Zhenyuan Ancient Town | A serene, remote, beautiful, and tranquil ancient town away from the hustle and bustle
Long ago, I heard about an ancient town in Guizhou, which was called Qingyuan Ancient Town at the time. As it belongs to Zhenyuan County, people now are accustomed to calling it Zhenyuan Ancient Town. It has a history of over 2300 years and is known as the 'Venice of the East.' It is said to be a sacred place for breakups; if you love someone, you must bring them here at least once. It is also a place to appreciate love. The S-shaped Wuyang River runs through the ancient town, creating the spectacular Tai Chi pattern of 'nine mountains embracing a river, the river dividing two cities.' The ancient town is connected by the Wuyang River system; it is characterized by canyon peaks, cloudscapes, and water hues; and it is known for being majestic, strange, beautiful, and secluded.

Zhenyuan Ancient Town | Worth a day and a night
There are thousands of ancient towns today, but Zhenyuan is definitely worth the visit.
Zhenyuan Ancient Town is a government city, a Han city, it may not have the exotic charm of the neighboring Miao villages, but its own layout and the ancient relics that remain are worthwhile.
The river was muddy due to the torrential rain the day before, so I only saw the blue sky, almost clear water. However, the night view was completely absent, you must stay overnight in the ancient town, the later the night, the more beautiful it becomes.
Zhenyuan is an ancient town in everyday life. The main roads are all commercial, just take some distant shots. Only by sneaking into the small alleys can you see the real old houses.
If you are here for the attractions, you need to enter the scenic area before 4:30 pm.
I arrived late and didn't see the ancient city walls. Although many people write that it's not interesting to rank so high to see stones, but these are relics from the Ming Dynasty, aren't relics a form of cross-temporal communication? Standing on the ancient path from 600 years ago is the most direct contact with history...
Transportation in Zhenyuan is convenient, there is a bus from the train station that goes directly to the ancient town, it is an ancient town in everyday life. Personally, I still recommend daytime attractions, and staying overnight in the ancient town.

Guizhou's stunning self-driving route, where scenery and culture coexist, and some attractions are even the world's best
Guizhou is a province rich in tourism resources, not only with beautiful and spectacular natural scenery such as Huangguoshu Waterfall, Fanjing Mountain, Libo's Seven Holes, Xingyi Wanfenglin, etc., but also with colorful cultural landscapes such as Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, Yelang Valley, Zhaoxing Dong Village, Zhenyuan Ancient City, etc.
Our self-driving route to Guizhou this time perfectly integrates scenery and culture, both leisurely and out of the picture, and there are many special delicacies, which is very suitable for traveling in this season.
The self-driving route is: Zhenyuan Ancient City——Shibing Yuntaishan——Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village——Zhaoxing Dong Village, let's take a look at these places where scenery and culture coexist.
Zhenyuan Ancient City
Zhenyuan Ancient City is located in Zhenyuan County, Qiandongnan Prefecture, Guizhou Province. The county has a history of more than 2000 years. It can be said that the scenery is beautiful and the history is long. The winding Wuyang River runs through the city, and the houses on both sides of the river are antique, beautiful like a painting.
The name "Zhenyuan" originated from the Song Dynasty. This place has been the location of Tao and Fu for more than 700 years. There are still many cultural relics and ancient buildings, such as Qinglong Cave, Tianhou Palace, Zhongyuan Zen Temple, and many ancient houses and ancient lanes.
Among them, Qinglong Cave is the most special. It is built on a cliff halfway up the mountain, overlooking the Wuyang River. It can be said that it is a great place for geomantic omen. Standing on the opposite bank and looking far away, it looks a bit like the Hanging Temple in Shanxi.
Its architecture is also very special. It is a combination of Central Plains architecture and Miao and Dong stilt buildings. It has a history of more than 600 years.
