Chasing Autumn Day 6: At the foot of the Yin Mountains in Chilechuan, packing up autumn to take home — traveler post in Fengzhen

Chasing Autumn Day 6: At the foot of the Yin Mountains in Chilechuan, packing up autumn to take home

Oct 6, the last day of chasing autumn, is reserved for a few scenic spots at the foothills of the Yin Mountains north of Hohhot. Route: Chilechuan Grassland → Huanghuawopu Alpine Grassland → Hongshiya → Hongzhao Jiulongwan. Just passing through, not entering the scenic areas, as the scenery along the way is beautiful enough. Just start snapping photos—you'll be speechless at every shot! 📸 📍 1. Chilechuan Grassland Navigate to "Aobao Xianghui" to see the hay bale "Swiss rolls" 😍 The grassland is already being harvested, but the developed scenic area has left some Swiss rolls—plenty for photos! Although Chilechuan Grassland is relatively small, the background is the Yin Mountains 🏔️. Standing there, you'll understand the meaning of "Chilechuan, at the foot of the Yin Mountains," instantly transported back into the ancient poems! 📍 2. Chilechuan Equestrian Base There weren't many tourists today, so we rode 4 horses 🐴 for half an hour. We bargained down to a total of 200 yuan, and the experience was top-notch! Riding on horseback while looking at the autumn grassland is just too cool! ✨ 📍 3. Huanghuawopu Alpine Grassland Formerly Chilechuan Alpine Grassland. There are still quite a few yellow leaves along the road 🍁, but further north, the birch trees have already shed their leaves and are bare. However, the autumn colors here are just right; the golden grassland paired with the blue sky and white clouds is breathtaking! 📍 4. Hongshiya The golden forests along the road are so beautiful it's almost unfair ✨. The car window is a picture frame, and I couldn't stop taking photos the whole way! The mountain sunset deep in Hongshiya paired with the winding river makes every casual shot a masterpiece 🌅 📍 5. Hongzhao Jiulongwan No ticket needed, just passing through. A routine registration is fine. Just start snapping photos along this route—it's not just beautiful, it's even more beautiful! The layering of autumn colors in the Jiulongwan valley is amazing; the layers of golden yellow paired with the winding riverbed are so photogenic! 📷 🏠 Accommodation Last night, we stayed in a yurt ⛺ at a homestay near Chilechuan Grassland. Although it was in a resident's yard and not on the open grassland, it had a bathroom and air conditioning, and the price was right 💯. It was close to the scenic area, making travel convenient—happiness level up! Goodbye, Inner Mongolia. Chasing autumn was a success! Returning with a full load 🎒. This corporate worker is returning to the office with some mental fuel ~ 🧑‍💻 ⚠️ Tips: ✔️ If driving, fill up on gas in advance ⛽ and download offline maps, as the signal is weak in some places 📶

Hidden Gem in Daqingshan | Shengshuiliang Jiulong Bay, A Healing Autumn Retreat in the Mountains — traveler post in Fengzhen

Hidden Gem in Daqingshan | Shengshuiliang Jiulong Bay, A Healing Autumn Retreat in the Mountains

【Introduction】: Nestled deep within Daqingshan and not far from Hohhot city center, Shengshuiliang Jiulong Bay is often referred to as the "Little Guilin of the North." With highland grasslands on one side and dense forests on the other, accompanied by gorges and streams, this destination offers blooming flowers in spring, a cool retreat in summer, and golden hues in autumn. It's a treasure trove for short mountain getaways, photography, and sightseeing near Hohhot. 【Opening Hours】: May 1 – October 31: 08:00–19:00; From November: 08:00–18:30. Recommended visit duration: 3–5 hours. Autumn is the prime viewing season, but note that temperatures can vary greatly in the mountains, with cooler mornings and evenings. 【Ticket Prices】: General admission is 38 RMB for adults, with discounts available for students and seniors. Holders of the Inner Mongolia Tourism Card can redeem a free admission ticket. Additional fees apply for activities like the cable car, glass walkway, and aerial rafting. Parking costs 10 RMB per vehicle. 【Activities】: Start with a visit to the Shengshuiliang alpine meadows for panoramic mountain views, perfect for photography. Then head to Jiulong Bay Gorge to walk the glass walkway and enjoy a bird's-eye view of the valley. Thrill-seekers can try the cliff swing or aerial rafting. For families, there are attractions like the shouting fountain, bamboo rafting, and Dinosaur Valley. A leisurely stroll along the forest trails is also a great way to relax and breathe in fresh air. 【Transportation Tips】: Self-driving is highly recommended. Navigate to Hongzhao Jiulong Bay; it's about a one-hour drive from Hohhot. Public transportation is not very convenient, so consider carpooling or hiring a car. The mountain road scenery along the way is stunning. 【Itinerary Suggestions】: Ideal for a day trip, but if you have more time, you can explore nearby mountain spots. The park offers simple meals, but you can also bring your own snacks. For a more leisurely visit, there are local farmhouses nearby where you can stay overnight. 【Preparation Tips】: The mountain has strong UV rays, so bring sunscreen. Pack a warm jacket as it gets windy in autumn. Wear comfortable, non-slip sneakers, and bring a water bottle, some snacks, and mosquito repellent.

