Old Montreal

Old Montreal is one of the best-preserved historic districts in North America. Founded in 1642 by French settlers along the banks of the St. Lawrence River, it was designated a historic district by Quebec Province in 1964. Cobblestone streets wind through stone buildings dating from the 17th to 19th centuries, where French colonial and Victorian-era architecture stand side by side, making you feel as if you have wandered into an old European city. Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal, Place d'Armes, Place Jacques-Cartier, and Saint-Paul Street West form the core sightseeing axis of the old city, where churches, squares, and ancient streets appear in turn. The Old Port area along the river has been transformed into a waterfront leisure zone, where walking paths, cruise boats, and riverside views blend the historic district with modern vitality. This is also a representative district for experiencing the blend of Montreal's English and French cultures, where the architectural fabric left by the French colonial era coexists with remnants of British municipal-style architecture, creating a neighborhood with a rare combination of historical depth and vibrant local life in a North American city.Montreal · 61.7 km from Piedmont

Old Quebec

Old Quebec is a historic district in North America that retains its complete city walls. It was founded by French explorer Samuel de Champlain in the early 17th century and was once the capital of New France. The old city is divided into the Upper Town and Basse-Ville, and is still surrounded by fortifications such as walls, bastions, and gates. The Upper Town is situated on the high ground of Cap Diamant, with the Château Frontenac standing at its peak as a landmark of the old city. The Dufferin Terrace, located right next to the castle, offers sweeping views of the magnificent St Lawrence River. Basse-Ville is built along the river and centers around Place Royale, where the Notre-Dame-des-Victoires Church is located. The old city is home to numerous churches and convents, with stone houses, copper roofs, and French-style facades creating a unified and unique streetscape. The Upper Town and Basse-Ville are connected by a cable car, or you can walk between them along the Breakneck Stairs, experiencing the legacy of centuries of French colonial culture on the uneven cobblestone streets.Canada · Quebec City

Parliament Hill is located on the south bank of the Ottawa River atParliament Hill, a Gothic Revival architectural complex consisting of the Centre Block, East Block, West Block, and the Library of Parliament. Construction began in 1859 and was largely completed by 1876. A fire in 1916 destroyed the Centre Block, and the rebuilt Peace Tower was completed in 1927 to commemorate Canadians who sacrificed their lives in World War I. The towering clock tower is now a prominent landmark on the Ottawa skyline. The daily Changing of the Guard ceremony and light shows in the summer add a sense of historical depth and modern vitality to this famous Canadian landmark. The Centennial Flame, the open plaza, the towering Peace Tower, the lifelike sculptures, and the Parliament buildings, which are open to the public, attract visitors from all over the world year-round.Canada · Ottawa

Quartier Petit Champlain

66 reviews
Quartier Petit Champlain is the birthplace of Old Quebec and is often considered one of the oldest commercial streets in North America. The street is narrow and paved with cobblestones, lined with stone cottages. Historically, fishermen, dockworkers, and shipbuilders lived here for generations, while today it is filled with rows of small handicraft and souvenir shops, as well as galleries and restaurants. Many shops are run by local artists and artisans, and strolling through it, you can easily feel as if you are in a small European town. There are many noteworthy details on the street. The massive murals painted on the building gables use trompe-l'œil techniques to depict the fires, landslides, and wars that this district has experienced. The Breakneck Stairs at one end connect to the Upper Town, and the platform in the middle of the stairs is a viewpoint for overlooking the entire street.Canada · Quebec City

Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal is located on the western slope of Malawati Hill and is one of the largest Catholic churches in Canada, as well as an important religious pilgrimage site in North America. The oratory was founded in 1904 by Brother André Bessette of the Congregation of Holy Cross, starting as a small chapel and taking over 60 years to build, with full completion in 1967. Its iconic copper dome towers over Malawati Hill, with a design inspired by the Florence Cathedral, making it a highly recognizable landmark in the Montreal skyline. The architectural style is eclectic, featuring a Renaissance Revival facade, while the interior is in the Art Deco style, with granite, wood, and stained glass windows creating a simple yet solemn atmosphere.Montreal · 59.5 km from Piedmont

