Bremen City Hall (Rathaus Bremen), located in the market square in the heart of Bremen, Germany, was originally built in the 15th century in a typical medieval Gothic style. A major renovation was carried out in the early 17th century, adding a Renaissance-style facade. Miraculously, it escaped destruction during World War II. Next to the City Hall stands the famous bronze statue of the Bremen city musicians from Grimm's Fairy Tales. In July 2004, it was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site along with the adjacent Roland Statue. Key reasons for its designation include its symbolism of freedom and judicial independence in medieval northern German cities; its fusion of Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles, making it one of the finest city halls in Europe; and its continued status as the administrative center of the local government, remaining open to the public.
