Nanjing Museum

Nanjing Museum is located at No. 321, Zhongshan East Road, Xuanwu District, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province. It is one of the three major museums in China, also known as Nanjing Museum or Nanbo. Its predecessor was the National Central Museum founded by Cai Yuanpei and others in the 22nd year of the Republic of China (1933). It is the earliest museum in China and the first large-scale comprehensive museum built by national investment. It is now a large-scale comprehensive national museum, the first batch of national first-class museums, the first batch of national museums jointly built by the central and local governments, a national AAAA tourist attraction, a national key cultural relics protection unit and a 20th century architectural heritage of China. Nanjing Museum covers an area of more than 130,000 square meters, with a 'one museum, six galleries' layout, namely the History Museum, Special Exhibition Museum, Digital Museum, Art Museum, Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, and Republic of China Museum. In addition, the museum has 'six' research departments, namely the Archaeological Research Institute, Cultural Relics Protection Research Institute, Ancient Architecture Research Institute, Exhibition Art Research Institute, Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Research Institute, and Ancient Art Research Institute. It also has the only ethnology and folklore research institution in Chinese museums. Among them, the Cultural Relics Protection Research Institute is known as the 'Cultural Relics Triple-A Hospital', which is a key research base of the National Cultural Relics Bureau for the protection of paper cultural relics. As of 2018, Nanjing Museum has a total of 432,768 pieces (sets) of various collections, including 371,032 pieces (sets) of precious cultural relics. The number of precious cultural relics ranks second in China, second only to the Palace Museum. The museum's collections range from the Old Stone Age to the present; they are both national and regional; they include both court heirlooms and archaeological excavations, as well as a part of them collected and donated by the society, all of which are treasures and excellent works of all dynasties and generations, and treasures that have attracted much attention from the academic circles at home and abroad. The museum has all kinds of cultural relics, such as bronze, jade, ceramics, gold and silver utensils, bamboo, wood, ivory, lacquerware, silk embroidery, calligraphy and painting, seals, stele carvings and statues. Each type forms its own historical series, which is the most direct witness to the development of Chinese civilization over thousands of years.
