Tongli, formerly known as Futu, changed its name to “Tongli” in the early Tang dynasty due to its luxuriousness. 15 rivers divides the town into 7 small islands, arranged like the Chinese character “川”, and connected by 49 ancient bridges, making these islands an integrated area. Ren Lansheng, master of the garden, was once an officer. This convention has been passed down for over 1,000 years and means, "going over these three bridge floors sequentially on foot." The people of Tongli regard ternate bridges as a symbol of good luck , and believe they dispel calamity and difficulties.
