Most people visiting Tianmen Mountain stop after Heaven’s Gate or the main viewpoints. But if you keep going ALL the way to the right side of the summit area… through the cliff paths, glass walkways, misty bridges and mountain trails… …you eventually reach one of the most surreal places we saw in Zhangjiajie: 🏮 Tianmen Temple (天门山寺) A hidden Buddhist temple above the clouds. And honestly, not many tourists make it all the way there — which is such a shame. And somehow, at the very end of April, there was STILL cherry blossom blooming there 🌸 Honestly, the combination felt unreal: 🌫 thick fog 🌸 soft pink sakura ⛰ dramatic cliffs 🏮 temple roofs disappearing into clouds 🌧 light mountain rain Everything looked like a fantasy movie set. And weirdly enough? The terrible weather actually MADE the photos. Nothing looked too polished or “Instagram-perfect.” Instead everything turned mystical, cinematic and almost dreamlike. Some of my favorite China photos from the entire trip came from this exact spot. BUT — important survival warning 😭 IT WAS FREEZING. Not just “a little chilly.” Actual cold mountain wind cutting through wet clothes while walking through fog for hours. So if you plan to explore the temple area properly: ☔ ABSOLUTELY bring a raincoat ❌ DO NOT bring umbrellas Seriously. The wind on the mountain destroys them. I’m not exaggerating when I say every trash bin along the route was full of broken umbrellas that clearly lost the battle with Tianmen Mountain 😂 A few more useful tips: 🌸 late April / early May can still have cherry blossoms here 🌫 fog changes the atmosphere completely — don’t fear bad weather too much 🥾 the walk is longer than people expect 📸 misty weather creates INCREDIBLE photos here 🧥 bring layers — summit temperatures feel much colder than in Zhangjiajie city Honestly, this became one of those accidental travel moments that stays with you forever. Xuzhou must be so crowded you can't even walk, right? Neighboring Suzhou, Anhui, is just a 30-minute high-speed train ride away. Huangzangyu and Mangdangshan have fewer crowds and offer free admission [doge] 📍Huangzangyu National Forest Park Liu Bang, chased by Qin soldiers, hid here to escape, and the area was later renamed Huangzangyu. The 3,500-year-old King Qingtan tree has a trunk so thick that several people can't wrap their arms around it. Ruiyun Temple's thousand-year-old ginkgo tree turns golden in autumn. Huangzang Cave, a palm-sized natural stone cave, offers a truly authentic feeling of hiding away in the wilderness. The Sword-Drawing Spring and Horse-Digging Spring are said to have been dug by Liu Bang and his warhorse when they were thirsty, and water still flows from them today. Admission is CNY 60 during peak season and CNY 40 during off-peak season. The mountain is much cooler than the city, truly a natural oxygen bar. 📍Mangdang Mountain This is where Liu Bang started his uprising by slaying a white snake, marking the beginning of the Han Dynasty. The 39.9-meter-tall bronze statue of Liu Bang on the main peak is the tallest historical figure statue in Asia; you'll have to crane your neck to see it all. The Snake-Slaying Stele features an interactive light show, where you can see special effects of the white snake and Liu Bang at night. From the top of the Grand Han Heroic Scenery area, you can overlook the vast eastern Henan plain, offering expansive views. Mangdang Mountain is in Yongcheng, Henan, not far from Huangzangyu, so you can visit both. 🗓️2-day itinerary Day 1: Take the high-speed train to Suzhou East, then head to Huangzangyu. Hike and breathe in the fresh air, see the King Qingtan tree, Huangzang Cave, and Sword-Drawing Spring. Stay overnight in Suzhou city. Day 2: Go to Mangdang Mountain in the morning (about a 40-minute drive). The mountainous terrain creates a unique microclimate, making it feel cooler in the mountains than in the city during midsummer. Historical background: This place was formerly known as Huangsangyu. Legend has it that Emperor Gaozu of Han, Liu Bang, once hid here to escape capture. A one-day trip can be done for just over 200 yuan. · ----- 🌿 Four hidden gems, ranked by me 1️⃣ Huangcangyu National Forest Park — “the only primeval forest in northern Anhui” This was Liu Bang’s refuge, recorded in the Book of Han, not made up. The forest is full of green sandalwood and ancient cypress trees. It’s noticeably cooler than the city in summer and rightly called a natural oxygen bar. I entered through the north gate: Jiudao Gate → wooden plank road → Ruiyun Temple → Huangcang Cave → Bajian Spring, about 3 hours without detours. The cave is small, but standing at its entrance looking down into the valley really gives you the feel of the birthplace of the Han dynasty. 2️⃣ Caiwa Huaihai Campaign General Front Committee Site — a surprisingly photogenic red village Located in Caiwa Village, Dingli Town, it’s a 4A scenic spot and a nationally protected cultural site. The core is the late Qing Dynasty blue brick courtyard at Yangjiatai. The only full group photo of the Fifth Front Committee was taken here. Free entry with ID. I thought it would just be a quick visit, but the old houses, youth park, and reed marshes are all very photogenic. Especially around 4 PM when the slanting light hits the gray brick walls, it feels like shooting on film. 3️⃣ Shengquan Temple — locals’ mountain behind the city, not commercialized Inside Fengshan Forest Park, rated 4.8 on Trip.com, free admission. Behind the temple is a thousand-year-old holy spring. Many locals come early morning with buckets to collect water. A short hike further up leads to a summit viewing platform overlooking the entire Xiaoxian county seat. The half hour at sunset is truly magical. 4️⃣ Daihu Park — don’t miss it, looks better at night than during the day This lake in Fengcheng New District was formed from a coal mining subsidence area. It features Longchen Tower, the Seventeen-Arch Bridge, and a music fountain. When the lights come on at night, it has a bit of a “Little Jiangnan” vibe. Walking around the lake takes 20 minutes. Don’t get lured by the touts at the mountain gate. Walk further in and find a farmhouse with mostly local license plates. · Xiaoxian mutton soup: white mountain goat slow-cooked, milky broth, eaten with water chestnut flatbread soaked in the soup. People queue even in the hottest weather. · Xiaoxian rolled noodles: chewier than cold noodles, topped with sesame paste, chili oil, garlic water, and gluten. The handmade stalls in the market and old street taste better than storefronts, 5–8 yuan per serving. · Sa soup + water chestnut flatbread: the soul of northern Anhui breakfast, wheat kernel chicken soup with egg, paired with freshly baked crispy flatbread, 6–8 yuan fills you up. ⚠️ Tips: The “30 yuan direct shuttle” at Huangcangyu entrance often only goes to the town entrance; Caiwa is closed on Mondays; most small old town eateries close before 8 PM, so don’t eat dinner too late. Places like Xiaoxian are not for ticking off checklists. Take it slow over two days. With mountains, temples, red villages, and mutton soup all covered, you’ll truly get to know this small city
