I based in Myoko-Kogen (¥9,000/night pension), took the morning bus to Lake Nojiri (¥500, 20 min), walked the west ridge trail up toward Sekkei-sawa. The cliff moss is the cedar ridge: Hylocomium and Sphagnum in the plantation drainage where the old-growth remnant survives, Fissidens on the basalt outcrop above the lake's north shore, and the cliff below the Myoko ski lift has Metzgeria on the seep—the lake is ringed by red pine and the moss glows at dawn. I walked the 3 km ridge at 06:00 in July, the lake below flat, Mt. Myoko's cone still snow-streaked, a Japanese serow crossing 100 m off (rare, froze). No facilities at the trailhead—carry water, the ridge has none. Mistake: I came in November and the bus to Nojiri ran once a day—Apr–Oct 4–5 times, winter 1. Another: I wore sneakers on the cedar-root section and slipped; the ridge is root-ladder, boots with grip. The heavy snow made traveling to many spots difficult, which meant we missed out on a lot of places we really wanted to see. 🌿 This time, we decided to plan a new trip when the snow isn't as heavy, the weather is pleasant, and getting around is much easier. We finally get to fully explore the spots we missed last time! I’d like to share this interesting 2-day, 1-night itinerary for anyone looking for a quick getaway in Niigata. 📍 DAY 1: Yahiko – Teradomari – Onsen Start your morning at Yahiko Shrine, one of the oldest and most renowned shrines in Niigata Prefecture. The lush, peaceful atmosphere makes it the perfect place for a stroll to experience traditional Japan. Around noon, head over to Teradomari Fish Market, a famous market right along the Sea of Japan. It’s well-known for its fresh seafood, offering everything from sashimi and giant crabs to grilled scallops and more, all at very wallet-friendly prices. In the evening, check into your accommodation in the Yahiko Onsen area. It consists of 7 zones that take advantage of nature, and you can enjoy a wide range of things from children's playgrounds to adults' walks. Main attractions and facilities Very popular "Holiday Square Zone": There is a large lawn square with a fountain, and it is an area where small children can enjoy water play and picnics to their heart's content. Fountains are usually open from late April to late October (10:00-16:30).

It is only about a 10-minute walk from Joetsu Myoko Station, making it very convenient to reach. This was once a large settlement site from the Yayoi period to the Kofun period in ancient Japan. Because a large number of residential remains, shell mounds, tombs and artifacts were discovered, it was considered an important local stronghold at the time. The ruins area is now very tidy, with a wide rural landscape and trails. There are also stone tablets and explanation signs for the "Kagai Ruins" on site. It is a quiet spot where you can take a walk and learn about local history. Standing in the fields and overlooking Myoko Mountain, it is also interesting to feel the ancient people's site selection and living space.
