Lake Wanaka in Autumn
#fallishere
Lake Wanaka in Autumn is spectacular.
Wānaka is a beautiful destination in New Zealand's South Island. To fully enjoy it, simply bring a sandwich and sit on the grass by the lake – it's a serene way to appreciate life.
“That Wanaka Tree” is a viral tree 😂 The tree itself is quite busy even in autumn so be prepared to wait for a photo. There are no charges but also no seating near the tree.
The landscape surrounding it seems to make it even more special.
Wanaka is beautiful as an overall.
Half-Day Kayak Tour on Lake Wanaka
The team at Paddle Wanaka are easy to deal with and can cater to your needs whether it be a guided tour or you simply want to do your own thing.
We highly recommend doing The Tiki Tour if you’re keen to do a guided tour and learn about the area.
Depending on the wind direction, you will either paddle from the lakeshore and at the end be picked up by boat, or travel out to your start point by boat and paddle back to the lakeshore. The safety briefing before you set off is very thorough and you’re in safe hands.
Our guide Austin was really knowledgeable and we enjoyed the stories he told us about Bull Island and Ruby Island, he shared several Maori legends with us as well. The information about Lake Wanaka and other lakes and rivers in the region was also interesting.
We had an afternoon tea stop on Ruby Island before heading back to the lakeshore.
The Tiki Tour is definitely worth doing.
Thanks Austin and Chris for a great afternoon on the lake.

This picturesque tree that lives in the wanaka lake in New Zealand is always worth taking a picture of!
Relative to the prosperity of Queenstown, I prefer Wanaka's peace and quiet.
It is hidden between Lake Wanaka and Lake Hawea and the Southern Alps. It is a dream town like a paradise.
Walking in the windy and sunny days, strolling along the pebble beach, listening to the lake's sloppy, deciduous sand, even doing nothing, looking at the lonely tree in a daze, is a pleasant thing.
Wanaka is the place I have been most obsessed with, because in addition to completely letting go of my own self, listening to the voice of my heart, I also understand that doing nothing can be so justified, people can not help but be drunk in time.

Fall Colours by the Lake
Visit Lake Wanaka during autumn for an immersive fall experience! The vibrant autumn colours are stunning to say the least. Look for the lonely tree, an icon of this gem. No matter where you look, the scenery is gorgeous. Plan this in your itinerary when visiting New Zealand! #passionpassport
The Wanaka tree is a bit of a legend on Instagram, even having its own hashtag #thatwanakatree.
In 2023, I am living the dream lifestyle in the Southern Hemisphere
For the first time, I drove abroad
In faraway New Zealand, I spent 10 days
crossing the entire South Island
"The beauty of the scenery is not at the destination, but on the way."
This once again convinced me beyond doubt: snow-capped mountains, Lake Tekapo, herds of cattle and sheep, the azure ocean
These super healing landscapes healed my spiritual exhaustion
·
🚗 Driving insights:
1. The driving direction is opposite to that in my home country, and it took me about 2 hours to get used to it
2. The drivers here are very polite; if you want to overtake, they readily give way
3. The speed limit on highways is between 100-110, everyone is very casual, safety first
4. If you rent a car, be sure to purchase full insurance
·
📍 Route sharing:
Christchurch—Aoraki/Mt Cook—Lake Tekapo—Wanaka—Queenstown—Glenorchy—Dunedin—Christchurch
·
📸 Off-the-beaten-path spots:
🌟Peters Lookout
A viewing platform where locals drive to, at the end of the road is the majestic snow-capped mountains, taking a photo with the mountains is very impressive
🌟Lake Tekapo: Lake Tekapo
Here, you can see the dazzling starry sky with the naked eye or a phone; there is also the very famous Church of the Good Shepherd; and the endless, milky blue Lake Tekapo;
🌟 Wanaka: Wānaka
A rare view: a lone tree standing in Lake Wanaka, overlooking the distant Southern Alps
🌟 Dunedin: Dunedin
One of the oldest cities in New Zealand, with a very industrial-style train station, full of historical charm
In 2023, I visited many cities and several countries
I experienced different customs and gained a more comprehensive understanding of myself
Each journey is more like a conversation with myself
The healing landscapes I saw during my travels made me feel joyful
The works I shared also delighted everyone
I think, this is the meaning of travel

Wanaka, located between Queenstown and Te Anau/Tekapo, is a place you absolutely cannot miss on New Zealand's South Island. However, without firsthand experience, it's hard to grasp how long one should stay, and you might easily miss out on the beautiful scenery. Let me explain it to you clearly✌️
——
🎈What to do❓
❶ Lake Wanaka
▫️ The Lone Tree - no amount of photos compares to experiencing it in person. Trust me, you have to walk under the tree and have your family take pictures from a distance. It's so romantic🌳
▫️ Feeding seagulls - there are many seagulls by the lake that are not afraid of people. Just prepare some bread🍞
▫️ Take a walk along the lake - the beauty here is part of everyday life. Enjoy the tranquil moments🚶
❷ Aspiring National Park and Roy's Peak Track
▫️ Blue Pools Track: The whole journey is 1.5 km, with an approximate playtime of 1 hour
▫️ Rob Roy Glacier Track: The whole journey is 10 km, with an approximate playtime of 4 hours
➌ Skiing
From June to October each year, Wanaka is a tourist destination for ski enthusiasts. The largest ski field on the South Island is Treble Cone, and Cardrona Alpine Resort is open all year round, offering skiing in winter as well⛷️
➍ Puzzling World
A cute colorful house maze world. See if you can find your way out. The playtime is about 1 hour🌈
➎ Wanaka Lavender Farm
Open all year round. From September to May each year, the farm turns into a purple paradise. It's close to the maze world, so you can visit both places🦙
——
🎈Where to stay❓
Recommended: Lake Side Apartments. The rooms are spacious, and it's a 5-10 minute walk to the Lone Tree. The apartments come with a swimming pool, and there's a children's playground across the street🎠
——
🎈What to eat❓
❶ Francesca's Italian Kitchen Wanaka - Italian food, pizza🍕 fries🍟 pasta🍝. It's very popular and requires a reservation in advance. Being late might result in cancellation.
❷ Patagonia Chocolates - local New Zealand ice cream🍦
