Ulm travel guide and discussion

🧜♀️The legend of the mermaid who couldn't laugh The most famous story of Blautopf is about the Beautiful Lau (Die Schöne Lau). She was a mermaid who couldn't laugh and gave birth to stillborn children. Her husband, the King of the Black Sea, exiled her to Blautopf until she laughed five times. They say she never managed, and her tears still colour the water blue. 💎Why is the water so blue? The secret lies in physics and geology. The water is saturated with tiny particles of limestone that scatter light. The blue rays of the spectrum are reflected back to the surface, creating that incredible colour. It's the second-largest karst spring in Germany discharging up to 2,300 litres of water per second. 💠The main mystery: a bottomless lake People tried to measure the depth of Blautopf as early as 1718, but the plumb line showed only 19 metres. Modern data suggests 22 metres, but locals have considered the lake bottomless for centuries. Legend says a mermaid lives in it, tearing measuring ropes and dragging them to the bottom. 🎒What to do by the lake · Walk around — the lake is in the centre of the old town, next to Blaubeuren Monastery (Kloster Blaubeuren). Surrounding it are picturesque streets and historic houses. · Have coffee at Café am Blautopf — the café stands right by the water, with the best view of the lake and the historic forge with its mill wheel. Guests warn: it gets crowded on weekends. · See the waterfall — if water levels allow, you can catch a small waterfall formed by the height drop. ⭐️Practical information · Where: Blaubeuren, Baden-Württemberg, 16 km from Ulm. · Entry: Free, open 24/7. · How to get there: From Stuttgart by train to Ulm (~45 minutes), then a regional train to Blaubeuren (~11 minutes). From the station to the lake — about 10 minutes on foot. · How much time to allow: 30–60 minutes is enough to walk around and take photos. · Where to stay: In Blaubeuren there are Holiday & Stay Blautopf Apartments right in the centre, 57 metres from the lake. Clean, cosy, with a kitchen and balcony. #travel2026 #naturalwonders

Germany has plenty of famous cities, but some of the places that stayed with me were much smaller — quiet old towns, half-timbered houses, clear blue water and castles surrounded by forests. Here are 5 places I’d put on a Southern Germany itinerary if you love storybook scenery: 1. Blaubeuren 💧 Probably the most unexpected one on my list. Blaubeuren is home to the famous Blautopf, with incredibly clear blue-green water surrounded by autumn trees and historic buildings. It genuinely feels a little unreal. 2. Bad Urach 🍁 A beautiful old town with traditional half-timbered houses, flower-filled façades and plenty of nature nearby. It’s the kind of place where simply walking around is part of the experience. 3. Lichtenstein 🏰 If castles are your thing, this one belongs on the list. Lichtenstein Castle sits dramatically above the landscape and looks almost like something from a fairytale illustration. 4. Esslingen am Neckar 🏘️ Historic streets, traditional half-timbered buildings and a beautifully preserved old-town atmosphere. It has that classic German charm without feeling like a giant tourist attraction. 5. Ulm 🌿 A little different from the others because it’s a city, but its historic areas and riverside atmosphere make it worth including. It’s a nice reminder that you don’t always need to head somewhere tiny to find beautiful corners. ✨ What I love about these places: they show a quieter side of Germany — the kind of places where you can slow down, wander without a strict plan, and just enjoy the scenery. Tucked along the banks of the Danube in Baden-Württemberg, Ulm is a beautiful city where medieval charm, impressive architecture, riverside scenery, and modern design come together. It may not be Germany’s most famous destination, but that is exactly what makes exploring Ulm so rewarding. The city’s unmistakable landmark is the Ulm Minster (Ulmer Münster), home to Germany’s tallest church tower at 161.53 metres. Standing in the vast Münsterplatz, the Gothic masterpiece creates an incredible backdrop and offers spectacular views over Ulm, Neu-Ulm, and the Danube from its tower. Just a short walk away lies the enchanting Fishermen’s and Tanners’ Quarter (Fischerviertel). Narrow cobblestone lanes, wooden half-timbered houses, little bridges, canals, and buildings leaning over the water give this historic neighbourhood an almost fairytale atmosphere. The quarter developed around the Blau River and was historically home to fishermen, sailors, and tanners. One of its most memorable sights is the famous Crooked House (Schiefes Haus), a wonderfully tilted historic building beside the water. The surrounding streets are perfect for a relaxed walk, photography, cafés, and simply enjoying Ulm’s old-world atmosphere. Beyond the old quarter, Ulm offers a fascinating contrast between medieval heritage and modern architecture. The Town Hall, city walls, historic towers, Stadthaus, Central Library, museums, and contemporary buildings all contribute to the city's unique character. 🌊 Best experience: Start around Münsterplatz, explore the old town, wander through the Fishermen’s Quarter, follow the riverside toward the Danube, and finish with a peaceful evening walk as the historic buildings begin to glow in the soft light. Ulm feels like a city that rewards slow travel — a place where every narrow alley, riverside bridge, historic façade, and church tower tells part of its story. ❤️ 📍 Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany ✨ Highlights: Ulm Minster • Fishermen’s & Tanners’ Quarter • Crooked House • Danube • Historic Old Town • Town Hall • City Walls #Ulm #Germany #UlmGermany #BadenWürttemberg #VisitGermany #GermanyTravel #GermanCities #UlmMinster #Fischerviertel #Danube #OldTown #EuropeTravel #TravelPhotography #BeautifulDestinations #TravelEurope