I've just returned from Ulanqab and had a rough time, so I really don't recommend coming in September–October. — traveler post in Fengzhen

I've just returned from Ulanqab and had a rough time, so I really don't recommend coming in September–October.

Let's start with the best photo spots so you don't waste your trip. The stairs at the North Furnace of Volcano No. 3 in Ulan Hada are well-maintained, so climbing up for a panoramic shot isn't tiring. Wearing a white down jacket or a red scarf makes it look like you're on a business trip to Mars. The black sand terrain of the South Furnace at Volcano No. 6 is better for close-ups. After 4:00 PM, the side lighting makes every shot look high-end. Huitengxile Grassland turns golden brown in October; the windmills and low clouds look like a desktop wallpaper, but the wind is strong enough to blow your wig off, so don't push yourself when taking photos, or you'll have a breakdown when your makeup gets ruined. Huanghuagou is less crowded in autumn, and the birch trees along the ravine combined with the grass colors are very gentle. Book your tickets on Trip.com to skip the lines. Dahongshan is in Siziwang Banner; the sunset over the red gullies is stunning. It's a long drive, but the photos look great even without editing. Hongshiya is great for shooting late autumn forests; if you don't want to climb volcanoes, come here to catch your breath. Here’s my guide to avoiding pitfalls, learned from my own silly mistakes. Ulanqab in October is no joke. It might be around 10–15°C during the day, but once the sun sets, it can drop near zero. I only wore a coat and suffered that night, with a runny nose like a tragic heroine. I don't recommend waiting around for the sunset near the volcanoes; once the wind picks up, the wind chill is brutal. If you don't have a down jacket, a hat, and hand warmers, you're just asking for trouble. If you're driving, don't trust your GPS 100%. Signal cuts out on some of the smaller volcano roads, so download offline maps in advance, or you'll be crying while driving in circles on a barren hill. For activities like horseback riding, grass sliding, and go-karts, ask for the total price before you start. Don't get lured by the low prices at the entrance, only to find out at checkout that it's twice as expensive as expected—it's a total mood killer. I really don't recommend having full meals at scenic area restaurants, especially at the volcanoes and Huanghuagou. The prices might look okay, but the portions and service might not match. It's safer to head back to Jining if you want to eat hand-grabbed mutton. And don't even try to tough it out camping in the October night temperatures; without professional gear, you're just paying to suffer. Staying in a city hotel is nothing to be ashamed of. Plan a relaxed itinerary so it actually feels like a vacation. On the first day, arrive in Jining, drop off your luggage, have lunch, and head to Ulan Hada. Take photos at No. 3 and No. 6, then head to LAVA Hot Spring in the evening to warm up. Soaking in the hot spring after playing at the volcanoes is great for your legs and your mood. On the second day, leave Jining for Huitengxile. See the grassland lakes first, then enter Huanghuagou and take the shuttle bus to explore the valley. Don't rely entirely on walking; in October, even a small drop in stamina can lead to a breakdown. On the third day, choose between Hongshiya or Dahongshan. Hongshiya is closer and easier for photos; Dahongshan is further away with explosive colors, but it takes a long time to get there and back—only go if you love photography. I usually compare prices for all tickets, car rentals, and hotels on Trip.com, especially for Huanghuagou and volcano combo tickets, as buying them on-site can be confusing. Don't schedule 4 major attractions a day. Ulanqab is vast and the spots are scattered. Rushing around is more tiring than working, and you'll just want to lie flat when you get back. Here are some food recommendations to avoid pitfalls. For breakfast in the old town of Jining, try lamb offal soup with "beizi" (baked flatbread). The soup is rich and not gamey, and it's very filling when you break the bread into it. Oat noodles with lamb sauce are the local soul food; they're fragrant and filling, and the cold version with vinegar sauce is great in summer and autumn. For hand-grabbed mutton, choose a place in the city where they weigh it by the jin (500g) and stew it plain. Dip it in chive flower sauce and garlic vinegar. Don't order set meals at scenic areas; the prices will make you question reality. Buy Zhuozi smoked chicken from an old shop in vacuum packaging; it has a cypress wood aroma and the meat is firm, not dry. It's a great snack to take home. Don't be tempted by cheap, loose-packed ones on the side of the road. For Mongolian salty pot tea, order a small pot if it's your first time. It's made with brick tea, milk, fried rice, and milk skin. It's salty, not a sweet milk tea, so you might be surprised if you aren't prepared. Shaomai is sold by the liang (50g). The lamb and wild onion filling is juicy; go to an old shop in the morning for the best experience. For a late-night snack, visit the Jining night market for oat noodles, dairy products, and small skewers. Fengzhen mooncakes made with flaxseed oil are also a great souvenir. Overall, honestly speaking, have your main meals in the city and only eat light snacks at scenic areas. Your wallet and your stomach will thank you.

