It was built by Master Baiguang in the 15th year of Shunzhi in the Qing Dynasty (1658 AD). It covers an area of 153 acres, with more than 200 halls and over 7,000 volumes of various Buddhist scriptures. Guiyuan Zen Temple belongs to one of the five families and seven sects of Buddhism, the Cao Dong sect, hence the name Guiyuan Zen Temple. Guiyuan Zen Temple is also known as "Hanshi Yijing", which is due to its towering ancient trees and lush flowers and trees. It is also the location of the Wuhan Buddhist Association.
