"In March when flowers bloom, head to Yangzhou." When visiting Yangzhou in spring, a trip to Slender West Lake is a must. This narrow stretch of waterway offers the perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural heritage. Stroll along the banks to admire scenic views, explore historic pavilions adorned with classical poetry and paintings, or cruise the lake by boat to experience the leisurely pleasure Emperor Qianlong once enjoyed during his royal visits. The attraction is quite expansive, stretching from the Great Rainbow Bridge in the southeast all the way north along the lake to Guanyin Mountain, passing dozens of attractions along the way. There are four main entrances (east, south, west, and north), with most visitors starting their tour at the south entrance on Great Rainbow Bridge Road. This renowned lakeside garden boasts breathtaking natural views. In spring, the area is shaded by lush willows and adorned with camellias, pomegranates, azaleas, and peach blossoms, attracting visitors from across the country to enjoy the seasonal blooms. For centuries, countless literati have lingered here, composing poetry and creating paintings that left behind numerous artistic treasures and stories. The site also features many landscape structures ingeniously designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. The Five Pavilion Bridge in Shugang Slender West Lake Scenic Area is the iconic attraction with over 200 years of history. Featuring five wind pavilions atop, each of the bridge's fifteen arches cradles a moon during full moon nights. Another renowned attraction is the Twenty-Four Bridge, inspired by Du Mu's poetic line "Where is the jade-like beauty teaching flute-playing on the moonlit Twenty-Four Bridge?" While the original bridge no longer exists, visitors can admire its reconstructed version today. This was also a stop during Emperor Qianlong's southern tours in the Qing Dynasty. Architectural views like the Great Rainbow Bridge, Slender West Lake Scenic Area's Fishing Terrace, White Pagoda, and the Twenty-Four Bridges' Xichun Platform all bear inseparable historical anecdotes connected to Emperor Qianlong. During summer nights, the illuminated pavilions and moonlit reflections on the lake create a magical atmosphere. The nightlife experience here is entirely boat-based, offering a relaxing way to beat the summer heat while enjoying gentle lake breezes.China · Yangzhou

Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot is a peninsula in northern Lake Tai, named for its resemblance to a turtle raising its head. Here you can explore expansive garden complexes, cruise across Lake Tai's misty waters, discover hidden wonders on Taihu Fairy Island, or admire cherry blossoms in spring - truly experiencing why it's called "the finest spot of Lake Tai".Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spotthe artistic conception. Every spring, the spectacular cherry blossom display becomes a major attraction here, complemented by the lively cherry blossom festival. Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot in Wuxi is surrounded by water on three sides, offering both the natural beauty of vast lakes dotted with sailing boats and the idyllic charm of rural landscapes with small bridges and flowing streams. It showcases the most breathtaking scenery of Taihu Lake. Taihu Fairy Island isTai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic SpotMust-experience highlights include the Taoist celestial palace and grotto statues blending Taoist and Buddhist elements. Ascending Luding Mountain on the peninsula offers panoramic views of the lakeside greenery, with graceful boat silhouettes visible on sunny days, showcasing Taihu Lake's vast beauty. As a premier cherry blossom destination, Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot offers two unique experiences: first, a "land-water-air" panoramic viewing approach, and second, enchanting night blossoms illuminated by artistic lighting. The early cherry blossoms here typically bloom in early March, featuring mostly single or semi-double petals. Blossoms are categorized by season - early varieties last about one week from first bloom to petal fall, while late varieties bloom for 7–10 days. Temperature variations create 5–12 day gaps between these phases, when hybrid varieties flourish. The iconic Somei Yoshino cherries usually reach peak bloom in mid-to-late March (optimal viewing period), though exact timing depends on weather conditions - cold snaps may delay this floral spectacle. Summer is the perfect time to admire beautiful lotus blossoms. Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic Spot in Wuxi features numerous historical sites and private gardens built by former elites, including Hengyun Villa with its "Finest Spot of Tai Lake" archway and Changchun Bridge, as well as Wuxi's ancient temples.Guangfu TempleMoreover, savoring the traces left by literati and artists throughout history—such as inscriptions, calligraphy, and paintings scattered throughout the site—adds another layer to your visit.Tai Hu Yuantouzhu Scenic SpotOne of the great pleasures here. Confucius Temple-Qinhuai Scenic Area

