Yala National Park

4.7/5
246 reviews
Yala National Park is located on the southeastern coast of Sri Lanka, covering an area of about 979 square kilometers. It is the largest national nature reserve in Sri Lanka, second only to Villepotu National Park. The park not only has a diverse ecological environment, but is also known for its numerous wildlife. Park History Designated as a protected area in 1900, it was designated a national park in 1938 along with Verapatu National Park. Yala National Park consists of five areas, only two of which are open to the public. One area is called Ruhuna National Park (Ruhuna National Park), also known as Sierra, is the main area to see leopards and elephants, where there are many tourists; another area is called Kumana National Park (Kumana National Park) , also known as East Yarra, is a prime area for bird watching. Biological resources There are wet monsoon forests, dry monsoon forests, semi-deciduous forests and tropical xerophytes, in addition to grasslands, beaches, rivers, lakes, swamps and wastelands. There are a large number of native Sri Lankan animals in the park. Groups of white-headed cranes inhabit the pond in the park. Crocodiles, peacocks and monkeys are all common animals in the park. Indian sloth bears, leopards, Asian elephants, buffaloes, wild boars, sika deer, etc. are also the objects of people's pursuit. In Yala, you can see almost all the wild animals in Sri Lanka. There are more than 30 kinds of mammals and 215 kinds of birds. Among them are the herds of wild elephants and the elusive cheetah. March-April is a good time to visit Yala National Park towards the end of the dry season, when the water level in the park is low and many animals come out to drink and forage. In the rainy season, the animals will be scattered to various places. Highlights 1 Sri Lankan Leopard Sri Lankan leopard is undoubtedly the biggest attraction. Seeing the leopard is the luck of visiting Yala. The leopard in Sri Lanka is said to be slightly different from the leopard in mainland India and is a unique breed of this region. A good time to observe leopards is from January to July each year. In Sri Lanka's safari parks, a large number of leopards can be observed. Large rocks and hills in the garden are common places for leopards to perch on branches near rocks. Aspect 2 Elephant The Runugam National Park near Yala is like an elephant passage, connecting Yala and Udawalawe National Park. Elephants migrate here from May to August. Aspect 3 Birds The birds here are very rich, from the raptor eagle to the cute little waterfowl, the hoary crane, the red river, the heron, the purple heron, the night heron and so on. They can be found in ponds and bushes in the garden. Peacocks flying with open screens and black-tailed jungle fowls, the national bird of Sri Lanka, are often seen on the roadside. Aspect 4 In the reptile zoo, there are huge crocodiles basking in the sun everywhere in the swamps and reservoirs, as well as lizards, small chameleons and poisonous snakes. Scenic tours - tour time General tourists' tours can be divided into three types: one is a half-day tour, starting from Tissa Hotel at 5:30, arriving at the park after an hour's drive, starting a half-day tour, and generally returning at 11:00-11:30 ; another evening tour around 15:00-18:30; and a full day tour from 5:30 to 18:30. Scenic tours - tourist vehicles can only take jeeps when entering Yala National Park. For safety reasons, you cannot get off the bus without authorization during the visit. Nearby Tissamaharama has many local tour companies offering safari trips. Most tourists book a chartered itinerary the day before, and the driver will lead the tour after entering the park. To avoid danger, they can only get off the bus in the specified area on the way. Although the road in the park is very difficult to walk, and the path through the dense forest is very bumpy, the fresh air and the eye-catching woods make you feel relaxed and happy. Tissa Maharama Lake is just outside the town, 1.5 km from the town centre. Although the lake is not big, the surrounding scenery is beautiful, and the trees around the lake are tall. In the evening, there will be a large number of egrets perched on it, which looks like a tree covered with white flowers from a distance. A wide lakeside trail has been built on the way around the south bank of the lakeside trail, where you can watch various birds and experience the good natural ecology of Sri Lanka. When the sun goes down, you can take a walk by the lake, and the scenery is also very pleasant. The south of the other reservoir is the B464 road, which leads to the religious holy place Katla Gam.Hambantota · 9.9 km from Kirinda