When you come to Zhenyuan Ancient City, in addition to visiting ancient buildings, walking along the river is also a very poetic way of traveling. The willows on both sides of the river are drooping, and when the lights are on, the water reflects rows of lanterns, which makes people feel like a dream.
At this time, find an open-air table by the river, order a special tofu grilled fish from Zhenyuan, drink the rice wine brewed by the locals, listen to the songs of the wandering singers, and feel like traveling through time, comfortable and cozy.
PS: Zhenyuan Ancient City is a national 5A scenic spot, free of charge, very suitable for staying for two or three days, and slowly playing.
Shibing Yuntaishan
When it comes to Yuntaishan, many people's first impression will think of Henan's Yuntaishan, but in fact, Shibing County in Guizhou also has a Yuntaishan, which is a World Natural Heritage, and the scenery is very similar to Zhangjiajie in Hunan, both of which are karst landforms.
However, unlike ordinary mountains, Shibing Yuntaishan is relatively easy to climb. The regular hiking route only takes two hours to go back and forth, and most people can finish it relatively easily.
The trees along the way are shaded, and even the big sun does not shine. Although the scenery is not stunning, it is very durable. The highest point of the regular route is Yindou Pavilion. Looking down from above, you can see all the small mountains. The viewing platform is surrounded by cliffs and cliffs, which is breathtaking. There are stone pillar peaks surrounded by the distance, rising from the ground with different shapes. If there is a sunrise and sea of clouds, the scenery will be very beautiful.
PS: If you want to see the sunrise and sea of clouds in Yuntaishan, it is recommended to stay in a homestay at the foot of the mountain for one night.
Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village
This is the largest Miao gathering place in the world, where thousands of households live. The houses are built on the mountain and stacked on top of each other. After the lights are turned on at sunset, the mountain is full of thousands of lights, which is known as the "real version of Spirited Away".
When you come to Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village, it is recommended to stay in a guesthouse on the hillside. Sitting on the balcony and drinking tea, you can watch the stilted buildings stacked on the opposite side, with a very wide view.
In the early morning, walk along the river from the No. 6 Wind and Rain Bridge to the No. 1 Wind and Rain Bridge. The sunlight passes through the gaps in the leaves and falls on the river surface, sparkling like broken silver, shining with dazzling light. At this time, whether it is taking pictures of the scenery or portraits, it comes with a beauty effect.
At noon, find a coffee shop with a wide view to drink tea, drink coffee, read books, leisurely and cozy.
In the afternoon, find a travel photography studio to take a set of beautiful Miao costume travel photos, so that this trip will not leave regrets. After makeup, put on Miao clothes, put on silver ornaments, walk on the stone road lined with stilted buildings, and feel like a Miao girl.
At sunset, go to the viewing platform to watch the night view, and watch the thousands of lights slowly light up below, you will feel as if you have walked into the movie "Spirited Away".
For dinner, come to the food street for a special sour soup fish from Kaili. The sour and spicy taste makes people want to eat more.
PS: Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village is very large, suitable for staying for a few days, leisurely strolling, and slowly savoring.
Zhaoxing Dong Village
Zhaoxing Dong Village is known as the "First Village in Dongxiang". It is one of the largest Dong villages in the country, with more than 1,000 households living in it. It is surrounded by mountains on all sides, and two streams pass through the village. The terraces outside the village are layered, the scenery is beautiful, and it has been selected by "China National Geographic" as one of the "Six Most Beautiful Ancient Villages in China".
If you want to experience the customs of ethnic minorities in Guizhou, Zhaoxing Dong Village is a good choice. Unlike the commercialization of many ancient cities and towns in China, this place is still relatively primitive. Most of the people living here are local Dong people. Old people wearing Dong costumes can be seen everywhere in the streets and alleys, and people often see people blowing reeds under the drum tower.
This time to Zhaoxing Dong Village, I also encountered a full moon wine, followed the gift money and sat with the locals. Before each drink, I will sing a few toasts, which is very interesting.
