Kunsthistorisches Museum

The Kunsthistorisches Museum was commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph specifically to house the art collections accumulated by the Habsburg dynasty over the centuries. Designed by architects Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer, it officially opened in 1891. The museum building itself is a work of art, with its Renaissance-style facade, towering octagonal dome, and marble-decorated interiors complementing one another; the grand staircase leading to the upper floor features murals painted by Klimt and others, and the hall beneath the dome is equally worth pausing to admire. The collection is mainly divided into the Picture Gallery, the Egyptian and Near Eastern Collection, the Collection of Greek and Roman Antiquities, the Coin Collection, and the Kunstkammer. The Picture Gallery is the highlight of the entire museum, with the paintings of Pieter Bruegel the Elder being particularly precious—the museum holds over ten of his oil paintings, including masterpieces such as "The Tower of Babel," "The Hunters in the Snow," and "The Peasant Wedding," a concentration of works rarely seen among museums worldwide. In addition, Raphael's "Madonna of the Meadow," Caravaggio's "The Crowning with Thorns," Vermeer's "The Art of Painting," Velázquez's portraits of the Spanish royal family, and Arcimboldo's "Four Seasons" series are all displayed here. The Kunstkammer houses the golden salt cellar crafted by Cellini, regarded as a representative masterpiece of Renaissance goldsmithing. The entire museum is worth spending the better part of a day savoring in detail, and ample time should be set aside especially for the Picture Gallery and the Bruegel room.

Goldener Saal

The Goldener Saal in Vienna is the main concert hall within the Vienna Musikverein building, officially opened in January 1870 and designed by Danish architect Theophil Hansen. The entire building adopts a neoclassical style, with its exterior modeled after an ancient Greek temple, while the interior of the hall is dominated by gold tones. The ceiling features a painting of Apollo and the nine Muses by August Eisenmenger, with the blue background and gold decorations complementing each other. The hall also contains sculptures by Franz Melnitzky and numerous caryatids. The acoustic design of the Goldener Saal has long been renowned. In an era when architectural acoustics had not yet formed a systematic theory, Hansen relied on intuition to design the hall with a "shoebox" proportion, combined with coffered ceiling panels, thick plaster walls, and a hollow resonance space beneath the stage, achieving a reverberation time of approx. two seconds, so that a balanced listening experience is obtained regardless of where one sits in the hall. This acoustic achievement has long made it recognized as one of the concert halls with outstanding sound quality. This is the permanent performance venue of the Vienna Philharmonic. The Vienna New Year's Concert, held annually on January 1, is broadcast worldwide via television, and the images of the golden hall together with the Strauss family waltzes have become a cultural symbol of the New Year. In addition to the New Year's Concert, the hall's year-round classical music season also brings together numerous international orchestras and conductors. The building also houses multiple performance spaces of varying sizes, such as the Brahms Hall, which can accommodate different types of performances including chamber music.

Vienna Music Society

The building of the Vienna Music Association is across the street from the Charles Church. This exquisite building is home to the world-famous Golden Hall. It is known as one of the "Five Concert Halls in the World". It is the perennial performance venue of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The Vienna New Year's Concert of the World takes place here. The building was built between 1867 and 1869 by the Danish designer Theophil Hansen. The overall style imitated the architectural style of the Greek temple. The facade is supported by three goddesses, which is classical and chic. Various concerts are held here throughout the year. Together with the Berlin Philharmonic Hall, the Leipzig Gewandhaus Concert Hall, the Amsterdam Concert Hall, and the Boston Symphony Hall, it is also known as the world's five largest concert halls. There are six main concert halls in the Musikverein Hall building, named Hall (Golden Hall), Brahms Hall, Glass Hall (Grand Auditorium), Metal Hall, Stone Hall (Horst Hasak Hall) and Wood Hall. Among them, the Golden Hall is the largest concert hall in the Music Association Building, which can accommodate 2,000 listeners at the same time. The Golden Hall is rectangular, resplendent and beautiful. The surrounding walls are supported by Greek-style goddess columns. The exquisite oil paintings on the ceiling depict pictures of Apollo, Muses and musical angels, Mozart, Brahms, Shi Busts of music masters such as Trauss can be found here. The acoustic effect of the golden hall is also ahead of the world. The architect hollowed out a space under the wooden floor of the high platform, and carefully calculated the division of the upstairs box and the arrangement of the goddess column on the wall, making the golden wooden floor and wall look like a violin. The sound of the band vibrates and swirls in the hall, and the reverberation curls, so that the audience in the hall can enjoy the same level of music performance regardless of whether they are sitting near or far. Other concert halls Brahms Hall, also known as "Small Hall", is mainly used for small music performances such as piano solo and chamber music. It can accommodate more than 600 audiences. There is a bust statue of Brahms at the entrance. It is decorated with red colonnade and golden ceiling, which is very gorgeous. The Glass Hall was one of four new concert halls, and was also used as a conference hall, movie screening room and dance floor. Schönbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace is a Baroque palace in Vienna and was once the summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty. The palace has over 1,400 rooms, and the state rooms and imperial apartments retain the original furnishings from the lives of royal family members such as Maria Theresa, Emperor Franz Joseph, and Princess Sisi. The palace notably features a Chinese lacquer room and a porcelain cabinet decorated in an East Asian style, with walls displaying porcelain and lacquerware from the East, reflecting the 18th-century European court's fondness for Oriental art. The garden behind the palace was planned and designed by a disciple of the French garden master Le Nôtre and is a classic example of a formal French garden. Neatly trimmed hedges line both sides of the grand parterre, among which stand dozens of large stone sculptures themed on figures from Greek and Roman mythology. The garden also features views such as the Neptune Fountain, a belvedere colonnade pavilion built at the top of the slope, and a maze reconstructed according to its historical layout. Within the palace grounds there is also a court carriage museum, displaying several royal carriages, including a gilded coronation carriage.

