Want to eat like a local? Don't miss out on these top Getaria dishes and foodie spots.

A perfect day in the Basque Country requires two things: ocean views and fine local wine. Combining a visit to the historic coastal town of Getaria with a mountain winery tour offers a complete feel for the region's unique atmosphere. ⚓ The Historic Port of Getaria The journey begins in Getaria, a small fishing village with a grand history. It is the birthplace of iconic fashion designer Cristóbal Balenciaga and the legendary explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano — the man who completed Magellan’s historic circumnavigation of the globe. Today, the town is famous for its thriving anchovy industry. Free parking is readily available right by the pier, offering easy access to the beautiful Gothic architecture of the Church of San Salvador. Heavy rain and thick fog often shroud the streets, creating a distinctly moody and cinematic coastal backdrop. 🥂 Tasting Wine Above the Clouds A short drive up the mountain leads directly to Bodega Txomin Etxaniz, the largest producer of local Txakoli wine. Txakoli is a young white wine — fresh, slightly acidic, and delightfully easy to drink. The wine tasting offers fantastic value: for just a bit more than €20, visitors enjoy three generous pours paired with delicious local fish appetizers. Wine enthusiasts frequently fill the tasting room, creating a lively and welcoming atmosphere. 🍋 Fog, Donkeys, and Giant Lemons Thick Basque fog initially blends the sea and sky into a solid white wall, but post-tasting views often reward visitors as the weather clears. The winery terrace opens up to sweeping panoramas of the bay, surrounding lush green grounds filled with friendly local donkeys, and giant, bright lemons thriving in the rainy climate. 💡 Local Tip: Txakoli is best enjoyed young. Travelers visiting in 2026 should look for the 2025 vintage to experience that perfect, fresh flavor profile. #西班牙 #西班牙旅行 #travel2026 #travel #couplestrip #naturalwonders #thingstodo #spain #spaintravel #basquecountry #getaria #txakoli #wine #winery #spanishfood

Spain has San Sebastián and Bilbao. But between them lies a village that distills the Basque Country into a few perfect streets. Getaria is a fishing port of stone houses, narrow lanes, and a harbor filled with colorful boats. The vineyards rise behind the village. The sea stretches before it. Here is how to explore this coastal gem and save money with Trip.com. 1. The Harbor at Dawn: Boats and Silence Getaria's harbor is the heart of the village. By 9 AM, the fish market is done and the cafés fill. Come at 6:30 AM instead. The boats bob in the water. The gulls circle. The light is soft on the stone walls. You will walk along the quay with only the sound of the sea and the creak of ropes. It feels like the Basque Country of a century ago. Pro Tip: Download the Trip.com offline map for Getaria. It shows you the hidden stairways and the quietest routes up to the vineyards. The best photos are from the walkway above the harbor, where the boats and the bay stretch out below. 2. San Salvador Church: A Gothic Ship on Land The Church of San Salvador dominates the village with its massive stone walls and asymmetric tower. Built in the 14th century, it looks like a ship turned to stone. Inside, the wooden galleries and vaulted ceilings are atmospheric. Come in the afternoon. The light filters through the narrow windows, and the silence is deep. Money Hack: The church is free to enter. Skip the guided tours unless you want the historical context. Walk up the hill behind the church for a view over the rooftops and the sea. Check Trip.com for a "Getaria Walking Tour" that includes the church and the Balenciaga Museum. 3. The Balenciaga Museum: A Tribute to a Native Son Getaria is the birthplace of Cristóbal Balenciaga, one of the most influential fashion designers of the 20th century. The museum dedicated to his work is a modern building perched on the hillside. The exhibits are stunning — dresses that look like sculpture, fabrics that seem to float. Even if fashion is not your interest, the building and the views are worth the visit. Budget Advice: The museum has an entrance fee, but it is free on certain days. Check Trip.com for a combined ticket that includes the museum and a wine tasting. The Getaria wine region produces the famous Txakoli, a slightly sparkling white wine that pairs perfectly with seafood. 4. Food That Tastes Like the Sea Getaria is famous for its grilled fish. Try Rodaballo — turbot grilled over charcoal, a local specialty. Order Txakoli — the local white wine, poured from a height to aerate it. And do not miss Gilda — the Basque pintxo of anchovy, olive, and pepper. Where to Eat: Skip the touristy restaurants on the harbor. Walk into the old town and find Kaia-Kaipe or Elkano, where locals and connoisseurs eat. Elkano is world-famous, but the prices are lower at lunch. Check Trip.com for set menu deals — some places include a glass of Txakoli when you book through the app. Where to Stay? Book on Trip.com a guesthouse in the old town. Look for something near the harbor or the church. You will sleep in a stone house with wooden beams, a small balcony, and the sound of the sea at night. The evenings are quiet after the day-trippers leave, and the mornings are magical. Conclusion: Getaria is not a place that tries to impress you. It simply is. It is a village of stone and sea, of wine and grilled fish. It is a place where the Basque soul is alive in every corner. Spain is a country of vibrant culture, but Getaria is its salty heart. Come and sit by the harbor. The sea is waiting. #trip_com #Spain #Getaria #getariatravel #BasqueCountry #SpainHiddenGems #Txakoli #BudgetTravel #EuropeGuide #traveleurope #BasqueCuisine #FishingVillage #BalenciagaMuseum #BasqueCoast #GrilledFish