Bundala National Park, located 10 kilometers east of Hambantota, consists of waterways, ponds and sand dunes. The sand dunes glitter like gold in the evening sun, and the colorful birds use it as a paradise. Bird species here range from small bee-eaters to pincer-billed cranes. This wetland is also undoubtedly recognized by the International Convention on Wetlands, which shows its importance. There are more than 200 species of birds in this 62 square kilometers of land, many of which fly here from August to April from Siberia and Kuchlein, India for the winter, and from September to March. During the month there are many subsequent years to lay eggs and reproduce. There are more than 30 species of mammals and reptiles in the park, and large flamingos are happy to choose this place as their wintering place. The number of elephants in Bundala National Park is small, but they are often seen (depending on the season, the number of elephants is about 25-60). In addition to this, there are civet cats, giant squirrels and many crocodiles in the park. Between October and January, four of the five species of sea turtles in Sri Lanka (olive, green, leatherback, loggerhead) come ashore to lay their eggs, which is especially fun.Hambantota · 14.2 km from Kirinda

Sigiriya Lion Rock

Sigiriya Lion Rock is the site of a palace in the sky built atop a nearly 200m-high orange-red giant rock. In the 5th century, King Kashyapa I built the royal palace on the summit, and during his 18-year reign, he completed this complex that integrates a palace, gardens, and a fortress. It was later lost in the jungle for a long time until it was rediscovered in modern times, and today it is a representative monument in Sri Lanka's Cultural Golden Triangle. The entire site unfolds layer by layer from bottom to top. At the foot of the mountain are symmetrical water gardens surrounded by a moat. The ancient water system was ingeniously designed, and the fountains can still spout water by gravity during the rainy season. A pair of giant lion paws halfway up the mountain are the remains of the lion-shaped palace gate from that time. The brick lion body and head have long since collapsed and weathered, and now one can only imagine its former grandeur from the stone steps between the paws. Upon reaching the summit, the platform retains the ruins of the palace and reservoirs. Looking out from the height, the jungle and distant mountains are all in view.Sri Lanka · Sigiriya

The Great Stupa of Tissamaharama is located in the middle of the town center of Tissamaharama and Lake Tissamaharama. The pagoda is 55.8 meters high and 165 meters in circumference. It is said that there are a Buddha tooth relic and a forehead bone relic inside. According to legend, the park was built by King Kavantissa of Ruhunu about 200 years ago. The Ruhunu Kingdom is an ancient kingdom centered on Tissamaharama. It is considered to be the Buddha's tooth relic and the forehead bone relic, and the White Pagoda will be lit every night. The pagoda in the sunset is particularly beautiful, and flocks of birds are flying around, which is very visual. 1. The historical story On the side of the stupa is the statue of Queen Vihama Hadwi. Legend has it that Queen Vihama Hardwi's father threw his daughter into the sea as punishment for killing a monk by mistake. Vihama Hardwi narrowly escaped being rescued in Kirinde, 10km south of Tissa, and has since married Kavanitissa. Their son Dutugemunu was a Sinhalese hero who liberated Anuradhapura from Indian invaders in the 2nd century BC. 2. Near the stupa around the stupa are the much smaller Sandakirevi and Raseli stupa and the ruins of a meditation monastery said to date back two thousand years.Tissamaharama · 8.4 km from Kirinda

Fantastic visit and the highlight of our 1 day tour from Colombo. There is a water station halfway if you need to refill your bottle and on less busy days there is some limited shade at the top. Breathtaking views from the top.

The Tissamaharama Stupa is also a local landmark. The white stupa is particularly conspicuous under the blue sky and white clouds, and can be seen from a long distance. Like other temples, you need to take off your shoes before entering.

Kandy Lake, nestled in the heart of Kandy, Sri Lanka, is a serene and picturesque destination perfect for a leisurely stroll. Surrounded by lush greenery and historic sites, the lake offers breathtaking views, especially at sunrise and sunset. The peaceful atmosphere, diverse birdlife, and charming lakeside benches make it an ideal spot to relax. While the walk around the lake is pleasant, occasional traffic noise can be a minor drawback. Overall, it’s a must-visit for nature lovers.

We visited Minneriya hoping to see the famous elephant gatherings, but there were surprisingly few. The park’s terrain is mostly forested, with limited open plains for wildlife viewing. In contrast, Yala National Park offered a much richer experience with more wildlife sightings, including elephants.
