How to Explore New Zealand’s North Island Middle-earth + South Island in One Guide! — traveler post in Hamilton

How to Explore New Zealand’s North Island Middle-earth + South Island in One Guide!

Want to visit New Zealand but don’t know how to plan your trip? I just got back from there—North Island is magical, South Island is pure and pristine. This route connects Hobbiton, the Glowworm Caves, snowy mountains and lakes, and starry hot springs— all must-visit places on my bucket list! . ✨【North Island | Step into the movies, soak in geothermal springs】 🎬 Hobbiton Just like in The Lord of the Rings! 44 hobbit holes, the Green Dragon Inn, the mill... every detail perfectly recreated. 🌋 Rotorua The town smells of sulfur with active geothermal activity! At night, you must soak in the Polynesian Spa, facing Lake Rotorua, with steaming hot water that’s incredibly relaxing. Especially enjoyable in winter. 🪶 Maori Cultural Village Watch war dance performances, geothermal geysers, and bubbling mud pools. The Maori people are super warm and the atmosphere is electrifying. ✨ Waitomo Glowworm Caves Take a quiet boat ride into the pitch-black caves, with thousands of blue-green glowworms overhead, like an upside-down galaxy. No talking or photos allowed, but the awe is unforgettable. Kids will be wide-eyed in disbelief. . 🏔️【South Island | Snowy mountains, lakes + adrenaline rush】 🚠 Queenstown The “Adventure Capital”! Home of the original Kawarau Bridge bungee jump, plus skydiving, luge... If you’re not daring, just take the Skyline Gondola to the top for panoramic views of Lake Wakatipu and the mountains, and enjoy a coffee. 🚢 TSS Earnslaw Steamship A century-old vintage steamship. Cruise to Walter Peak Station to watch sheep shearing and sheepdog herding, then enjoy a lakeside BBQ lunch. Vintage and soothing. 📸 Arrowtown + Wanaka Arrowtown is a fairy-tale gold rush town, beautiful in autumn and peaceful year-round. Wanaka’s famous “lone tree” stands in the lake, framed by snowy mountains and morning mist. 🌌 Lake Tekapo + Church of the Good Shepherd The lake’s milky blue color comes from glacial flour, set against the Southern Alps. It’s an official “International Dark Sky Reserve,” where you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye. At night, visit the Mt. John Observatory to view star clusters through professional telescopes. 🚁 Aoraki Mount Cook National Park Lake Pukaki’s “Tiffany Blue.” Then take a helicopter onto the glacier! Land beside a blue ice cave, standing on millennia-old snow. 🏙️ Christchurch A peaceful garden city. Go punting on the Avon River; visit the Cardboard Cathedral made from cardboard tubes, full of stories. . 🗓️【8-Day Itinerary Overview】 D1 Arrive in Auckland, airport pickup, free activities D2 Auckland → Hamilton → Hobbiton → Lake Rotorua → Polynesian Spa D3 Maori Cultural Village → Waitomo Glowworm Caves → Auckland D4 Fly Auckland to Queenstown, free activities (Skyline Gondola/luge/bungee/skydiving) D5 TSS Earnslaw Steamship + Walter Peak Station BBQ → Glenorchy D6 Queenstown → Arrowtown → Wanaka Lone Tree → Lake Tekapo → Church of the Good Shepherd → Stargazing at Mt. Waitomo Glowworm Caves: The Subterranean Galaxy | New Zealand — traveler post in Hamilton

