Lovely Stay but Not Without Drawbacks
This was our 25th trip to a Maldivian resort, and we enjoyed our stay at Sandies Bathala. The hotel has certainly changed a lot since its reconstruction after our visit in September 2017. Back then, there were only about 10-12 guests, while this time, the occupancy rate was approximately 90%, with most being fellow countrymen, alongside some Italians and Germans. We stayed in water villa 208, which, despite a few flaws, was quite comfortable. Its location, offering easy access to the reef, was ideal. Surprisingly, there were many small children at the resort, which seemed unusual since Bathala Island is traditionally known for diving and snorkeling enthusiasts. The island lacks a kids’ club, and the entry points for swimming are quite limited. Before our trip, we were concerned about coral damage, which has become common in many Maldivian reefs. However, we were delighted to find a large number of healthy corals, which is remarkable these days. **Pros of the hotel:** 1. Snorkeling on the house reef remains fun and enjoyable, with well-preserved corals and plenty of marine life. 2. The hotel staff did an excellent job. Our room was cleaned impeccably, and the chefs, waiters, and bartenders were all friendly. 3. No mosquitoes in the resort, unlike some other Maldivian hotels. 4. The water villa was cozy, featuring a spacious deck with a large awning. 5. The hotel grounds were well-maintained, making it comfortable to walk barefoot everywhere. 6. The abundance of orchids was a lovely touch. 7. A very pleasant Russian-speaking guest relations manager, Nika. **Cons of the hotel:** 1. The restaurant food was average for our taste. Other than pizza and pasta, we hoped for more variety. 2. There were few good spots for easy swimming entry into the ocean. 3. We were excited about the sunset fishing trip, but it was disappointing. The chosen locations were poorly selected—one had shallows due to low tide, and the other had strong currents that made it difficult to drop bait. The fish we caught tasted bland and seemed more boiled than grilled. 4. In the water villa, the lowest steps submerged in water were awkward for climbing in and out. Water pressure was weak, and there wasn’t an outdoor shower in the bathroom. Also, there was no designated place to dry swimsuits. Overall, we liked the hotel, but we’re unlikely to visit for a third time.