After 3 days in Ulanqab, my perception of value was redefined. — traveler post in Fengzhen

After 3 days in Ulanqab, my perception of value was redefined.

In August, Ulanqab's average temperature is just over 20 degrees Celsius, making it a natural air conditioner, a gift from above🌿. I've just returned from my trip there and quickly put together this super detailed guide. I've organized it so you can easily find what interests you. 🚌 [Transportation tips] From Beijing, a high-speed train takes a little over 2 hours to Ulanqab Station. Upon arrival, it's recommended to book a local car service or rent a car directly on Trip.com, as attractions are far apart, and relying on taxis will be frustrating. For the Volcano Scenic Area, customized self-driving tours will require advance booking and ticket purchase starting July 15, 2026. On Trip.com, it's best to book 2 to 5 days in advance for weekends and holidays, otherwise, you won't be able to drive in and will have to take the shuttle bus🚐. Phone signal is spotty in Huitengxile Grassland and the Volcanoes, so make sure to download offline maps before you go. 📸 [Must-visit photo spots, highly recommended] At the foot of Volcano No. 6, take amazing "landing on Mars" photos. The light is best at 4:00 PM; black lava with white clothes and a yellow skirt makes for stunning photos📷. The red phone booth at the summit of Volcano No. 3 is an iconic, must-visit photo spot. For the wind turbine matrix in Huitengxile Grassland, wait for the 6:30 PM sunset; wind turbine silhouettes against a sea of golden lotus flowers will have everyone on your social media asking for the location. After taking sunset photos at Volcano No. 5, don't leave. After 9:00 PM, with no light pollution, the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye, and you can even capture star trails with your phone🌌. On the Huitengxile Grassland mini-train, sit in the last carriage and take reverse shots of the wind turbines and flower sea for fewer crowds and even more stunning views. 🎫 [Ticket booking cheat sheet] Entry to the volcanoes themselves is free, but self-driving requires a customized ticket for CNY 60 per person. A shuttle bus ticket is CNY 30 per person. It's safest to buy these in advance on Trip.com. The Huitengxile Grassland admission ticket is CNY 90. It's recommended to get the full transportation package for CNY 265, as the scenic area is very large, and walking purely will exhaust you. The Ulanqab Museum is free but closed on Mondays, so remember to avoid that day. The Ulanqab Night · Tianjiao Grand Event starts at 2:30 PM during the day, offering a new landmark for ancient-style night tours, complete with bonfires and food🎆. 🍖 [Local delicacies, clearly listed for you] Hand-grabbed lamb – Clear-broth boiled lamb ribs with wild chive flower sauce, incredibly fresh Copper pot mutton hotpot – Charcoal copper pot with hand-cut fresh lamb, plus fried milk skin with sugar Lamb and green onion shaomai – Eight pieces per liang, thin skin and generous filling, paired with brick tea to cut the richness Oat noodle nests – Eaten with lamb soup, a staple food for Ulanqab locals since childhood Zhuozishan smoked chicken – Smoked in an old cypress wood broth, an intangible cultural heritage craft, tender skin and fragrant meat Wild onion buns – The fresh aroma of unique grassland wild vegetables, a bite releases juicy flavor Salty milk tea + milk skin – A standard Mongolian breakfast, surprisingly good at first sip, increasingly addictive Fengzhen mooncakes – Old-fashioned recipe with