Guoqing Temple was first built in the 18th year of the Sui Dynasty's Kaihuang era (598 AD) by Prince Yang Guang of Jin, fulfilling the last wish of Tiantai Sect founder Master Zhiyi. After over three years of construction, it was initially named Tiantai Temple. In the first year of the Sui Daye era (605 AD), when Emperor Yang Guang ascended the throne, he renamed it "Guoqing Temple" based on the phrase "If the temple is completed, the country will be purified."