The enthusiastic brothers and sisters enthusiastically introduced the local special dishes on the table. The most impressive one is red meat. It is said to be boiled pork mixed with fresh pig's blood, plus various spices, mixed and stirred, and then sprinkled with a layer of folded ear root that people in Yunnan, Guizhou and Sichuan like to eat. Although the method sounds a bit scary, the taste is actually not bad.
If you come to Zhaoxing Dong Village, there is no need to rush to the attractions. Walk along the river, turn into the alley, the dyeing tubs of batik, the glutinous rice drying, the old people sunbathing, the women carrying firewood, the aunts washing clothes and the ancient stilted buildings are all a long-lasting picture.
PS: Zhaoxing Dong Village is one of the sub-venues of the 2018 CCTV Spring Festival Gala. The five drum towers here have been recorded in the Guinness World Records and are very distinctive.
If you also like places that integrate scenery and culture, you might as well follow my route to take a look.
The Cozy Ancient Town - Zhenyuan Ancient Town
Visiting Guizhou, if you miss this ancient town, you will definitely regret it!
1️⃣ Accommodation: Due to the off-season, the prices are beautiful. We stayed in a riverside inn located inside the ancient town. It was the most expensive one with the most beautiful scenery, yet the price was unbeatably beautiful! The rooms in the inn were also exceptionally clean.
2️⃣ Cuisine: When we arrived, it was noon and both of us were famished. We went to a rice noodle shop fifty meters away from the inn and each ordered a bowl of rice noodles with an extra braised egg. It was delicious, affordable, sour, and spicy; for the next two days, we checked in at different small shops, Yuan's Tofu Old Shop, He Lao Wu's Mutton Noodles, Miaoling Tofu Grilled Fish, etc., all delicious and affordable, and all must-visit places; the milk tea was also so cheap it was almost like having no friends, Happy Sweet Potato two cups of bubble milk tea cost the price of one usually, Mixue Bingcheng coconut milk tea was also cheap and very authentic!
3️⃣ Scenery: The ancient town is built along the street; the inn's balcony faces the riverside, where the morning crowing and chirping of birds make any casual photo beautiful; the streets are filled with local residents, and taking a leisurely stroll in the morning and evening makes you feel like a local; the lights along the street at night reflecting off the glittering river surface and the willow trees about to sprout green buds are irresistible; there is a bar by the river, the owner is also the lead singer, singing folk songs one after another, which perfectly matches the tranquility of this ancient town. The beauty and coziness of the scenery really need to be appreciated in person, and you definitely won't regret it!
If you want to take photos in Miao ethnic clothing, this is definitely the best choice in Guizhou, hundreds of times better than Qianhu Miao Village, and much more affordable!
Lonely Planet was right, there are such beautiful places in China!
🕰 Ten years have passed, and this place still retains its original charm.
👨🌾 This is a traditional Chinese village that is only filled with the atmosphere of daily life.

Zhenyuan Ancient Town and the Qianhu Miao Village in Zunyi
My long-anticipated Guizhou trip has finally come true🎉!
Guizhou's cuisine is truly unforgettable😍. The Zunyi lamb rice noodles were not as stunning as I imagined🤔, but the crispy rice crust wrapped in sticky rice cake is absolutely my top favorite (regret not buying more😭).
The red sour soup is really incomparable😜, it's a blessing for those who love sour flavors😄!
I did visit the Miao village, which was very comfortable and relaxing😌, but there were also a lot of people; by comparison, I prefer the tranquility of Zhenyuan Ancient Town🤫.
Zhenyuan Ancient Town, the 'Oriental Venice' on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau
Zhenyuan Ancient Town has a history of over 2000 years and is a national 5A tourist attraction. Nestled against the mountains and beside the water, it is located on both banks of the Wuyang River and is known as the 'Oriental Venice'.
