Ruins of Guge Kingdom are the remains of a kingdom capital built by descendants of the Tubo royal family on a loess hill along the Xiangquan River. Houses, caves, and pagodas cover the entire mountain, with city walls built on the perimeter and watchtowers at the four corners. The buildings and the mountain are both earth-yellow in color, grand in scale, and rigorously laid out. The summit houses the palace area, the mountainside houses the temple area, and the foot of the mountain contains cave dwellings. Walking up the mountain path, the Red Hall, White Hall, and Tara Hall on the mountainside are relatively well-preserved. The four walls inside the halls are covered with murals; the colors are rich yet remain vivid after hundreds of years. They feature images of Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and high monks, as well as scenes recording the royal lineage and social life of the time. There are also man-made secret passages carved into the mountainside, which can be climbed along the wall to reach the palace area at the summit. A relatively well-preserved building at the summit is said to have been the council hall. The murals inside are primarily themed on Tantric Buddhism, with a bold style and intense use of color. Below, scenes of suffering in hell are depicted, and the border features a long row of dakinis in various poses, no two alike, representing one of the masterpieces of the murals at the site. In the evening, the setting sun shines on the earth-yellow mountain, creating a desolate and profound play of light and shadow, a favorite moment for many photography enthusiasts.Zanda · 12.6 km from downtown

Shiquan River

Shiquan River, known in Tibetan as "Senge Zangbu," originates from a glacial lake north of Kangrinpoche, the main peak of the Gangdise Shan. It is the upper source of the Indus River and one of the major rivers in northwestern Tibet. Upon reaching Gar County, it enters a wide, open valley, where it converges with tributaries such as the Gar Zangbu and Langqu. It carves out a rare, moist oasis in the cold, arid desert of Ngari, and Shiquanhe Town is situated on this riverbank. Taking a walk in the evening, you can watch the sunset dye the water surface golden red. In the fall, the trees along the banks turn yellow early, and flocks of plateau waterbirds, such as ruddy shelducks and bar-headed geese, often rest on the river valley wetlands. The stretches of red willow thickets remain a signature sight along the river. Its basin lies deep in an arid, high-altitude region with little precipitation, so the water volume is not particularly abundant. However, it serves as a rare, stable water source in the heart of this plateau, nourishing the pastures and towns along its banks. Hot springs also emerge from rock fissures in the river valley, replenishing the river while raising the local water temperature, which keeps some sections from freezing even in winter.Gar County · 1.2 km from downtown

The Zada Clay Forest is a special geological landform formed by the influence of orogeny. The strata deposited at the bottom of the lake have been cut by flowing water for a long time and gradually weathered and eroded. The "trees" in the clay forest are scattered for dozens of meters in height and in various shapes. Driving through it is like circling around the feet of many giants. As a special landform combination, the Zada Clay Forest has rich and varied forms. On a macro level, the undulating, overlapping, steep and gentle clay forests are spread along both sides of the Xiangquan River. It is a rare "clay forest landform" wonder in the world. These peculiar "soil forest" landforms were formed by the lake basin sedimentary layer in the ancient times under the influence of the Himalayan orogeny, as the water level dropped, the lake basin rose, and the climate and river erosion cut. The steep and rugged rocks look like towering castles, towers, pagodas, etc., which are famous natural landscapes in Ali region. However, about 1,100 years ago, in the same afterglow, the palaces and temples of the once powerful Guge Kingdom stood. From the existing ruins, we can imagine the huge scene at that time, which is far from the current scene. Viewing point: The Xiangquan River Valley terrace a few hundred meters south of the county seat is a good place to view the earth forest. Photography point: On the square near Toling Monastery, a few dozen meters deep from the square is the broad and flat Xiangquan River network. The earth forests on both sides of the river valley are crisscrossed, resembling castles, pagodas, bodhisattvas, and palaces, stretching for dozens of kilometers.Zanda · 4.3 km from downtown

Laon Tso is juxtaposed with Manasarovar and is known as the "Ghost Lake". But its fame cannot be compared with the "holy lake" Manasarovar. The area of Laon Co is small, slightly lower than that of Manasarovar. In 1906, after measuring the water depth of Manasarovar, Swedish geographers tried to measure the depth of Laon Co, but only to measure the northern end of the lake to no avail. Its depth is still a mystery. Due to the climate change over the years, the water of Laangcuo Lake can no longer flow out and is closed into an inland lake. In the past 100 years, the amount of water supplied from Manasarovar through the Anja waterway has been intermittent, and the accumulated water area is much smaller than that of Manasarovar. The process of increasing chemical degree, but it is still a magnificent lake. There is still a river between the ghost lake and the holy lake. There is a small island in the ghost lake. It is said that there is a small temple on the island. Every winter, the lake is frozen and frozen, and the lama in the temple has contact with the outside world. Like the holy lake, the ghost lake is a paradise for birds.Purang · 43.8 km from downtown

Pilgrimage to Mount Kailash helped me find the answer. Only by letting go of your worries can you see what you need. Slow down and go slower, so that you can have more experiences and feelings in life, instead of having only one goal.

Shiquanhe is a literal translation of the Tibetan word "Sengge Zangbo". Several large mountain ranges converge here, with an altitude of 4,300 meters. It is the most lively and prosperous place in Ali region. There are taxis on the streets, and even long-lost traffic lights are on. Their appearance immediately shortens the distance between this desert town and the "civilized world".

Separated from Manasarovar by the road, it has a different, unique, and incomparable beauty. The snow-capped mountains beside it are guarding each other. The scenery is stunning, the fun is average, and the cost-effectiveness is super high. It's worth the trip.

A visit to Pangong Lake in Ali in September was an unforgettable encounter on the Xinjiang-Tibet Highway. At an altitude of over 4240 meters, the long, narrow lake stretches across the barren plains. Most remarkably, the eastern side is fresh while the western side is saline. In September, the lakeside grasslands were already turning yellow, lacking the lush green of summer, but exuding a vast and desolate beauty. The lake water's blue hues are ever-changing, crystal clear like a jewel on sunny days, and rippling with waves when the wind blows. You can take a boat trip to view Bird Island from afar; you can't land on the island, but flocks of brown-headed gulls circling the boat are a truly soothing sight. To be honest, the journey is long; driving from Shiquanhe takes quite a while. ⚠️ Make sure you have a border permit, specifying Rutog County, as it will be checked at checkpoints along the way. The winds at high altitudes are fierce, and the temperature difference between day and night is terrifying. It's scorching hot during the day and bitterly cold in the evening; don't be lazy with your thick coat. Avoid running and jumping; slow down, as it's easy to experience chest tightness and shortness of breath. The facilities are rather basic, there aren't many options by the lake, and supplies are scarce. Drones are prohibited, and regulations must be followed in the border area; do not take photos of military installations without permission. This is not a relaxing tourist spot; it comes after a long journey. But when the vast lake, distant mountains, and birds come into view, all the fatigue of the journey slowly fades away. With reverence, take all your trash with you and protect this pristine plateau. If you're taking the 219 Ali loop, Pangong Lake is worth a detour.

Yamdrok Lake is a turquoise blue, like a sapphire on the Shannan Plateau. Its body winds through the mountains like a coral branch. No matter which angle you look at it, you can't see the whole picture of Yamdrok. The sunlight at different times will show extremely rich layers of blue. The lake changes with the light, evolving into ever-changing blue, like a dream.
