Izu Peninsula

Izu Peninsula is a peninsula formed by volcanic activity. Two of the world's rare volcanic arcs converge here, creating a diverse landscape interwoven with hot springs, volcanic rock coasts, and mountain valleys. The peninsula is surrounded by the sea on three sides, offering a rich variety of scenery, from rugged coastlines to the dense forests and deep valleys of the Amagi Mountains. Hot springs are Izu's signature attraction. Shuzenji Onsen is said to have been established over 1,000 years ago and is a historic hot spring town on the peninsula. The hot spring street is built along the Katsura River, featuring the serene and deep Bamboo Forest Path, with Tokko-no-yu resting quietly in between. Atami and Ito on the east coast offer a different vacation atmosphere, where hotels stand by the sea, allowing you to enjoy ocean views while soaking in the hot springs. Traces of volcanic activity can be found all over the peninsula. Jogasaki Coast is a volcanic rock coast formed after lava from the eruption of Mt. Omuro approx. 4,000 years ago flowed into the sea, cooled, and was eroded by waves over many years. It spans approx. 9 km, and the Kadowaki Suspension Bridge hangs over the cliffs. Mt. Omuro itself is a perfectly round volcanic cone, and you can see a panoramic view of Izu from the summit. Dogashima on the west coast is famous for its sea caves; when you take a boat into Tensodo Cave, light pours down from the gap in the ceiling onto the water, creating a blue glow. Seafood is also a major feature of Izu. Being surrounded by the sea on three sides makes the local seafood exceptionally fresh. Splendid alfonsino is a representative local fish species, commonly found in hot spring hotels and coastal restaurants.Izu City · 19 km from Izunokuni

Shuzenji Town is located in the central part of Onon on the Izu Peninsula, surrounded by hills surrounded by Amagi, Chaoyun and Dharma Mountains. Shuzenji Spring is a large hot spring that stretches along the Katsura River and is one of the leading hot springs in Naka-Izu. The atmosphere is very harmonious with the surrounding environment, and it has been loved by many scholars, artists and writers since ancient times. The Buddha Cone Hot Spring is said to be named after the 8th century monk Kobo Daishi tapped the rock with a Buddhist cone, and the hot spring water gushed out of the rock. The Buddha Cone Hot Spring is located in the center of the hot spring street and can be visited freely. In Shuzenji, a famous temple built by Kobo Daishi in the early 9th century, there is a legend that it was the deep courtyard of Shuzenji Temple where Kobo Daishi practiced when he was young.Izu City · 6.1 km from Izunokuni

Mt. Omuro is located in the Izu Highlands and was formed by volcanic eruptions. Its perfectly round, symmetrical silhouette makes it a recognizable local landmark, often described as looking like an overturned bowl. At the center of the summit is a bowl-shaped crater with a circular trail along the rim. The interior of the crater is a gentle grassy slope that has long featured an archery range, and a Sengen Shrine is built on the east side. To protect the mountain's vegetation, visitors must take a chairlift to the summit. The summit offers expansive views. On clear days, you can see Mount Fuji, the Hakone mountains, the Amagi mountain range, and the Izu Islands in the sea, making it a great spot to overlook the surrounding scenery. Due to the long-standing tradition of burning the mountain to clear weeds, the slopes are free of trees and covered only by neat grass. The unique natural landscape and expansive views offer visitors a unique high-altitude sightseeing and walking experience.Ito · 20.5 km from Izunokuni

I really like the scenery, quietness and hot springs of the Izu Peninsula, and of course the restaurants with pure Japanese menus. Although it is a bit embarrassing, it is super exciting; I look forward to visiting in three weeks.

The cactus zoo at the foot of Mount Omuro is incredibly soothing. Over a thousand different cacti of varying shapes and sizes grow in the greenhouse, creating a spectacular sight. Most of the animals roam freely, and the most endearing are the Kapibala, who relax in the hot springs with a gentle and docile demeanor. You can even hand-feed the red pandas and alpacas. This unique blend of flora and fauna is gentle and healing, making it an unforgettable and tender memory of your trip to Izu.

Mishima Taisha Shrine is a must-visit in Shizuoka. When I visited, the main halls were under renovation. There were quite a few pigeons, and some cherry blossoms were in bloom, including weeping cherry trees. I also saw some golden osmanthus. According to the information, Mishima Taisha Shrine is the first shrine in Izu Province, with a history of over 1300 years. When Yorimoto was exiled to Izu, he prayed here for the revival of the Minamoto clan, and after succeeding, he greatly expanded the shrine.

It’s really nice to come to Mount Omuro when the weather is nice. It takes just a few minutes to reach the top of the mountain by cable car, and you can see endless scenery as far as the eye can see. If you have time, you can also go to the shrine or go to the archery range at the bottom of the valley. There are souvenir shops at the bottom of the mountain and Shizuoka Prefecture’s famous Wasabi ice cream.

Price is about the same as buying over the counter, except that we didnt have to queue in line. It's basically a skywalk with a nice view of Mt Fuji. Skywalk seems new. There were also ziplines right beside the skywalk that kids were playing (requires additional cost to play). Across the bridge, there were some food stalls, restaurant and an animal petting store. Overall good for about 2hours.

Chose to visit the Mount Fuji Instagram-famous spots on Trip.com's recommendation, and I couldn't have asked for a more relaxing and enjoyable experience. The itinerary included memorable locations such as Arakurayama Sengen Park, Hikawa Clock Shop, Oshino Hakkai, Kawaguchiko Lawson, and Lake Kawaguchi Oishi Park—each offering its own breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji. Our tour guide (Hikari) truly made the trip special: not only was he friendly, but he was also impressively patient throughout the day, making sure everyone felt comfortable and had enough time to enjoy each spot. The pace of the tour was just right, allowing for leisurely sightseeing and ample opportunities for taking photos—perfect for capturing those Instagram-worthy moments! If you're considering this day trip, I recommend bringing your camera and a light jacket, as weather around Mt. Fuji can change. The service from Trip.com was smooth and easy, making the whole experience stress-free.

Lake Ashi is located in Hakone, a famous hot spring resort in Japan. The greenery of the cedar forest trail is super beautiful. Walking on the trail, you feel like you are in the forest. The water of Lake Ashi is clear, the lakeshore is beautiful, and the cruise ships are circling the lake. The Torii in the lake is one of the iconic buildings in Hakone, which makes people feel the tranquility and beauty of nature.