The most impressive aspect is the scattered white walls and black tiles along the banks, with big red lanterns hanging high under the eaves! Although it is somewhat commercialized, one can still feel the strong sense of life and vitality! The bustling crowds in the ancient streets and alleys, the full seats in restaurants and teahouses, the prosperity of the ancient town from a thousand years ago, the peaceful times - it seems as if it has been revived in this parallel space-time!

Explore Zhenyuan, appreciate the charm of a millennium-old town
📸🛶 Explore Zhenyuan, appreciate the charm of a millennium-old town.
In the southwest of Guizhou, there is an ancient town like a dazzling pearl, exuding enchanting charm, which is Zhenyuan Ancient Town.
🌃 It has a long history and rich cultural heritage. The ancient streets, simple architecture, and traditional handicrafts... all display the unique charm of the old town. Walking on the stone-paved roads of Zhenyuan, it's as if you've traveled back to ancient times, feeling the tranquility and simplicity.
🎨 The natural scenery of Zhenyuan is equally intoxicating. The Wuyang River flows through the city, with clear waters that you can see to the bottom, surrounded by green mountains on both sides, like a beautiful painting. Taking a boat ride on the river, swaying on the water, admiring the beautiful scenery along the coast, feeling the pleasant breeze on your face, it's like being in a fairyland.
🍜 Of course, the local cuisine of Zhenyuan is also not to be missed. There are various special snacks, such as sour soup fish, Zhenyuan grilled fish, intestine and tripe noodles, each bite satisfying your taste buds immensely.
🤗 Come on, dear friends, let's enter Zhenyuan Ancient Town together, appreciate the unique charm of this thousand-year-old town, and embark on an unforgettable journey!
The itinerary for the next holiday is already arranged—Guizhou
Transportation: Self-driving
Route: Zhenyuan Ancient Town - Feiyun Cliff Ancient Architectural Complex - Langde Upper Village - Dali Dong Village - Basha Miao Village - Jiabang Rice Terraces - Libo Seven Small Arches - Maolan Virgin Forest
Guizhou hardly has an off-season for tourism, but because there are so many attractions, it's still possible to find some less crowded routes.
However, even with many people, some popular places are still worth visiting. During the Spring Festival, I went to these places and there weren't many people, so I had a lot of fun.
Zhenyuan Ancient Town is quite commercialized, but the 'twists and turns' and 'crooked paths' of Sifang Street are worth exploring, and it's also good for taking photos.
Near Zhenyuan Ancient Town, Qinglong Cave (admission fee) and 'Peace Village' (free) are worth a visit.
Feiyun Cliff Ancient Architectural Complex (free) is an unexpected little surprise. On the road, it is still a national cultural heritage site. Not many people go there. It's beautiful. There's a small museum. When I turned around, I thought if I could have such a big house, I would be happier.
Langde Upper Village is a Miao village (admission fee), with a low degree of commercialization, not many visitors, and retains local life characteristics and performances, which are interesting and not as crowded as thousands of households.
Dali Dong Village (free) is also a less commercialized place, and the group buildings look beautiful from a high vantage point.
Jiabang Rice Terraces (free) are vast and stunning, but February is not the best time to see them; they are beautiful from March to July.
The size of Seven Small Arches (admission fee) is a crowded attraction, but it's a must-see. There are many waterfalls, and the water is green and blue, which is very beautiful, reminiscent of Jiuzhaigou. If you want fewer people, catch the first wave into the scenic area at 8 am.
Libo Forest Park requires some hiking gear, mainly to see the karst landscape, which is quite tiring to walk, so you can choose according to your physical strength.
The feeling that Qiandongnan gives me is that it's like Zhang Yimou on a rainy day, and Hayao Miyazaki on a sunny day, very much worth visiting again and again.
The vibrant Zhenyuan ancient town
After coming out of the Tongren Fanjing Mountain, heading towards Qianhu, you will pass through Zhenyuan ancient town. This small mountain town in southeastern Guizhou has so many 'unexpected' features.
