Everyone just passes through here. Why is Ancona the most overlooked city in Italy? 🇮🇹🚢
#underratedspots bet when you think of Italy, Ancona isn't the first place that comes to mind. Most people only come here to hop on a ferry at the local terminal and immediately disappear to Greece or Croatia. I was planning to do the same. But then I went for a walk... and realized we are making a huge mistake. While in Rome or Venice you fight for every inch with crowds of tourists, here you have true, raw Italy almost to yourself. Plus, this city has an absolutely amazing contrast between the giant cranes in the port and the quiet history towering on the hills above it. Here are the places that completely blew me away in Ancona: · Arch of Trajan: This massive marble gem stands on an elevated spot right by the sea. It is an incredible piece of preserved history, but unlike famous Roman monuments, you don't wait in any lines for a photo here. · Cattedrale di San Ciriaco: This is an imposing cathedral led to by wide stone steps from the square. It towers high on a hill surrounded by greenery and forms an unmistakable landmark of the coast. · Panoramic views: From the viewpoints on the hill, there is an absolutely breathtaking view down to the Adriatic Sea, giant anchored ferries, and historic buildings scattered across the slopes. · Mole Vanvitelliana: A beautiful historic building with a massive stone gate, lying surrounded by water. Today it is a great place with a view of anchored small sailboats and catamarans. · Piazza del Plebiscito: A very authentic Italian square lined with colorful building facades, dominated by a church with a staircase in the background. You won't find crowded tourist traps here, just tables of local restaurants, traditional paving, and total peace.
