The temple was founded in 860 AD by the Tendai sect monk Jikaku Daishi Ennin and has a history of over 1,100 years. The most distinctive feature of Yamadera is that the entire mountain is the temple. From the mountain gate to the summit Okunoin, you need to climb 1,015 stone steps. A popular saying in Japan goes: with each step climbed, one worry is lifted, so the climb itself is a form of spiritual practice. From the top, you can overlook the Yamagata Basin and the surrounding mountains. The existing buildings were mainly rebuilt during the Meiji era. The entrance is about a 10-minute walk from Yamagata Station, and you'll need to climb 1015 stone steps to reach the temple. Along the way, you'll see numerous stone tablets and pagodas of various sizes. The tree-lined path stretches all the way to the summit, featuring many uniquely shaped rocks and rest areas along the way. Enjoying the scenery makes the hike surprisingly easy! The mountain temple has always been a tourist attraction I wanted to visit, and it lived up to my expectations. It is well worth the climb. I would like to come again in winter if I have the chance to experience a different style.

This trip was to watch an ice show, so we stayed in downtown Sendai. If you don’t have a JR pass, you can only search for nearby attractions. Mountain Temple, I have seen him in his green and lush state~ I wonder if he is still magnificent under the white snow. Take the train to Yamagata and watch the snow getting thicker and thicker I know the mountain temple is getting closer and closer to me~ I met a warm-hearted fellow countryman on the road and shared the moment when the tram passed by.