St. Stephen's Cathedral

"St. Stephen's Cathedral is located in Stephansplatz in the center of Vienna's old town. It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Vienna and one of the city's symbols. The church was first built in the 12th century as a Romanesque parish church. In the 14th century, under the leadership of Duke Rudolf IV, it underwent large-scale expansion and gradually took on the form of a Gothic cathedral. From the late 15th century, it became the cathedral of the Bishop of Vienna. A fire at the end of World War II destroyed the roof, which was later rebuilt after the war. Over the centuries, many weddings and funerals of the Habsburg dynasty were held here. Mozart was married in this church, and his funeral also took place here. Particularly striking is the church's colorful roof: hundreds of thousands of glazed tiles form diamond patterns, with the Habsburg double-headed eagle emblem embedded on the southern slope and the coats of arms of Vienna and Austria on the northern slope, shimmering brilliantly under the sunlight. The roof has an extremely steep pitch, allowing rainwater to wash it clean and preventing snow from accumulating. The Gothic main tower on the south side stands over 130 m tall and is affectionately called "Steffl" (Little Steffl) by the locals. It once housed the watchmen's quarters, where they kept watch for fires across the city and sounded the alarm bells. The north tower, halted due to construction difficulties, reaches only half the height of the main tower. Upon entering the church interior, the baroque high altar at the far end depicts the martyrdom of the patron saint Stephen; the Wiener Neustadt altar on the north side is a gothic double-winged altar, revealing gilded wood carvings of the Virgin Mary's life when opened on Sundays, with Emperor Frederick III's "A.E.I.O.U." motto still visible on its base. The stone pulpit in the central courtyard features reliefs of the four doctors of the church, adorned with carvings of a toad and lizard biting each other on its handrail, while a self-portrait of the sculptor peeking from a window hides beneath the pulpit steps; the crucifix playfully nicknamed "Jesus with a toothache" by Viennese locals is also worth pausing to admire. The catacombs house remains of over ten thousand individuals, including victims relocated after plagues and the sarcophagi/copper urns of dozens of Habsburg family members; beside the apostle choir stalls, Frederick III's red marble sarcophagus carved with over two hundred figures is regarded as a masterpiece of medieval stone sculpture. If your physical condition allows, you can climb the observation deck via the over 300 spiral stone steps of the south tower to overlook the continuous red-tiled roofs of Vienna's old town. The north tower has an elevator, allowing you to admire the approx. 20-ton "Pummerin" bell up close—one of the few giant bells in Austria and among the top-ranking surviving large bells in Europe. It only rings during important festivals like Christmas and New Year, with its deep chimes resonating throughout the entire old town on New Year's Eve.

Hofburg Palace

Located just an hour's drive east of Vienna, the Hof Palace is Austria's largest Baroque complex. The former residence of the Austrian Emperor was once considered one of the magnificent castles of the Habsburg Empire. In 1725, the legendary Savoy general, Prince Eugene, owned this splendid castle, splendid art terrace gardens and manor built in the 17th century. Thirty years later, Queen Maria Theresia bought it. She raised the castle one floor and redesigned the rooms on the first floor. Today visitors can visit Prince Eugene's former residence: from the eastern rooms, visitors can also enjoy views of the vibrant baroque gardens, which are dedicated to the life and work of the art-loving Prince Eugene, Prince of Savoy . The path passes through the neoclassical ballroom of the Baroque church and leads to Queen Maria Theresa's room. The rooms and furnishings on the second floor are also for visitors to appreciate and convey the 18th century lifestyle in an authentic way.