8
4.7/5
7.3k reviews
The Confucius Temple-Qinhuai Scenic Area refers to the Qinhuai River area centered around the Confucius Temple, where the streets, alleys, residences, and historical sites along both banks form a continuous stretch. It has been a bustling and lively part of Nanjing since ancient times. The line "The swallows that skimmed by painted eaves in bygone days are dipping now among the humble homes' doorways" by Liu Yuxi describes this very place. The Wuyi Lane mentioned in the poem still lies hidden among the alleys near the Confucius Temple. Exploring history along the river is the highlight of this area: The Dacheng hall of Confucius temple stands by the water, with a towering screen wall across the Pan pond in front; the nearby Jiangnan examination hall was the imperial testing site for provincial exams during the Ming and Qing dynasties, now replaced by the China imperial examination museum; Zhan garden and Egret isle park both originated from the mansion gardens of Xu Da's family, a founding general of the Ming dynasty—the former also houses the Taiping heavenly kingdom history museum; scattered along both banks within walking distance are historical sites like Meixiang tower (former residence of "Peach blossom fan" heroine Li Xiangjun), the well-preserved Zhonghua gate with its urn-shaped defense system, Wu Jingzi's residence (author of "The scholars"), and ancient ferry relics like Taoye crossing, easily connected into a historical walking trail. Cuisine is also a signature feature of this area: "The eight Qinhuai delicacies" refer to sixteen famous dishes from eight time-honored snack restaurants, including Yongheyuan's crab-shell yellow sesame cakes and dried shrimp shreds, Qifangge's duck oil crispy cakes and sesame oil dried shreds, Jiangyouji's beef pot stickers, and Lianhu pastry shop's osmanthus-filled glutinous rice balls. The Confucius Temple area and Laomendong are lined with teahouses, snack shops, and various stores, offering plenty of opportunities to rest and grab a bite when tired, along with the chance to pick up some souvenirs. The highlight comes after nightfall: board a painted boat from the pier in front of the Confucius Temple, listen to the guide while admiring the white walls and black tiles illuminated by riverside lanterns—this is the classic "night mooring on the Qinhuai" experience. From Chinese New Year to the Lantern Festival each year, the Qinhuai River Lantern Festival (also known as the Jinling Lantern Festival), listed as a national intangible cultural heritage, takes place here. The Confucius Temple, Laomendong, and along the Qinhuai River are adorned with lanterns and decorations. "Visiting the Confucius Temple to see lanterns during New Year" remains a cherished tradition for Nanjing locals. Even on ordinary days, the area buzzes with cultural temple fairs, food festivals, and other celebrations, offering unique surprises in different seasons.China · Nanjing

Sanhe Ancient Town

Sanhe Ancient Town is situated at the southern tip of Feixi County in Hefei, where the Fengle River, Hangbu River, and Xiaonan River converge. The town derives its name from these three waterways, with the name "Sanhe" appearing as early as the Ming Dynasty and officially becoming Sanhe Town during the Qing Dynasty. In 1858, Taiping Rebellion generals Chen Yucheng and Li Xiucheng achieved a decisive victory over the Xiang Army here, historically known as the "Great Victory of Sanhe." The triumphal arch at the town entrance, Yingwang Mansion, and ancient city walls still bear witness to this turbulent period. The old bluestone-paved streets stretch along the river, lined with contiguous Huizhou-style residences featuring gray brick walls and soaring horse-head gables, blending water-town alleys with Huizhou-style markets seamlessly. Most tours begin at Sanxian Bridge in the town center. To its northwest stands the seven-story Guocui Tower, offering panoramic views of the town and displaying Huizhou artifacts like sedan chairs, inscribed tablets, carved beds, and stone carvings. Nearby, the Dafu Mansion (Sanhe Folk Museum) recreates an official residence's hall with exquisite wood carvings, including an oversized abacus over one meter long. Northeast of the bridge, Xiangu Tower is a Huizhou-style temple funded by merchants including the owner of the time-honored pastry shop "Zhonghexiang." Heading north along the east bank of Xiaonan River leads to ancient West Street, paved with bluestones and once bustling with shops—Liutongxinglongzhuang still maintains its original commercial layout. South along the west bank brings you to Quezhu Covered Bridge, named after Sanhe's ancient moniker "Quezhu," featuring a two-tiered eaves corridor with "beauty's seat" railings perfect for resting and enjoying the waterfront. The southern area around Old South Street and Wannian Street clusters notable former residences, including those of physicist Chen-Ning Yang, general Sun Liren, and Helu. During the Anti-Japanese War, young Chen-Ning Yang sheltered here with his family. Nearby, the famous "One-Person Alley" narrows to barely accommodate a single visitor, making it a popular photo spot. Further south stand Wannian Temple, Chenghuang Temple, and the historic Wannian Stage—Sanhe being the birthplace of Lu Opera, whose authentic melodies often grace the stage during festivals. Local snacks concentrate near Sanxian Bridge: freshly fried Sanhe rice dumplings with crispy shells, shrimp paste, crispy duck, and various river delicacies represent regional cuisine, while tea-flavored dried tofu makes for perfect street-side nibbling. Rice wine and feather fans serve as portable souvenirs. In 2026, Sanhe became a key filming location for CCTV's Spring Festival Gala Hefei segment, with its night scenes of a thousand fish lanterns captivating nationwide audiences.China · Feixi