flaxseed oil, crispy and not greasy ⚠️ [Tips to avoid pitfalls, learned from my own mistakes] Bottled water in scenic areas costs CNY 8 to 10, while the same brand is only CNY 2 at supermarkets in town. Be sure to stock up on water and snacks before heading into the mountains🥤. Grassland UV rays are no joke; high-SPF sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat are essential. The day-night temperature difference can be 20 degrees Celsius, so remember to bring a windbreaker for stargazing at night. For horseback riding, always choose a reputable stable. Agree on the duration and price before getting on the horse. Avoid wild horses by the roadside; being charged extra mid-ride is a common tactic🐎. For vacuum-packed dairy products and beef jerky, go to supermarkets in town rather than scenic area shops; they are about 35% cheaper. The last few kilometers to Laoli Lake are dirt roads; drive slowly if you have a sedan and don't venture off paved roads, as you might get stuck. Gegentala is near the border, so carry your ID card with you, and drones are prohibited. 🗺️ [Super detailed 4-day, 3-night itinerary] Day 1: High-speed train to Ulanqab → Head straight to Ulan Hada Volcano, climb the wooden boardwalk of Volcano No. 3 to see the red phone booth → Astronaut suit photo op at the foot of Volcano No. 6 → Stay overnight in a starry tent at the foot of the volcano or return to Jining city🌋 Day 2: Wake up early and head to Huitengxile Grassland. At 8:30 AM, take the popular grassland mini-train through the flower sea → At 11:00 AM, find a herdsman's home for horseback riding (cheaper than at the scenic area entrance) → In the evening, watch a small Naadam performance → Stay overnight in a grassland yurt to see the Milky Way🌌 Day 3: After watching the grassland sunrise → Hike in Sumushan Forest Park to the observation deck for a panoramic view of the cloud sea at the border of Shanxi and Inner Mongolia → Descend the mountain and return to Jining district Day 4: Ulanqab Museum (see the Northern Wei gilded Buddha statues) → Shop for a Mongolian robe as a souvenir at Jining International Leather City → Eat lamb shaomai with brick tea at Lianying Shaomai Restaurant → Return with smoked chicken and beef jerky🛤️ The entire trip can be done for CNY 800 to 1,200 per person. Carpooling + staying in a yurt during off-peak times offers the best value. Ulanqab in August, with grasslands on one side and volcanoes on the other, the Milky Way above and cattle and sheep below, is truly a rare and magical place. Just go for it💃!

7.4 live from Ulanqab, it’s truly overwhelming

July in Ulanqab! Walking through waist-high meadows while enjoying hand-held lamb, the wind turbines and the blue-purple sunset glow hit so hard that every time I see a grassland video, I howl😭✨ Who gets it, family! July in Ulanqab is nothing like the online cliché “wind blowing low grass revealing cattle and sheep” assembly-line attraction. Golden lotus flowers cover the green carpet like a shower of gold. The wind turbines spin, blowing cool air up my collar. Back in Beijing, I run the AC for a week but still feel like my nose is missing the scent of meadows mixed with sheep’s milk. The aftereffect is so strong that when I close my eyes at night, I still see the purple-pink sunset spreading across the grassland horizon! · ----- 🔥 6 grassland secret spots that make you stomp with joy ▪️ Huitengxile Huanghua Valley bottom · secret flower spot in Fengzuangou 🌻 Huge boulders at the valley bottom are embedded in waist-high golden lotus flowers.
