UK Northumberland: Simonside Hills to Rothbury WWII Tank Training Ground Track — traveler post in Morpeth

UK Northumberland: Simonside Hills to Rothbury WWII Tank Training Ground Track

#worthitornot Simonside, south of Rothbury, is usually sold as a family forest walk with red squirrel sightings. I went for the southern spur down toward Rothbury where the Ministry of Supply ran a WWII tank training ground on the heath. Parked at Simonside Car Park (£2 coins or RingGo, no signal for app—download ticket offline), climbed the main path to Simonside summit (267 m, 40 min) for the Coquetdale view, then took the less-marked southeast descent through mature pine into open bilberry moor. After about 3 km the ground changes: crushed stone spreads, parallel ruts 2 m apart run for 200 m, and a rusted track-plate half-buried in moss marks where Churchill tanks turned. No info board. This is not on the official OS map as "tank range"—you find it by knowing the grid square. Rothbury below has a Co-op, a couple of cafés, and the 14:20 bus back to Newcastle if you don't retrace (I retraced; 11 km total, 3h30). Weather flipped twice—sun, then hill fog, then sun—typical Simonside microclimate; pack both sunglasses and a shell. Mistake: I wore road trainers, and the crushed shale on the tank track shredded the sidewall grip. A local in Rothbury told me the range was active 1941–45 and they still plough up brass cases in spring ploughing. Discussion: should these scarred moors be interpreted with signage, or is the silence and guesswork part of why it's worth it?

Top-Notch Northumberland Guide: Highly Recommended — traveler post in Morpeth

Top-Notch Northumberland Guide: Highly Recommended

Alex Iles is your perfect guide for Northumberland. He worked with me for months while I organized my trip, showing incredible patience as I kept changing my plans. We spent three amazing days together, and his knowledge of the area's history, buildings, and ruins is unparalleled. We visited Alnwick Castle, Warkworth Castle, Lindisfarne Priory and Museum, Bamburgh Castle, and Hadrian’s Wall. Lunch was included, and he always ensured our comfort. Since I have walking difficulties, he was exceptionally considerate, often offering his hand or arm on stairs. I only wish he covered all of the UK!

Northumberland Zoo 🐘 — traveler post in Morpeth

Northumberland Zoo 🐘

#2024wish Just came back from an amazing day at Northumberland Zoo, and it was a blast! 🐾🦁🐵 Located in Warkworth, Northumberland, England, the entrance fee was around $20 for adults, which is quite reasonable, and they offer discounts for kids, making it perfect for families. The zoo might be smaller compared to some others, but it's big on charm and personality. The enclosures are well-designed, and the animals seemed well-cared for. From majestic big cats to cheeky monkeys and colorful birds, there's plenty to see. 🐅🐒🦜 One highlight was the lemur walkthrough – being surrounded by these playful creatures was such a unique experience! 🌿 They also have a nice café serving up snacks and drinks, and a playground to keep the little ones entertained. Nearby attractions include Warkworth Castle for history buffs and the stunning Northumberland coastline for scenic walks. Overall, Northumberland Zoo offers a fun day out for animal lovers of all ages! #NorthumberlandZoo #FamilyFun #WildlifeAdventure 🌳🐾
