Gala Dalí Castle was originally an 11th-century building. It was later purchased by surrealist master Salvador Dalí and became the castle for him and his wife. At that time, the structure was dilapidated from years of neglect—its ceiling had collapsed and the garden was in ruins. But through Dalí's restoration efforts, the castle regained its vitality. He ingeniously incorporated the damaged walls and ceilings to create a space brimming with creativity. In 1982, this place became Dalí's studio, where he and his wife were also laid to rest. By 1996, it opened to visitors. The castle's interior features exquisite decor with vibrant colors and Baroque-style embellishments, housing numerous antiques indoors and large sculptures in the garden. Unlike Dalí's other creations, this castle was actually inhabited by Dalí and his wife, as the artist devoted more attention to this particular structure. The master painter Salvador Dalí founded the world-famous Dalí Museum in his hometown of Figueres in 1974, which is one of the most visited museums in Spain and a destination for art lovers around the world. It houses more than 4,000 works by Dalí (1904-1989), including his early artistic experiments and works, as well as his surrealist works in later years. In addition to paintings, the museum also exhibits sculptures, jewelry, and furniture designed by Dalí. The predecessor of the museum was the ancient theatre of Figueres, which was destroyed by war. The museum was designed by Dali himself, and every detail was scrutinized several times. It was finally opened to the public on September 28, 1974. The building itself is a very imaginative work. Artwork, the transparent mesh dome has become the landmark of Figueres, and the giant eggs standing or falling on the roof of the museum are also very conspicuous. The use of eggs to represent life and change is a frequent image in Dali's works. There are also dolls, bagels and other works of art scattered outside the museum, revealing a strange and mysterious atmosphere. Dali himself called the museum a "surreal world". Walking into it, the decoration of the atrium will make people's eyes shine. The small windows are arranged in a semi-arc shape, like the boxes in the theater. There are countless works of Dalí at various stages of creation in the pavilion, not to be missed: Port Alguer, The Girl from Figueres, The Spectre of Sex Appeal, The Spectre of Sex Appeal, SoftSelf-Portrait with Fried Bacon, Galarina, Basket of Bread, Atomic Leda, Apotheosis of the Dollar, Morning, Noon, afternoon and evening" (Dawn, Noon, Afternoon and Evening) and so on. In addition, the Mae West room is also not to be missed. This magical exhibition hall is modeled after the American actress Mae West. The lip-shaped sofa in the room, the oil paintings similar to binoculars, and the curtains shaped like hair make up the room. The vivid face of the actress and the unique design concept have given infinite inspiration to future home designers. The classic "face" shape can be photographed in the small building behind the curtain. Dalí's Jewellery Gallery was established in 2001 and includes 37 sets of gold jewellery, 2 sets of jewellery that are new, and 27 drawings and paintings on paper that Dalí created while designing his jewellery. I came to Dali’s museum in 2011 and had to come again with my mom. We took a train from Barcelona to come and see his museum again. Same as I remember, but way busy. A bit sad as he is my favourite artist and so with a lot of people around and pushing to get through the exhibitions, I wasn’t able to stop and enjoy his art again. Saw some new pieces which was nice and you get to see the jewellery exhibition near the end, after the gift shop. It’s nice to see in the jewelry exibition that some of the pieces are in other parts of the world on display and will be back in due time. My mom and I went near the end of July and it was very busy, hope another month is less busy. 🤗
