On the blue planet inhabited by humans, there are always some extraordinary places. Some gather all the brilliant colors of the Earth; others are extremely desolate, like alien worlds, full of fantastical beauty unlike reality... If extraterrestrials ever stayed on Earth, then Cappadocia in Turkey must be their masterpiece.
I have long known that Turkey has this strange land.
Standing in the heart of the Anatolian Plateau, looking at Cappadocia draped in a lunar cloak, it truly feels like an alien secret realm fallen to Earth.
This land, listed as a World Cultural Heritage site and named one of the "Top Ten Earthly Wonders" by National Geographic, is also a natural filming location favored by sci-fi movies and shows.
Setting foot on this land, you understand that describing it as the "moon’s surface" is no exaggeration. The gray-yellow rock and soil stretch endlessly, sparse vegetation dots the desolation, and thousands of stone pillars rise from the ravines. Locals call them "fairy chimneys," a wondrous sight never seen before.
These peculiar stone pillars are the work of nature’s craftsmanship over millions of years. Millions of years ago, two massive volcanoes erupted violently, burying the entire plain in lava. Long-term erosion by wind and rain sculpted the soft tuff into its current form.
Looking closely, the landforms are bizarre and varied: some slender as needles piercing the sky, others stout and squat, topped with dark basalt "hats," resembling giant morel mushrooms on the wasteland. From a high vantage point, this "stone forest" is vast and magnificent. Walking among them, every step treads on geological rings billions of years old, like flipping through a thick rock history book, as if walking on another planet.
This seemingly moon-like barren land hides a unique romantic charm. Countless "fairy chimneys" were hollowed out by ancient people into cave dwellings, now transformed into distinctive cave hotels. Opening the wooden door, the room retains the original rough texture of the rock, with faint millennia-old chisel marks on the walls. There are no luxurious modern facilities, yet it exudes quiet comfort. The natural air conditioning keeps the room warm in winter and cool in summer. Lying inside, you can look out the window to see scattered stone stalagmites and the distant town scenery. At dusk, the sunset dyes the rock walls red. Staying in this "alien" wonderland and immersing yourself in the ancient civilization deep within the Earth is the most precious experience of the trip.
The magic of Cappadocia goes far beyond the surface scenery; the true secret lies buried beneath the ground. More than thirty underground cities have been discovered here, like secret treasure troves sleeping for thousands of years beneath the loess. The most stunning is the Derinkuyu Underground City.
Walking slowly down the stone steps, the light gradually dims, and warm light illuminates the winding passages. The entire city extends layer upon layer, with alleys crisscrossing like a maze, easy to get lost without guidance. The most amazing feature is the giant circular stone door at the entrance, serving as the defensive core. When the gate is lowered, it can isolate the outside world. The city has ventilation shafts, storage rooms, water wells, and wine cellars, all fully equipped for long-term self-sufficiency. Its exquisite and grand design is breathtaking.
The builders of the underground city remain shrouded in historical mystery. The mainstream theory is that persecuted Christians carved it out as a refuge; however, the engineering is so vast and sophisticated that folklore also spreads strange speculations. Some say it is the legacy of a mysterious civilization, others guess it is an alien base. These unproven legends add to the underground city’s mystique.
Here, the "Goreme Town," "Uchisar Castle," "Pigeon Valley," "Love Valley," and "Rose Valley" are all masterpieces of nature.
Days in Cappadocia always feel like a "Star Wars" journey: hiking on the "moon’s surface" by day, watching the fairy chimneys change colors under the sun; waiting for the sunset on a cave terrace at dusk.
The cave hotel where I stayed, called the "Mystic Cave Suite," with the blue eye at the door and the cat outside the room, adds a touch of earthly warmth to this fantastical alien secret realm.
