Back from Fushun: 3 days there completely changed my perspective on spending
I always thought Northeast Chinese cities were best visited in winter, until I went to Fushun in September and discovered that autumn there is a completely different experience✨
No crowds, no high travel costs. Just slow strolls, mountain views, local food, and a genuine sense of everyday life.
If you enjoy budget-friendly travel and are looking for a comfortable, relaxed small city, Fushun is definitely worth a 3-day, 2-night trip💛
🍁 Trip highlights
The biggest takeaway from Fushun for me was the "relaxed vibe."
It has history, natural scenery, and that unique Northeast hospitality.
If it's your first time in Fushun, I highly recommend experiencing the crisp autumn mountain views. In September, the weather starts to cool down, the leaves begin to change color, and there's a faint scent of autumn in the air🌲
Hetu Ala City is a must-visit. The ancient architecture retains a strong Manchu cultural character, and walking through it feels like traveling back in time. Standing on the city walls, feeling the breeze, and watching the sunset is truly healing.
Sarhu Scenic Area is also perfect for unwinding. The lake and mountain views, combined with autumn colors, make for great photos without even trying📸. Just sitting there for a while, letting your mind wander, is incredibly therapeutic.
There's also the Lei Feng Memorial Hall. If you enjoy urban cultural travel, it's worth a visit. Fushun isn't just a tourist city; it's a city with stories and heart.
🚶 3-day, 2-night budget itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Fushun → Lei Feng Memorial Hall → Slow city stroll → Night market food
After arriving in Fushun in the morning, you can drop your bags at your hotel.
In the afternoon, visit the Lei Feng Memorial Hall to experience the city's culture—no need to spend too much time here, just take your time to understand the city's spirit.
In the evening, dive straight into the food scene at the local night market and soak up the vibrant Northeast nightlife🔥
I recommend taking a walk on the street after dinner instead of heading straight back to your accommodation; you'll discover many scenes of local life.
Day 2: Hetu Ala City → Sarhu Scenic Area → Return to the city
Start early in the morning for Hetu Ala City; it's a much better experience when there are fewer people.
I suggest taking your time here to look at the architecture and take photos—wearing light-colored clothing makes for great pictures📷
In the afternoon, head to Sarhu Scenic Area; the lake is especially beautiful when the weather is nice.
Find a spot with a good view and sit for a while, watching the clouds move slowly—this is the little happiness that belongs to September☁️
Return to the city in the evening to continue exploring local snacks.
Day 3: City stroll → Local food → Departure
No need to pack the last day too full.
You can sleep in, grab a hot breakfast at a street-side shop, and buy some local specialties to take home.
Slowing down on the last day of a trip makes it easier to hold onto the memories.
🌿 My healing moments
On this trip to Fushun, what I liked most wasn't any specific attraction, but those unremarkable little moments.
Walking on the street in the morning and seeing the steam rising from breakfast shops🥣;
Sitting by the lake in the evening and watching the sun slowly set🌅;
Listening to people chat in the local Northeast accent in the crowd—I suddenly felt that the meaning of travel is to briefly escape your familiar life.
Sometimes you don't have to go to popular cities; smaller, less crowded places are often more relaxing.
🏠 Accommodation recommendations
If your budget is limited, I suggest choosing a location in the city center with convenient transportation.
No need to look for luxury hotels; clean and comfortable guesthouses or budget accommodations are perfectly fine.
I personally prefer small, cozy guesthouses that feel like home. Opening the window in the morning and seeing the city slowly wake up feels much more like a real trip than just sleeping in a hotel.
🍜 Foodie must-eats
You really can't miss the local Northeast specialties when you come to Fushun!
① Fushun Mala Ban 🌶️
You have to try it! It's a bit different from regular Malatang—it's sour, spicy, and appetizing, with a rich variety of ingredients.
It might taste strange the first time, but it gets addictive. It costs about 15–30 CNY per person, which is great value.
② Lamb soup 🥣
Drinking a bowl of hot lamb soup in the Northeast autumn is just so comforting.
The soup is fresh and rich, and paired with a sesame flatbread or side dishes, it's a very satisfying meal. It costs about 20–40 CNY per person.
③ Northeast BBQ 🍢
You must have a BBQ night!
Skewers, grilled chicken racks, grilled bread slices, paired with a drink—this is the right way to spend a night in the Northeast.
④ Sauerkraut pork pot 🥘
A must-try Northeast specialty. The sauerkraut cuts the grease, and the pork slices are fragrant but not greasy. It's perfect for a group, costing about 40–70 CNY per person.
🌤️ September weather & what to wear
September in Fushun already has a distinct autumn feel🍂
The daytime temperature is quite comfortable, suitable for long sleeves and light jackets.
The temperature difference between morning and evening is significant, especially if you go to mountainous or lakeside areas, so be sure to bring a jacket.
Recommended outfits:
✨ Daytime: Sweatshirts, long sleeves, light shirts
✨ Evening: Jackets, trench coats, knit cardigans
For photos, autumn colors are very photogenic—beige, brown, and white clothing all look great📸
💡 September travel tips for Fushun
1️⃣ Avoid pitfalls
Don't spend all your time at tourist attractions; Fushun is better suited for slow travel.
Often, street-side shops, park strolls, and local markets are more interesting than checking off tourist spots.
2️⃣ Transportation
Taxis are convenient and affordable within the city.
If you're going to surrounding scenic areas, I suggest planning your route in advance, as public transportation in some places isn't as frequent as in the city center.
3️⃣ Pre-trip checklist
Must-haves:
✅ Light jacket
✅ Comfortable sneakers
✅ Power bank
✅ Sun protection
Especially if you're going to outdoor scenic areas, a comfortable pair of shoes is really important, otherwise, your feet will be exhausted after a day of walking😂
4️⃣ Budget travel tips
If you want to save money, try to avoid the weekend peak.
Book your accommodation in advance and choose small shops frequented by locals for meals; the prices are usually more affordable, and the taste is often more authentic.
💛 Final thoughts
Fushun isn't the kind of city that stuns you at first glance, but it's the kind of place you grow to love the longer you stay.
The September breeze is just right, the scenery is just right, and the prices are very friendly.
If you're looking for a small city to travel to without having to rush your itinerary or spend a lot of money, you should really add Fushun to your list🍂
Sometimes the most comfortable travel is just finding a quiet place, eating well, taking good walks, and enjoying a few days of slow living✨