Waitomo Glowworm Caves: The Subterranean Galaxy | New Zealand

✨ Waitomo Glowworm Caves: The Subterranean Galaxy | New Zealand 🇳🇿 It's hard to believe that deep beneath the earth's surface lies a place as breathtaking as a night sky filled with stars! Welcome to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves, a renowned limestone wonder on New Zealand’s North Island. Here, thousands of tiny blue lights twinkle across the cavern ceiling, creating a hidden underground galaxy. 🌌 This natural phenomenon is caused by tiny creatures known as Glowworms. These are actually the larvae of a specific insect species, scientific name Arachnocampa luminosa, which emit a bioluminescent blue glow to lure prey into their hanging sticky threads. 🚣 Highlights You Can't Miss The most popular activity is a silent boat ride along the subterranean river, drifting under a canopy of countless glowing lights. The serene, pitch-black atmosphere paired with the surreal beauty makes this an experience unlike any other cave tour. Beyond the main cave, you'll find Ruakuri Cave, famous for its dramatic spiral entrance, impressive stalactites and stalagmites, and scenic underground walking paths. 📍 Best Time to Visit You can visit all year round! Since the glowworms live deep within the caves, they can be seen in any season, so there's no need to wait for a specific time of year. 🚗 Getting There · From Auckland: Approximately a 2.5-hour drive (about 202 km). · From Hamilton: Approximately a 1-hour drive. · Options: You can rent a car for a road trip or join an organized day tour from Auckland. 🎫 Travel Planning Tips · The main cave is open daily, with tours running from roughly 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. · The main cave tour takes about 45 minutes. · Booking in advance is highly recommended as tour sizes are limited. · Photography and videography are strictly prohibited inside the main cave, but Ruakuri Cave allows photos in specific areas as directed by your guide. · Wear comfortable, non-slip walking shoes. ❤️ The Waitomo Glowworm Caves are a truly incredible natural marvel. Sometimes, you don't have to travel to outer space to see the stars—there’s a stunning sky hidden right beneath our feet. 🌌

Canada's Downton Abbey: The story of Queen Camilla's great-grandmother's mansion — traveler post in Hamilton

Canada's Downton Abbey: The story of Queen Camilla's great-grandmother's mansion

You must have seen "Downton Abbey," right? Today, I'm taking you to see Canada's own Downton Abbey—a mansion built over 100 years ago by a former Canadian prime minister. Dundurn Castle is one of the iconic historical landmarks in Hamilton, Canada. It was once the luxurious residence of Sir Allan Napier MacNab (1798–1862), a former prime minister of Canada, and is designated as a National Historic Site of Canada. Sir Allan Napier MacNab was born in 1798 in the town of Niagara-on-the-Lake. He was known as a "little hero" for his bravery during the War of 1812. He began his career as a lawyer in 1826, the same year his wife passed away, leaving him to raise their two children, Robert and Anne, on his own. MacNab remarried in 1831, and his second wife gave birth to Sophia and Minnie. Many people don't know that Sophia was the great-grandmother of Camilla, the Queen Consort of the current British King, Charles. Figure 9 shows a portrait of Sophia as a child, which is preserved inside Dundurn Castle. In 1837, MacNab supported the loyalist cause during the Upper Canada Rebellion and was knighted by Queen Victoria for his service. He represented the Hamilton region in the Canadian Parliament for over 30 years, helping to establish local railways and banks, and had a profound influence on both politics and the economy. At the time, Dundurn Castle cost 175,000 Canadian dollars to build (worth approximately 39 million Canadian dollars today) and has an interior area of 18,000 square feet. The castle has three floors with over 40 exquisite rooms; MacNab and his family lived upstairs, while the servants lived downstairs. Figure 4 shows the Coach House, which was the equivalent of a private garage back then. The tour guide in Figure 8 is dressed in 19th-century attire and is well-versed in every detail and anecdote about the castle. The estate includes not only the castle itself but also vegetable gardens, lawns, and outbuildings, making it truly one of the most beautiful historical buildings in Ontario. The scenery here is stunning, facing Lake Ontario and surrounded by dense forests—perfect for when the maple leaves are turning red. A trip to the castle is sure to evoke a sense of nostalgia, so if you have time, why not go and experience it for yourself? The address for Dundurn Castle is 610 York Blvd, Hamilton, Ontario L8R 3H1, Canada. The castle offers free parking, and the museum is open year-round (Tuesday to Sunday, 12:00 PM to 4:00 PM).

Hamilton Gardens

If you are passing by, I still recommend it. It condenses vegetation and architecture from different parts of the world into 20 small gardens with their own characteristics. It takes about an hour to wander around. The ticket office is at the gate. It costs 20 NZD per person.

Hobbiton™ Movie Set Tours

While the meticulous set design, the stunning Waikato rolling hills, and finishing up with a drink at the Green Dragon Inn provide a genuinely charming afternoon, the ticket price and time commitment can certainly feel steep if you aren't emotionally invested in J.R.R. Tolkien's universe or Peter Jackson's films. For die-hard fans, it's an unforgettable pilgrimage, but for casual sightseers, New Zealand offers plenty of incredible natural landscapes that require no prior fandom to appreciate.
