli, this hotel is nestled by the mountains and water. The restaurant uses many local mountain ingredients, perfect for those planning to visit both scenic spots. 🏨 Tonggu Jiuling Mountain Residence Resort Hotel At a higher altitude, you won’t need air conditioning on summer nights. The architecture reflects traditional Ganxi Hakka style with wooden beams and stone walls, full of historic charm. Ideal for those wanting a quiet retreat for a couple of days.

Honestly, before visiting Tianzhu Peak, I spent a long time researching and still couldn’t figure out what made it special. After going, I realized that the charm of this place lies entirely on the water’s surface. How you enter the mountain determines what you see Tianzhu Peak isn’t about hiking; it’s about taking a boat. From the visitor center to Jiulong Lake Pier, there’s a shuttle bus ride. Once you reach the pier, you switch to a tour boat. Five minutes into the boat ride, you’ll understand why this scenic area doesn’t rely on hiking—the bright red Danxia cliffs rise straight out of the water, the mountains are reflected on the surface, and the colors deepen with the water’s tint. The whole scene is as rich as an oil painting that hasn’t dried yet. As the boat moves across the lake, the rocks on both sides constantly change shape. One huge rock that looks like a finger juts out from the cliff; the guide called it the “Immortal’s Finger Pointing the Way.” I’m usually indifferent to such names, but that rock itself is truly extraordinary and looks great from every angle. The Jiulong Lake boat ticket costs 50 yuan. In 2026, high school seniors can enter for free with their exam admission ticket. Regular adult admission is 60 yuan. What to do after getting off the boat The boat stops at several points where you can disembark and walk along trails. There’s a roughly 3-kilometer lakeside trail that’s flat and easy to walk. When I visited at the end of June, the mountain temperature was about 21°C (70°F). Wearing short sleeves felt a bit chilly, so I recommend bringing a light jacket. The most surprising thing on the trail was a scent: wild mugwort. The mountains around Tonggu are full of wild mugwort, and June is when it’s growing most vigorously. Every few steps, you catch a spicy yet sweet aroma mixed with the damp earthy smell of forest leaf mold. This year, the scenic area held a Dragon Boat Festival lakeside garden event. Visitors received fresh mugwort bundles at the entrance, and there were picking and floral DIY activities around the lake. The commercial vibe was light, and I found this level of event very acceptable. Photo tips The best time to take photos at Tianzhu Peak is around 3 to 4 p.m. The sun leans west, shining from the canyon’s west side, turning the Danxia cliffs a deep orange-red that reflects on the emerald lake, creating a strong contrast. Recommended photo spots: the stern on the second deck of the boat, where you can use a telephoto lens to compress the lake and distant mountains; and the platform at the end of the Heavenly Ladder trail, where you can look back at the lake and mountain group in a shot with very few people around. A little unrelated story about Tianzhu Peak On the drive from Changsha, the driver kept playing a DJ version of “The Sun That Never Sets on the Grassland.” The electronic drum beats mixed with folk melodies got stuck in my head for the entire two-hour ride. Five-star level earworm. What to eat in Tonggu Tonggu is a purely Hakka county, and the food tends to be salty and savory. One local dish is called “Baoyuan,” similar to large tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) but with a savory filling. It’s stuffed with cured meat, shiitake mushrooms, and diced bamboo shoots wrapped in glutinous rice skin, steamed until translucent. When you bite into it, the filling’s oil flows out. Also, Tonggu has many Polygonatum (huangjing) products, like Polygonatum tea and candied Polygonatum. The taste isn’t stunning but is very healthy. I bought two packs of candied Polygonatum at a small shop near the scenic area entrance and finished them as snacks on the way. Accommodations 🏨 Tonggu Tangli Hot Spring Hotel Located in the heart of the resort area, this Han-Tang style architectural complex has 219 rooms. The package including hot springs and breakfast offers great value. The 72°C natural sulfur hot spring leaves your skin silky smooth. Soaking in the outdoor hot spring pool in the mountains while watching mist rise through the cedar forest is an indescribable experience. 🏨 Tonggu Tangli Tangju Forest Hot Spring Homestay Located inside the hot spring resort, the owner teaches you how to use mugwort packs for shoulder and neck relief. The breakfast soup noodles are delicious. After soaking in the hot springs, it’s just a few steps back to your room, making the flow very comfortable. 🏨 Tonggu Tianzhu Peak International Resort Hotel Right next to the Tianzhu Peak scenic area, the view from the room in the early morning when the lake is misty looks like an ink painting. Perfect for those who want to explore Tianzhu Peak thoroughly. The restaurant serves authentic Hakka cuisine. 🏨 Tonggu Qixingling Forest Resort Hotel Near the Qixingling Ski Resort, at a higher altitude, it’s very cool in summer and offers skiing in winter. The forest coverage is incredibly dense, and the negative ion content is off the charts.
