The “House of the Huangcheng Chancellor” was the official mansion of the famous Qing dynasty official Chen Tingjing, who was the chief editor of the Kangxi Dictionary (the standard Chinese dictionary of the 18th and 19th centuries) and tutor of Emperor Kangxi. The entire architectural complex is divided into an “inner city” and “outer city,” and the architectural style is similar to that of the Qiao Family Compound or Wang Family Compound in Shanxi; all are classic examples of the northern courtyard architecture of the Ming and Qing dynasties (1368-1912). However, it is different in that as many as 38 members of the Chen clan who resided here were government officials. The complex also has a plaque inscribed and bestowed by the Kangxi Emperor himself, in honor of the complex and its owner.Yangcheng · 16 km from downtown

Guoyu Village is also the former residence of Zhang Pengyun, the governor of Shuntian in the Ming Dynasty, Zhang Ersu, the assistant minister of the Ministry of Justice in the Qing Dynasty, and Wang Chongxin, a wealthy businessman in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. It is the place where Chen Tingjing, a university scholar of Wenyuan Pavilion in the Qing Dynasty, grew up, and it is also the place where the Seventh Military Medical University, the predecessor of the Third Military Medical University, was established. Guoyu Village has a long history. It was built by the Guo family and named after their surname. Guoyu was first built in the early Tang Dynasty. In the Ming Dynasty, Guoyu was a village, and in the Qing Dynasty, it was also called a town. In the sixth year of the Republic of China (1917), the village system was implemented and Guoyuli was renamed Guoyu Village. Guoyu Village is large in scale and well-formed. The ancient building area of the village is 180,000 square meters, with city walls and towers, official residences, houses, temples and ancestral halls, shops and workshops, gardens and gardens, gatehouses and screen walls, wells, and ruins. Dili City was built on a small hill, with villages and towns to the south and Qin River to the north. It was surrounded by water on three sides and shaped like a peninsula. Looking at the city from a distance, it looked like a rock-like pillar standing in the middle of the river, hence the name Dili City. The construction date of the city is unknown, but from the stele "A View of the Mountain City" in the 11th year of the Chongzhen reign of the Ming Dynasty (1638), it is known that its founding date should be before the end of the Ming Dynasty. The city is oval in shape, built of bricks, and covers an area of about 60,000 square meters. There is a main gate in the south, and the city wall rises from the ground, about ten meters high. The riverside city wall is built from the riverside, about 20 meters high, with battlements and artillery platforms, etc., which are used to guard against foreign enemies. It is now destroyed. The main gate is inscribed with "Diji City", which is the passage for residents in the city to go out; there are stone stairs along the city wall in the north of the city, and you can go down the stairs to the water gate to take a boat. The roads in the city are regular, and a ring road is built around the city. The rest are residential lanes, and all kinds of facilities are complete. In ancient times, when there was chaos and chaos, the city gates were closed, forming a self-contained entity that could not be broken. The houses in the city are divided into ten blocks, which are arranged in an orderly manner. The houses are connected by overpasses at the top of each alley, which is convenient for people to walk. Most of these houses are single-entry and double-courtyard houses. Most of the houses in the courtyard are double-storey, and most of them have corridors. The door lintels of the houses are all inscribed with the words "XX House", which is quite elegant. One of them is "Youheng House", which has fine wood and stone construction craftsmanship, four beams and eight pillars, four doors and eight windows, and has a strong folk style.Yangcheng · 10.3 km from downtown

Xiangyu Ancient Castle

On the picturesque map of Qinshui, a county with millennia of history, lies a hidden treasure—Xiangyu Ancient Castle. Xiangyu Ancient Castle is located in Xiangyu Village, approximately 50 km southeast of Qinshui County, Shanxi Province. This historic site was the hometown of Sun Juxiang (Minister of Revenue) and Sun Dingxiang (Vice Censor-in-Chief of the Censorate) during the late Ming Dynasty. Recognized as a National Key Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a AAAA-level tourist attraction, it has been acclaimed by experts as "China's Premier Ming Dynasty Rural Castle in Northern China." The ancient fortress stands with Phoenix Mountain to the north, Xiangyu River to the south, Dongyang Mountain to the east, and Tiger Valley Peak to the west, blending architecture with natural landscapes to create a rustic and pristine beauty. Built under the direction of brothers Sun Juxiang and Sun Dingxiang, construction began in 1614 during the Ming Dynasty's Wanli era and was completed in 1634 during the Chongzhen era, spanning 20 years. Covering approximately 32,500 square meters, the south-facing fortress is built against the mountain with layered courtyards and towering structures, showcasing grandeur. It uniquely combines military defense, East-meets-West architectural fusion, and metaphysical design elements. The ancient fortress features a "three-horizontal, nine-vertical" street layout resembling scattered stars, forming a honeycomb-style castle from the Ming Dynasty. Within its walls lie eight cultural theme courtyards showcasing military defense, folk customs, historical officialdom, and imperial examination traditions. The hidden troop tunnels stand as masterpieces of the cold weapon era, combining professional defensive structures with a unique bead-string corridor design. The surviving "Panorama Tower" blends Eastern and Western architectural elements, featuring arched doorways and windows adorned with intricate "eyebrow-eave hanging pillar" brick carvings—an oriental fortress with distinct Western influences. Mystical patterns of ancient metaphysics like the "Hetu Luoshu," the fortress's strategic grid layout, and distinctive "tiger-paw paths" further shroud the entire castle in an aura of mystery. Xiangyu Ancient Castle is the epitome of Taihang ancient fortresses, a model of Ming and Qing architecture, and a marvel of harmonious integration with its natural surroundings. It has become a hub for traditional Chinese culture, a filming location for movies and TV shows, and a popular spot for artistic sketching. Now evolving into a slow-living destination, it offers visitors a perfect retreat for wellness, leisure, and vacation.Qinshui · 18.5 km from Yangcheng

