Yamagata's Ancient Temple in the Sky
Introducing a place where a haiku that everyone has heard at least once was composed.
'The tranquility—penetrating the rocks, the cicada's cry'
This is a haiku by Matsuo Basho that everyone has heard at least once. The location is 📍
This time, we introduce 'Hojusan Risshakuji Temple' located in Yamagata City, Yamagata Prefecture.
We would like to provide information that will be helpful for those visiting for the first time!
★ Also known as 'Yamadera'
The place is commonly called 'Yamadera' because it has over 30 pagodas and halls of various sizes standing on a rugged rocky mountain.
★ Founded in 860
The temple has a deep history, and it is said to have been founded by the third-generation Tendai sect's Great Master Ennin in 860, just like Chusonji Temple in Iwate's Hiraizumi, Zuiganji Temple in Miyagi's Matsushima, and Osorezan in Aomori's Shimokita.
★ A pilgrimage route with 1015 stone steps
There are 1015 long stone steps to climb to reach the inner sanctuary 🥾
It is said that climbing the steps will eliminate worldly desires ☀️
Although it's a challenging path, there are many attractions along the way, such as historical monuments and scenic spots, making it an intellectually and sensually enjoyable pilgrimage route❗️
★ The 'Godaido' standing as if jutting out from a cliff
As you climb the pilgrimage route, there is a spot where you can overlook the spectacular view from the top of the mountain, which is the 'Godaido'
It gives you the sensation of being at the same height as the opposite mountain
The view from this observatory is truly beautiful ✨
★ Allow over an hour for the visit!
The one-way time required to reach the inner sanctuary and Godaido of Risshakuji Temple is estimated to be 30-45 minutes for young people and 45-60 minutes for the elderly!
Since it's quite a distance to climb, we recommend wearing sturdy shoes like sneakers 👟

Enjoyed climbing the steps up and the amazing scenery and autumn leaves colour. The local snack konyaku is also delicious with the amazing hospitality from the local seller and people.
There are still quite a lot of tourists in the temple, especially Taiwanese. It's nice to see snow in winter, but the weather also needs attention. It's easy to avalanche if there's a lot of noise in the mountains. Then the snow fills the neck and snows all over the shoes, which is very uncomfortable. There will be 300 yen tickets at the foot of the mountain. If you want to go to the toilet, remember to go to the toilet at this time, because there is no toilet on the mountain. Yes. And if it snows, the road is very slippery. It's much better to have ice claws. If the shoes are not waterproof, you can borrow rainshoes for free next door to the ticket office, but it's cold.
The hill-shaped Lishi Temple is the Tiantaizong Temple in the hill-shaped county and city. Since ancient times, it has been believed to be "the Temple of cutting off evil ties". The "slide" built in 1950 as a "vehicle" is still intact and about 300 meters long. It is not exciting.
From JR station, due to the good weather on the day, you can see the distant buildings, which is Lishi Temple. After climbing to the top, you can see the scenery on the other side, right! ! !
The scenery here is so beautiful! The spring water is clear like a mirror, and the mountains are full of colorful wild flowers. It is really like a beautiful landscape painting against the blue sky and white clouds.
I really like it here, it just happened that the weather was good that day and the sun would not feel cold. Really great experience
Shan Temple is a place worth visiting, just to reach the top of the mountain only by two legs, the mountain road is steep, the scenery is very good. People who like sports may wish to take a walk. The mountain temple seems to be the road of the practitioner. There are small temples in many places on the cliffs. Go in May, The weather is good and the temperature is good.