Ulm is located in the southeastern part of Baden-Württemberg, Germany, nestled along the banks of the Danube River (Donau). Facing Neu-Ulm in Bavaria across the river, it has a population of approximately 130,000 and is a significant historical and cultural city in southern Germany. Ulm boasts a rich history dating back to the 9th century. It was granted city privileges in the 12th century and thrived as a prominent Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire from the 14th to the 16th centuries, driven by a prosperous textile industry and trade. The city's most iconic landmark is the Ulm Minster (Ulmer Münster). Founded in the 14th century, it features a 161.5-meter spire, making it the tallest church steeple in the world. The Fishermen's Quarter in the Old Town preserves its medieval charm, where half-timbered houses, stone bridges, and canals beautifully complement one another, creating Ulm's most enchanting neighborhood. The City Hall, built in the 14th century, features an exterior adorned with exquisite frescoes and an astronomical clock, standing as a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Ulm is also famously known as the birthplace of the renowned scientist Albert Einstein.

Finally escaping the hustle and bustle of Munich, I leisurely strolled through Ulm, a suburb of Bavaria, and completely fell in love with this relaxed southern German countryside lifestyle. Wandering aimlessly along the wheat field paths, the clear blue sky was dotted with wispy white clouds, and on both sides stretched fields of nearly ripe golden wheat, carrying the faint fragrance of grain in the breeze. Our group walked along the trails deeper into the town, without a checklist or a plan, simply enjoying the summer afternoon sun—it was so comfortable. Climbing to the viewpoint halfway up the hill, we could overlook the entire town of Ulm. Red-roofed houses were nestled among the trees, the vast fields stretched out before us, and the trees framed the distant town. Every snapshot was a picture-perfect, heartwarming European pastoral scene. Along the way, we stumbled upon whimsical art sculptures, their bold and vibrant colors adding a touch of whimsy to the otherwise ordinary country lanes. The old town retains its retro red-brick buildings, the thick brick walls exuding the texture of time. It's secluded and quiet, almost devoid of tourists; every alleyway you wander into is full of surprises. In the evening, I found a local's favorite open-air German restaurant and ordered pan-fried fish with roasted vegetables. The fish was tender and juicy, paired with a refreshing fruity sparkling wine. A gentle evening breeze created a wonderful atmosphere. I also received a very tender hand-drawn German card, the gist of which was: You are a brand new beginning, possessing the greatest magic in the world, forever enveloped in boundless love. The simple words touched me deeply in this foreign land. I prefer Ulm's unhurried tranquility to popular tourist destinations. No need to rush through crowds; simply idly passing the time in the open countryside of southern Germany is the best kind of travel.

Who would have thought that Ulm, a little-known town in southern Germany, would be so incredibly romantic, offering stunning scenery and completely avoiding the crowds! Ulm's most famous feature is its fishermen's huts along the Danube River. Colorful half-timbered houses line the waterway, their burgundy, pale yellow, and light blue pointed roofs reflected in the turquoise water. Stone bridges, flowing water, and flowers blooming on windowsills create a picturesque scene, every snapshot a fairytale come to life. Even the breeze seems to slow down as you stroll along the riverbank; the atmosphere is simply divine. The old town's streets are paved with cobblestones, and at the end of narrow alleys stand ancient stone towers. Wandering among the varied heights of the old buildings feels like stepping into a medieval picture book. The Old Town Hall's entire exterior is covered in vintage colorful frescoes, its astronomical clock is exquisitely intricate, and its Gothic carved windows are adorned with floral sills, exuding an artistic and cultural charm. Ulm Minster is a must-see landmark. Its soaring Gothic spires pierce the sky, and its intricate flying buttresses and stone carvings are breathtaking. Standing in the square and looking up, the grand architecture evokes a sense of awe. After a long day of sightseeing, be sure to try the local specialty, pork knuckle. The skin is roasted until crispy and juicy, paired with soft potato dumplings and sauerkraut—the meat is incredibly flavorful, and a hearty bite brings pure bliss. The town has a relaxed pace, free from the hustle and bustle of big cities. You can experience both the rich history of its buildings and the gentle charm of its water towns. Compared to Munich and Neuschwanstein Castle, Ulm is much less crowded, offering a quieter, more photogenic environment. You can leisurely explore the main attractions in half a day, making it perfect for those who enjoy slow travel and dislike crowds. If you're driving through southern Germany, don't miss this hidden gem—it's both therapeutic and incredibly photogenic!

Ulm Minster (Ulmer Münster), located in Ulm, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, is a magnificent Gothic church belonging to the Lutheran Protestant denomination. Initiated by local citizens in 1377, it was originally a Catholic church but converted to Lutheranism in the 16th century. After several interruptions, it was finally completed in 1890. Its main spire reaches a height of 161.53 meters, with 768 steps, making it the tallest church in the world (as of 2025), surpassing Cologne Cathedral. The interior features exquisite stained glass windows, a 15th-century oak choir, and organ concerts, often attracting visitors to climb the tower for panoramic views of the Danube River and the city. It symbolizes the ambition and perseverance of Ulm's citizens.

The city center is dominated by the huge Gothic Ulm Minster, a centuries-old church. The Town Hall has an early-Renaissance facade, murals and a 16th-century astronomical clock. Half-timbered houses line the narrow alleys of the Fischerviertel, an area close to the River Danube. Ulm Federal Fortifications are the largest preserved fortifications. It's worth to visit the university's botanical garden. The city is perfect for a day trip. #citycenter #botanicalgarden #church #travel #hellonewyear
