The Acropolis of Athens

The Acropolis of Athens is the most striking and complete ancient Greek monumental complex still existing in our times. It is located on a rocky outcrop above the city of Athens and contains the remains of several ancient buildings of great architectural and historical significance, the most famous being the Parthenon. It is on a flattish-topped rock that rises 150 m (490 ft) above sea level with a surface area of about 3 ha (7.4 acres). Over the centuries, the Acropolis was many things: a home to kings, a citadel, a mythical home of the gods, a religious center and a very popular tourist attraction. It has withstood bombardment, massive earthquakes and vandalism yet still stands as a reminder of the rich history of Greece. It was amazing being there in person seeing one of the oldest ancient monuments in Greek history!