The Huangcheng Xiangfu (Imperial City Prime Minister's Residence) exudes a profound sense of history, with the cultural essence emanating from every wooden plank. The architecture is remarkably scientific, built along the contours of the mountain for added stability. Surrounded by lush greenery and verdant hills, it forms a natural protective umbrella.

After visiting the Huangcheng Xiangfu (Imperial City Prime Minister's Residence), it's about a ten-minute walk to reach Guoyu Ancient City (Guoyu Castle). Guoyu Ancient City is a fortified village built during the Ming Dynasty, and also the ancestral home of Chen Tingjing, a famous prime minister of the Qing Dynasty. Within the ancient city, the well-preserved Yuan Dynasty Tangdi Temple boasts a rare nine-bay main hall and a 20-meter-high stage. The Yulou Tower, a "fortress within a fortress" built during the Ming Dynasty, could accommodate thousands of people for refuge, and climbing to the top offers a panoramic view of the entire ancient city. The 1400-meter-long Ming Dynasty city wall features three layers of 628 hidden military tunnels on its inner side, a unique feature in China. Guoyu Ancient City is a national key cultural relics protection unit, a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, and a famous historical and cultural village in China, also hailed as a gem of Chinese vernacular architecture.

Runcheng, you may have never heard of it Dijicheng, you may not have read it correctly Pork offal, you may not have eaten it This is Runcheng Town, Yangcheng County, Jincheng City, only seven kilometers away from the Imperial City Xiangfu 🌟Highlights: Dijicheng: National VI It is connected to Runcheng Town in the south and Qin River in the north. It is surrounded by water on three sides and is in the shape of a peninsula. From a distance, it looks like a rock-hard pillar standing in the middle of the stream, so it is named Dijicheng. This place is like a small maze, where every household lives This place is like a big castle, with iron shields guarding the outside The only bad thing is that the north gate has too many artificial traces because of the evening performance Runcheng Dongyue Temple Built before the Great Jin Dynasty, it was rebuilt in the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. The glazed roof ridge, animal heads, and tiles are comparable to the Forbidden City. The caisson of the offering hall is unique and very beautiful. The harem in the backyard will be forgotten by many careless people Next to the bus station This is not a historical site, but a modern building corresponding to the historical site , you can take beautiful photos by looking up 🍲Food recommendation When the pig offal in front of Dongyue Temple is out of the pot, there will be a long queue. 10 yuan a bowl is not expensive, you can taste it The jujube cake in front of Dongyue Temple is cheaper and more delicious than the one in Dili City, 10 yuan for 4 🚉Transportation strategy: There is a direct bus from Jincheng East Station for 1 yuan per hour. Please note that the latest return time is 16:30, and 17:30 is for passing buses **For more travel notes in Southeast Shanxi and the whole country, you can click on the collection "Traveling in Southeast Shanxi on a Poor Budget, 0 Yuan Transportation" and the blogger's homepage**

Strolling through Xiangyu Ancient Castle feels like stepping back 600 years to the Ming Dynasty. The mottled walls, the scattered cave dwellings, and the deep, secluded alleys—every brick and tile carries the weight of history. The honeycomb-style hidden troop tunnels are ingenious and awe-inspiring. Climbing the Yilan Tower offers panoramic views; the ancient castle at the foot of the Taihang Mountains possesses both the grandeur of a military fortress and the warmth of ancient village life. Free from the hustle and bustle of excessive commercialization, only the tranquility accumulated over time remains, allowing one to understand the wisdom and perseverance of the ancients. This trip was incredibly rewarding, leaving us wanting more. The tour guides were warm and attentive! A big thumbs up to our guide, Xiao Li, for taking such beautiful photos of us! 👇Photos of the lovely young lady!

It's just a general scenic spot. There are still many residents in the scenic area. The scenic area is not very popular and the signs are not clear. There is mainly one street (Guhe Street) with some old houses on both sides. Wangfu is the residence of Wang Guoguang in the Ming Dynasty. Go there when you have time, no need to go specially. It's not far from the Imperial City Xiangfu, about 15 minutes by car.
