Ready for calm countryside vibes and big adventures? I spent a dreamy day in Havelte, the Dutch village famous for its ancient hunebedden (stone tombs), wild heath landscapes, and super chill atmosphere 🌳🪨
Top Spots to Visit in Havelte:
🪨 Hunebed D53 & D54 (Hunebedweg, open 24/7): These massive stone monuments are over 5,000 years old – walk right up and feel the prehistoric energy!
🌾 Holtingerveld Nature Reserve (Hoofdweg 52, sunrise–sunset): Hiking trails twist through heath, pine forests, and sand dunes—bring comfy shoes and a reusable water bottle.
☕ De Pannenkoekenbakkers Havelte (Van Helomaweg 12, 10am–9pm): After exploring, hit this cozy pancake spot for Dutch-style pancakes loaded with sweet or savory toppings.
My top tip? If you come in summer, start early—the light on the stones is magical and you get the trails mostly to yourself. I loved carrying snacks and a picnic for the nature reserve, plus the local bakery by the main street was super affordable for takeaway treats.
Getting Around:
Havelte doesn’t have a train station, so hop off at Meppel or Steenwijk, then grab bus 36/37, or rent a bike for max flexibility 🚴♂️.
Destination Hacks:
Cash is rarely needed—cards are accepted almost everywhere, but bring coins for public toilets! Weather can change fast, so pack layers and a light rain jacket. No visa needed for EU residents.