Blue-grey tiles, small bridges over flowing water, the Wuyang River runs through the town. The cliffside architecture is a living fossil, and the alleys of the Guizhou Ancient Architecture Museum hide the only Fu Family Mansion that has not been renovated. This town is a true reflection of the people's lives, with no homestay street, no snack street, but markets, vendors, and old men fishing along the river. Zhenyuan ancient city itself does not charge an entrance fee, but some individual attractions inside sell separate tickets, with the old prefectural city on the north bank and the old garrison city on the south bank.
Walking through the alleys of the ancient town is like traveling back to ancient times, where you can feel the tranquility and the sediment of the years. Here, you can experience the breath of life and cultural heritage, as well as beautiful scenery, making it an underestimated ancient town.
enyuan Ancient Town: A city's landscape so beautiful it captivates the world, and a millennium of ink charm that perfumes Zhenyuan
Zhenyuan Ancient Town, located in Zhenyuan County of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture in Guizhou Province, is a treasure land that blends natural scenery with cultural history. The river here meanders in an 'S' shape through the town, with the old government city on the north bank and the old garrison city on the south bank. Both cities were built during the Ming Dynasty, and parts of the city walls and gates still exist. There are many ancient buildings, traditional residences, and historical docks inside and outside the city. The history here can be traced back to the 30th year of King Zhao of Qin (277 BC), and the county has a history of over 2280 years, serving as the location for the Dao and government offices for more than 700 years during the Yuan and Qing dynasties.
Upon arriving in Zhenyuan, one feels the tranquility, a stark contrast to the bustling Xijiang Miao Village. The ancient streets and alleys are winding and secluded, with ancient residences, streets, alleys, and docks, all featuring blue bricks and black tiles, almost in their original state.
The stone slab-paved lanes have a sense of age, and wandering through the various ancient alleys (such as Sifangjing Alley, Fuxing Alley, and Renshou Alley) gives a sense of time travel, as if stepping from the bustling modern world into those distant, ancient historical years~~
The Wuyang River, known as the 'Oriental Venice,' flows through the city, dividing Zhenyuan into two parts, so many homestays are located along the river. Opening the balcony door, one can see the turquoise Wuyang River. With rocking chairs and tea tables on the balcony, sitting back, feeling the breeze, sipping tea, and enjoying the riverside scenery is simply wonderful~
Food recommendations: Tofu pudding grilled fish, chicken shredded tofu pudding noodles, fried glutinous rice cakes, fried jiao cakes, sour soup fish, and other delicious and inexpensive local snack

This "zero negative reviews" AAAAA town in Guizhou is less crowded and free!
Zhenyuan Ancient Town, wow, this place is really charming! It is located in Zhenyuan County, Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture, Guizhou Province. The river there is like an elegant "S" shaped ribbon, gently passing through the city. Do you know, the north bank is the old mansion city, and the south bank is the old guard city. These two cities were built in the Ming Dynasty, and you can still see some city walls and city gates. Walking in Zhenyuan Ancient Town, you are like traveling through time and space, returning to that ancient era.
The history of Zhenyuan Ancient Town is long, it started to set up counties in the 30th year of King Zhao of Qin (277 BC), and it has a history of more than 2280 years. Moreover, during the Yuan and Qing Dynasties, it was the location of the road and the prefecture for a full 700 years!
On January 7, 2020, Zhenyuan Ancient Town was also rated as a national AAAAA tourist attraction by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism! There are various ancient buildings, traditional houses and historical wharfs, and the number is super large. Do you know, Zhenyuan Ancient Town is also the settlement of two important ethnic groups in history, "Wuxi Man" and "Baiyue People".
The scenery of Zhenyuan Ancient Town is also super beautiful. It is located on the slope from the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau to the Xiangxi Hills, mainly dominated by karst landforms. The climate here is also particularly pleasant, belonging to the Central Asian tropical monsoon temperate climate zone, with an average annual temperature of 16.4°C.