Montréal Underground City

Montréal Underground City is a vast pedestrian network extending beneath and through the indoor spaces of downtown Montreal. With a total length of over 30 km, it connects more than 60 residential and commercial complexes, multiple subway stations, and thousands of shops, restaurants, and office buildings. Hundreds of thousands of people pass through it every day—it serves as both a daily route for locals to commute and shop, and a unique urban form that has grown to help the city cope with its long, harsh winters. This network was not planned and built all at once; rather, it has developed organically since 1962, starting around Victoria Square, Birmingham and expanding gradually alongside the opening of the Montreal subway and the city's continuous growth. The network integrates multiple subway lines, commuter train stations, large shopping centers, and even sports venues like Centre Bell. With its rich layers of functionality, it has truly become an "indoor city within a city." Strolling through it, the atmosphere is similar to a street-level commercial district, yet you remain in a climate-controlled indoor space the entire time—no need to bundle up in winter or carry an umbrella on rainy days.Montreal · 61.1 km from Piedmont

Mount Royal Park is an iconic urban green space in Montreal, covering over 100 hectares. The city of Montreal derives its name from this hill. Officially opened in 1876, its overall layout is based on the principle of preserving the mountain's natural form, with the road network and vegetation following the terrain rather than being deliberately sculpted. The park's terrain is undulating, with hiking trails, cycling paths, and scenic viewpoints interspersed throughout. The Kondiaronk Lookout offers a commanding view, framing the Montreal city skyline and theSt Lawrence Riverin a single shot. The nearby Mount Royal Chalet is a historic stone building with interiors featuring paintings that depict the city's history.Montreal · 60.1 km from Piedmont

Thousand Islandslie at the outlet where Lake Ontario flows into the St Lawrence River, stretching dozens of km downstream from the Kingston area, with over 1,800 islands of various sizes scattered across the river, belonging to both Canada and the United States. The islands vary greatly in size: the smallest are just a few rocks that remain above water year-round, and some are even small enough to hold only a single house, while the larger ones feature villages and farmland; there is also an interesting local standard for what constitutes an island—a piece of land that remains above water year-round and can support 2 trees counts as an "island." These islands are scattered across the St Lawrence River like stars, resembling a fairytale wonderland.Canada · Leeds and Grenville United Counties

The Rideau Canal is an artificial canal that runs through downtown Ottawa. Construction began in the 1820s to create a military supply route away from the border, and it was completed in approx. six years. It runs from Ottawa to Kingston, spanning a total length of approx. 200 km. Dozens of stone locks along the route are still in operation today, and the entire canal is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Thanks to the strategic value provided by this waterway, Ottawa was later chosen as the capital of Canada, and the canal is often regarded as one of the contributors to the capital's success. In summer, you can paddle a canoe along the canal to enjoy the beautiful city scenery. In winter, the ice surface turns into a natural skating rink, where you can skate to get around.Canada · Ottawa

Parliament Hill is the office of the Canadian government and is usually closed to the public. Now there is a light show every night at 5:30, which projects pictures with constantly changing colors and music. The whole show is about 10 minutes long and is played in a loop all night.

Located in the old town of Quebec, near the cruise ship terminal, you can walk down the stairs or spend a little money to take the cable car down. Petit Champlain Street is not long and is built along the mountain, but there are many shops, especially restaurants and bars. The road is still paved. A bit French!

The old port has a very small capacity and can accommodate one or two small passenger ships. They are probably specialized in inland navigation. There are not many sailings, but many people are willing to take them. This may be because Canadians have a slow pace of life, the transportation facilities are average, and there are no high-speed tools such as high-speed rail. Many people like to experience cruise ship travel.
