From Norrbotten to the Gulf of Bothnia: A trip to Luleå in early winter — traveler post in Lulea

From Norrbotten to the Gulf of Bothnia: A trip to Luleå in early winter

Luleå, the cold creeps in from the unfrozen sea I landed in Norrbotten in the evening. Luleå is the capital of Norrbotten County in Sweden, located on the northern shore of the Gulf of Bothnia. Given its latitude, it's not far from the Arctic Circle. Entering November, the sun rises late and sets early. The days are short, the sky is often gray, and the clouds hang low, with only a few hours of daylight. As soon as I stepped out of the terminal, the cold crept in from the sea. The wind was damp and tightened the skin on my face. At this time of year, the city has entered early winter. There is occasional thin ice on the roadside, and pedestrians are bundled up tightly, with no one wanting to stand outside for long. The first real snow and how deep it will accumulate depends on how cold it gets after winter begins, so don't set your expectations for a snowy landscape too high before you leave. Wooden cabins surrounding a stone church Gammelstad Church Town, about 10 km from the city, is a must-visit stop in Luleå. It is a World Heritage site, where a cluster of reddish-brown wooden cabins spreads out around a stone church, with hundreds of houses lined up, leaving narrow alleys in between. These cabins were originally used for overnight stays by villagers who traveled from afar for worship. In the north, the roads were long and the winters cold. If they couldn't return home the same day after worship, they built houses at the foot of the church, which gradually formed a village over the years. The stone church in the center is even older, a historic church in the area with thick walls and a heavy roof, open year-round. The alleys are quiet now, the wooden walls bearing the colors of time. In winter, frost hangs from the eaves, and the snow crunches underfoot. A stroll through the alleys reveals the rhythm of life in a northern town. Some houses are only for viewing in winter; just ask at the door if you can enter. Ice roads on the frozen sea Luleå faces the Gulf of Bothnia, which spreads out before the city, dotted with islands. There are many islands in the archipelago, offering plenty of places to catch your breath. The city's port relies on the sea for its livelihood. When the sea freezes in winter and the ice is thick enough, the locals open ice roads on the surface, connecting the city to nearby islands so cars can drive across. When these ice roads open and which islands they reach varies from year to year, depending entirely on how cold the previous winter was and how solid the ice is. In winter, the port relies on icebreakers to clear shipping lanes so cargo ships can enter. Ice conditions are something the city keeps a close eye on after winter begins. In November, the sea is usually not frozen through, and it's usually later before you can actually get on the ice. If you want to take an ice road, listen to local advice on ice conditions first. Don't try to test it yourself. The water depth varies, and there are currents under the ice. It may look white, but it's not necessarily solid. Long nights, cozy in the city In Luleå, winter days are short. It gets dark shortly after noon, lights are turned on one by one in the houses, and windows are covered with frost. Winter nights are long in this region. If you catch a clear night when it's pitch black, you might see the Northern Lights, though the aurora depends on the sky, and no one can say for sure which night it will appear. The city has a museum that tells the history of this area, from hunting and fishing to iron mining, as well as the old customs of the Sami people. Spending an hour or two inside is a great way to escape the cold outside. There is also an old church with a spire in the city, located by the river. Visiting it in winter, the tower stands out against the gray sky. Dinner usually consists of food related to the sea and the land. Stewed fish, stewed meat, and bread are served, and the warmth is just what you need to slowly recover. Spending winter in Luleå, there are some things locals learn from childhood. When parking a car outside, you first plug it into an outlet to warm up the engine so it will start. Tires are changed to studded ones for better grip on the ice. The main street in the city is not long, and snowplows clear it at night, so the road is clean by daybreak. Shops and small restaurants line this street. When it's cold, people are willing to gather in warm places to eat something hot before leaving. The sun sets early, but there's no rush; sitting indoors is also part of how locals spend the winter. When meeting, small talk often starts with the weather. The cold is a topic everyone can relate to. The next morning, I pulled back the curtains, and the glass was covered in frost patterns. The waterline on the shore was still clear and unfrozen. The sea was not far away, quietly waiting for colder days. The streetlights were still on, and the snow particles were as fine as flour, landing on my shoulders and brushing off with a tap.

[Luleå] A city in the north of Sweden — traveler post in Lulea

[Luleå] A city in the north of Sweden

Luleå is a northern Swedish city that can be reached in about an hour by plane from Stockholm! Further north in Sweden, there is a famous town called Kiruna where you can see the Northern Lights. But you can also see the Northern Lights in Luleå if the weather is good, and there are plenty of places to shop and have lunch! There are chain stores such as McDonald's and Espresso Coffee, as well as movie theaters, so you can enjoy the daytime too! ︎ Personally, I laughed at how many sushi restaurants there were! There are many "SUSHI bars" in Sweden, but I feel like there were especially many in Luleå lol And one thing I would like you to experience in Luleå is riding on the frozen sea! ︎ There are many lakes you can ride on in both Japan and Sweden, but I heard that it is rare for the sea to freeze! The huge ice rink will get you excited! There is also a World Heritage city on the outskirts, so be sure to check it out~♪