If you come to Zhenyuan Ancient Town, don't miss the one hall, two temples, two courtyards, four bridges, four caves, six passes, six officials, eight temples, eight shrines, eight pavilions, nine halls, nine temples, and those with great ornamental and scientific research value. The ancient residences, ancient alleys, ancient wharfs and other cultural relics and historical sites, there are more than 160 in total!
How about it, after listening to my introduction, can't wait to go to Zhenyuan Ancient Town? Haha, let's go, let's feel that ancient and beautiful style together!
Zhenyuan Ancient Town, crossing the day boundary of the border town
Unlike the hustle and bustle of the Miao Village, Zhenyuan is a quiet ancient town of the Miao nationality. The centuries-old bricks and stones, the memories of the Qin and Han dynasties, quietly drift in the Wuyang River. Zhenyuan is not big, the whole county town is built along the river, and the Shanghai-Kunming railway passes through the city. Take a slow walk here, watch the big red lanterns under the black tiles sway in the wind, watch the wooden rafts lightly touch the calm water of the Wuyang River, and walk past the day boundary of the border town like this.
How to get there:
Zhenyuan Railway Station has trains to Guiyang, Huaihua, Zhuzhou and other places. In addition, there are direct buses to the scenic area connecting Xijiang Qianhu Miao Village and Fanjing Mountain, which can be purchased on the Ctrip app bus 'Tourist Line'. We set off from Miao Village at 14:30 and arrived in two hours.
The ancient town of Zhenyuan, which hasn't seen snow in 800 years, has turned into an ink painting
Oh my God
I actually encountered snow in Zhenyuan Ancient Town, what kind of divine luck is this
In front of Shiping Mountain and by the Wuyang River
A true portrayal of majestic mountains and beautiful waters
The Wuyang River is in an 'S' shape
This '㵲' character was specifically created
For the river in this ancient town
A warm and low-key 2200-year-old ancient town, it is also the eastern gateway of Guizhou.
Here there are nine mountains embracing one water's twists and turns, and also a boundary of one water dividing two cities
There are the crooked paths of the Fu Family Courtyard
And there is the ancient vicissitudes of the Zhusheng Bridge, a key route in the southwest
...
Snow in the south is different from the north, first it freezes, then it starts to snow, why go to Harbin, the little Maotai and little Zhe'er roots in Guizhou are more fragrant watching the snow in their hometown.
The ancient city after the snow really became a beautiful ink landscape painting, like a masterpiece under the master's pen.
The snow in the ancient city has basically melted, the roads are all water, it's still necessary to dress warmly when coming over, the daytime temperature is only one or two degrees.
I must recommend a delicious food in the ancient city, called Miao Bo Ma Sour Soup
Where to stay? Because parking in the ancient city is not convenient, if you drive, try to find a hotel with a parking lot, otherwise you will have to pay for public parking, about 40-50 yuan a day.
Must-see attractions:
Fu Family Mansion
Zhenyuan Museum
Shiping Mountain
Qinglong Cave
Wanshou Palace
Compared to Wuzhen, I prefer this permanently free ancient town
Compared to Wuzhen, I prefer this permanently free ancient town‼️
Rowing boats, red lanterns, stone bridges, misty rain...
Everyone probably has an ancient town sentiment in their heart
If I could only choose one ancient town
I recommend Zhenyuan Ancient Town
It's not so commercialized, you can still see the simple folk customs, this is probably what the world's fireworks should be like

Five Stuffing Buns (for breakfast)
Yuan's Tofu Brain (old shop) Xinglong Pedestrian Street in Fuxing Lane, opposite Fu's Mansion, it is recommended to go during the day, it is not easy to find at night.
🏨Accommodation suggestion: Be sure to find a homestay with a river view by the river. If you are driving, it is best to find a homestay with a parking lot. I stayed at Leyehu Pan Homestay, which is located in the center of the ancient town. The large floor-to-ceiling window river view room is really good!!
