Reviews: From Auckland: Waitomo Glowworm and Ruakuri Caves Day Tour

Both caves were cool for their uniqueness, but the Waitomo Caves were remarkable for the dazzling display along the indoor boat ride! The Mauri community preserves this site very well and makes it special. Our driver Marty was a definite impediment though. His accent was so heavy, most of us on the bus struggled to understand what he was saying! His driving was frightening at times. I am not sure he's a good fit for accomodating tourists as he isn't terribly friendly or hospitable as he was insistent on only going to places that would serve him a free meal or drink as a tour guide. This activity may be better if booked with a different agency in all honesty.

If you want me to rate these trips - don’t dismiss and downplay my experience like you did on my last recap. Kori (guide at the caves) was exceptional. He was funny and wise and gave us much instruction in advance to avoid any complications in the dark and entering and exiting the boat. The driver that took us to the caves (Dean?) drove recklessly. The weather was off and on raining and the roads winding. Heavy braking and taking turns like he’s on rails. Forget speed limits. He didn’t use a mic to project and in the back we couldn’t hear the few words he said. He admittedly told us at the onset that he was a man of few words. He was likable and I enjoyed meeting him and hearing his stories at lunch and lunch was amazing. One of the best I’ve had on this trip. Skip the kiwi house - not worth the stop. Barely saw anything due to the nocturnal nature of the inhabitants. I would recommend the caves 100% - worth it. Was relieved when the 2.7 hour drive back was over and I arrived at hotel