The Temple of Confucius was built from the remains of Confucius's old residence and is a famous place for making offerings to the scholar. The scale of the Kong Family Mansion is second in China only to the Forbidden City, and it served for hundreds of years as the long-term residence of Confucius's descendants. 100 yuan is alright; the scenery is quite nice, with lots of swans and ducks. Sitting on the boat, listening to the boatwoman's explanations, was very comfortable. After it rained at the Twenty-Four Bridges, we transferred to the park's shuttle bus. It cost 20 yuan and took about 10 minutes. After that, I explored the surrounding area on my own. If you have enough time and energy, I think exploring on foot and slowly appreciating the scenery would be very pleasant.

The overall price is too high for tourists who only want to spend a day there. There isn't much scenery to see, and it's far inferior to Huangshan. It's not even as good as Qiyun Mountain, a Taoist holy site. In fact, Buddhist holy sites are just places for burning incense and worshipping Buddha. In short, some people think it's worth it, while others find it uninteresting.

We were very fortunate that our top guide today was Ms. Dong Ling. Her professional expertise was solid; she didn't just recite from memory. She eloquently explained the stories and archaeological backgrounds behind each of the museum's treasures, making dry history vivid and easy to understand. My son and I deeply experienced the thousand-year history of Nanjing. Highly recommended!

It's pretty good, quite fun. It's a small island, quite large, with many Buddha statues and other attractions, but climbing the mountain can be a bit tiring. You have to take a boat to get there, so it might not be the most exciting part, but it's still a nice place to relax alone on the weekend.

If you haven't been there, it's worth a visit. It's a famous spot in Nanjing, always packed with people. As for the boat tour, if you haven't been before, you can take a ride, but it's probably a one-time thing, so the price isn't great. It's a 40-minute round trip on the boat, listening to the announcements, watching the night view of the Qinhuai River, with its many bridges along the banks. You can learn about history, see the waterscape and night view, and soak in the atmosphere.

I visited twenty years ago. In those twenty years, scenic spots across the country have undergone tremendous changes, but the Three Confucian Sites seem to have made little progress. The Confucius Cemetery looks like a mountain in the suburbs; besides Confucius's tomb, there's not much to see. The Confucius Mansion is basically a Republican-era style; everything is new. Compared to other grand sites like the Qiao Family Compound and the Zhu Family Garden, it's nothing. The Confucius Temple is alright, with history and artifacts. The entire scenic area reeks of horse urine, and the roads are covered in tree sap that sticks to your shoes. This was supposed to be one of the earliest 5A-level scenic areas!

Encountering Tuohu Wetland is indeed a pleasant surprise. Under the background of ecological protection, local governments have raised awareness of wetland park protection and improved construction at a rapid pace. Tuohu Wetland is blessed with beautiful natural scenery, strong cultural atmosphere, rich water quality and pleasant climate. It is one of the few natural ecological wetlands in northern Anhui, and the best place for tourists to travel, vacation, family gatherings, and leisure.

The biggest surprise of my trip to Xuzhou was undoubtedly the Guishan Han Tomb, absolutely worth a special trip. The ancients carved this Chu king's mausoleum into the mountainside, a feat of engineering that is truly astonishing. The long, straight, and orderly passageway, with its tightly joined stones, showcases the superb craftsmanship of the Han Dynasty artisans. The tomb chambers are clearly divided into functional areas, and the dense chisel marks on the stone walls are all imprints left from two thousand years ago. The guide's engaging explanations of the tomb's occupant's story and the fascinating legends surrounding the stone walls' illusions keep the experience entertaining. A visit to the Imperial Edict Museum is also included, with its impressive collection. The overall tour is of moderate length and not too tiring; history buffs shouldn't miss this place.