Just a 30-minute drive from San Sebastián lies Getaria, a small port town where the sea and history intertwine. Strolling down the cobblestone alleys, my first stop for pintxos was "Xagu". The beautiful plates lined up on the counter and the laid-back flow of Basque time instantly put my mind at ease. Afterward, I headed to the Balenciaga Museum. Experiencing the aesthetics and innovation of Cristóbal Balenciaga in the very town where he was born and raised was a truly luxurious moment. To top off the trip, I visited "Iribar Jatetxea". Savoring their famous turbot right by the ocean, I experienced the true power of simple ingredients and the profound depth of Basque cuisine. Getaria perfectly encapsulates stunning scenery, exquisite gastronomy, and sophisticated culture. It's an absolute hidden gem and a highly recommended side trip during your stay in San Sebastián. ✨🌊🍷

A Pilgrimage to the Spanish Atlantic Coast – Gipuzkoa Region A highly recommended winery visit, with a friendly welcome and a very inspiring explanation of the process from harvest to bottling of delicious wines. Tuna, anchovies, and bread were served during the tasting. The rosé and white wines were delicious! I immediately grabbed several bottles. Besides the wonderful wines, the cellar views were breathtaking. In fact, this winery was the first in the region to begin producing Técole. Highly recommended! #SeptemberDestinations2025 #BiscayAttractions #SpainTravel

Spanish Atlantic Coast Pilgrimage Journey ~ Gipuzkoa Region This beautiful trail connects the towns of Getaria and Zarautz along the coastline. It is a 5-kilometer walking route that is relatively flat and not too long, making it an ideal way to exercise while enjoying breathtaking views and the soothing sound of ocean waves. The trail offers incredible scenery, numerous viewpoints, and benches where you can rest along the way. I highly recommend completing the entire route.

Pilgrimage Along Spain's Atlantic Coast ~ Gipuzkoa Region The Church of San Salvador, located in the heart of Getaria, is a quintessential example of Basque Gothic architecture. Its history dates back to the 14th century, though the main structure was built between the 16th and 18th centuries. The church's majestic silhouette rises impressively, embodying centuries of history and devout faith. Upon entering, you'll be captivated by its rich artistic details: the striking main altarpiece with its intricate depictions of biblical scenes, and the ancient baptismal font that stands out as a highlight. Don't miss its unique ribbed vaults and architectural elements, which make it a true gem of Basque cultural heritage. For history and art enthusiasts exploring this picturesque seaside town, the Church of San Salvador is an absolute must-visit. In 1936, the church was declared a National Historic-Artistic Monument, further cementing its significance.
I spent a few hours admiring the Comb of the Wind/El Peine del Viento by Eduardo Chillida, and it was such a treat! There were lots of people around taking photos and kids playing, which made it such a lively and happy place. If you love capturing your experiences on IG, this is the perfect spot for you!
LilPThis is a very beautiful beach in San Sebastian. The entire beach is very large and has soft sand. Many tourists come here to sunbathe or participate in water tours. It is very lively, so don't miss it.
乖小咪Alderdi Eder parkea is a pleasant urban park and leisure area situated south of Old Town and northeast of La Concha Beach. The park is filled with palm trees, other interesting tree species and nicely landscaped flowerbeds. There are walking paths, park benches, a merry-go-round and other light entertainment for the little ones. You can see the historic City Hall building and walk along the promenade enjoying views of the sea and beach nearby at Alderdi Eder Parkea. Overall, this is a nice spot if you are looking for green space or leisure grounds while in San Sebastian. Note that there is not much shade anywhere in the park so bring a hat and apply sunscreen if you plan to spend much time here.
UnROThis was perhaps the most disappointing place we visited in San Sebastian. From the very first minute, it felt like they were trying to make money on literally everything. First, you have to pay to enter the grounds—3 euros per person, not per car. Then, almost all the attractions are paid separately, there are huge lines everywhere, and even the toilets are paid. All day, we never felt like the cost was worth it. On the contrary, it seemed like they were simply trying to extract as much from visitors as possible. The complex itself didn't particularly impress us. There are much more interesting places with beautiful views and entertainment where you don't have to pay for every step. Personally, I don't recommend wasting your time or money on this place. In my opinion, it's more focused on making money off tourists than providing them with a truly enjoyable experience.
