Southern Silk Road, Northern Tibet New Loop
There's a route connecting G219 Xinjiang-Tibet Highway + G317 Ngari Grand Northern Route + G216 Qiangtang Uninhabited Area Highway. It passes through Shiquanhe, the capital of Ngari; through Rutog's clear waters and rock paintings, via Gegye's tranquil waters, and through Gerze's lake clusters, unfolding a continuous scroll of breathtaking scenery along the way!
Along the "Southern Silk Road, Northern Tibet New Loop," take your time to admire the breathtaking landscapes of the Ngari section, and discover wilderness and freedom~.
Rutog County: Pangong Tso (Lake) boasts the highest-altitude bird island. In spring and summer, tens of thousands of gulls gather on the island, their wings beating like soft drumbeats as they take flight. The lake water is crystal clear, allowing you to see rocks and swimming fish beneath the surface. Driving along the lakeshore, the water's color changes richly from mint green to deep cobalt blue, depending on the angle and light! Rock paintings are living history. Rutog is the county in Tibet with the largest number and densest distribution of rock paintings. The Rimdong Rock Paintings along G219 vividly depict scenes of animal predation, human hunting, and other aspects of life. Upon closer inspection, the rock surfaces are carved with patterns of yaks, antelopes, suns, and moons. The lines are simple yet vivid, serving as a "diary on stone" left by Ngari's ancient inhabitants! The Rutog Dzong Ruins stand majestically on a towering mountain. Legend has it that it was once the garrison of General Xianba, King Gesar's great general. Though now in ruins, its former grandeur is still discernible. Surrounded by vast highland pastures, cattle and sheep roam freely under the blue sky and white clouds, presenting a quintessential plateau landscape.
Gar County: Shiquanhe Town is the administrative hub of Ngari and a warm "sky post" in the hearts of countless travelers. The Shiquan River flows through the town, where G219 and G317 intersect. Travelers rest, resupply, and enjoy the leisurely pace of plateau life here. Step into Jiamu Tamarix Wetland Park, and your eyes will immediately be drawn to the vast expanse of tamarisks. Every June, the blooming tamarisk flowers are a beautiful sight across the Ngari landscape. In autumn, the tamarisk branches turn a warm orange-red, spreading like flames. The tamarisks and the reflections of distant mountains merge in the water, resembling a natural watercolor painting. The wetland is rich with aquatic plants, and water birds occasionally emerge from the reeds, creating long, slender ripples on the water's surface. A must-visit treasure museum in Ngari is the Ngari Museum. Entering the museum is like stepping into the mysterious realms of the Zhangzhung Kingdom and the Guge Kingdom, instantly enveloped by a profound sense of history. Quietly engage with history as you move between the various exhibition halls. Recharge your energy in Shiquanhe Town, then continue exploring the mysteries with a wealth of historical knowledge.
Gegye County: Influenced by the unique geology and climate of the plateau, numerous salt lakes of varying sizes are scattered throughout Gegye. Due to different mineral contents, the lake surfaces display layers of gradient colors such as blue, green, and white. Thick natural salt crystals accumulate along the shores, shimmering with tiny silver glints under the plateau sunlight.
Gerze County: Located in the heart of Qiangtang, Gerze is home to numerous lakes. If Gerze's lakes are a symphony, then Wuma Tso, situated along G317, is one of its most brilliant movements. Its most stunning feature is a natural sandbar in the middle that divides the lake into two, with the two halves exhibiting distinctly different water colors. It is therefore considered by self-driving travelers to be "one of the most beautiful lakes on the Ngari Grand Northern Route"! The Advance Detachment to Tibet Memorial Hall is located along G216 and is currently the highest-altitude red memorial hall in the world. Step into this memorial hall, with its 888 square meters of exhibition space and over 200 physical artifacts, and let the use of sound, light, and electricity transport you back to that glorious era. Here, you will feel the faith that the pioneers upheld with their lives and receive a red baptism, giving this journey a profound spiritual foundation. The Gerze to Minfeng section of G216 is the Qiangtang version of "one lake after another." After passing Kahu Tso, Yema Tan, and Kunchuk Tso, heading north for nearly a hundred kilometers, G216 passes the eastern shores of Aru Tso and Meima Tso. In this "multi-lake zone," many pairs of interconnected sister lakes are distributed. The scenery of lakes and mountains is breathtakingly beautiful.
Measure mountains and rivers with wheels, explore the earth with your feet; the "Southern Silk Road, Northern Tibet New Loop," from geological wonders to cultural feasts, awaits your arrival!
