Tucked away in the southeast, continuing the midsummer vibe — traveler post in Nan'an

Tucked away in the southeast, continuing the midsummer vibe

Taking a break from the fast-paced commute in Shanghai, I spent three days living like a local in this city that is "half bustling life, half ethereal charm." Follow this straightforward itinerary for food and fun—just copy and paste it! 👇 Day 1: A carb carnival on West Street, time to eat and explore 🦆 Head straight to West Street on day one! The freshly made ginger duck is glistening and rich, with ginger slices fried to a crisp, and the aroma fills the entire street. Grab a cup of sweet, refreshing winter melon tea to balance it out. Then, take on the hardcore challenge of the legendary "Minnan dark cuisine"—sipunculid worm jelly. It's cool and chewy, and so fresh it'll blow your mind! On the way, pick up some freshly baked taro cakes and scallion pancakes; every bite is fragrant. I was completely conquered by the carb-filled joy of this place on the very first day. Day 2: Visiting the prototype of Wukong and old times in ancient houses 🐒 Head straight to Kaiyuan Temple in the morning for a pilgrimage. Not only was I stunned by the rustic beauty of the East and West Pagodas, but I also went straight to the East Pagoda to snap a photo at the same spot featured in "Black Myth: Wukong"! Don't miss the famous stone carving of the Monkey Pilgrim at the West Pagoda (this is the prototype for the Great Sage). Looking at the weathered stone carvings, the sense of mythical destiny is instantly palpable. In the afternoon, head to Wulin Ancient Village. Wandering through the sea of red-brick ancient houses and mottled overseas Chinese letter museums, it feels like traveling back to the era of sailing to Southeast Asia. Every photo looks like a vintage Nanyang blockbuster. After a long day of walking, warm your stomach with a bowl of hot vermicelli paste in the evening, plus a hardcore "gout-inducing" seafood hot pot—so much seafood you'll need help walking out! Day 3: The romance of the sea-sky Buddha land and the ultimate local faith 🌊 Wake up early to see the Luojia Temple on the sea. The yellow temple stands on the reefs, and the sound of the waves is incredibly healing—this is the true sea-sky Buddha land. Afterward, head to the Tonghuai Guanyue Temple, the most popular temple in Quanzhou. Watching the curling incense smoke and the devotees casting moon blocks, you will truly understand the human touch of this city. Save the final meal before departure for a rich and mellow satay hot pot, and order a side of crispy-on-the-outside, soft-on-the-inside vegetable cakes. Dip them in sweet chili sauce for a divine bite. Finally, board the high-speed train back to Shanghai, feeling completely satisfied in both heart and stomach!

Pullman Quanzhou, a fun-filled family trip!

Over the weekend, I took my little one to Quanzhou to experience the unique charm of the "Stone Capital." We not only enjoyed the local culture but also stayed at an amazing hotel—the Pullman Quanzhou Shuitou Hotel. This trip helped us relax and strengthened the bond between mother and child. Today, let me share this unforgettable family travel story!🌟 🏊‍♀️ joyful moments at the family pool 💦 As soon as we entered the hotel’s indoor pool, we were drawn to the crystal-clear water and spacious area. My little one couldn’t wait to jump in, splashing with pure joy. The pool’s thoughtful design includes a shallow area perfect for kids and a deep end for adults. Watching my child swim freely, I felt a glimpse of the endless possibilities ahead.🌊 🏡 warm and cozy family-themed room 🏠 We chose a family-themed room, and right at the door, the playful decorations caught our eyes. The room featured cartoon patterns kids love and was equipped with child-friendly amenities like a kids’ bathrobe, small pillows, and even children’s toiletries. My little one was thrilled to see all these, and the happiness of the trip started from that moment.😊 🍽️ a feast for the taste buds 🍽️ The hotel restaurant offered a wide variety of dishes, including authentic Fujian and Cantonese specialties as well as international cuisine. The breakfast was especially impressive, with fresh fruit, steaming porridge, and an assortment of Western breads and desserts. My child’s favorite was the hotel’s homemade juice—natural and refreshing, every sip tasted like happiness.🍹 🌳 exploring the nature and culture nearby 🌳 Beyond the hotel’s facilities, the surrounding area was worth exploring. The hotel is close to the famous Anping Bridge, an ancient stone bridge that has witnessed countless historical changes. Standing on the bridge, you can feel its peaceful and timeless atmosphere. Seeking Zen in the mountains and forests, cleansing the heart by climbing high

A journey to embrace Zen has always been a dual nourishment for both body and mind. On this trip to southern Fujian, I chose Jinjiang Quanduo Hotel as my home base, heading to Xuefeng Temple in Nan’an to trace a thousand years of Zen history. Seamlessly switching between urban convenience and mountain tranquility, I entrusted the hotel’s gentle comfort with my fatigue and the ancient temple’s serene Zen melodies with my restlessness and noise, creating a leisurely and healing slow-paced time. Staying here is the most reassuring start to this Zen journey. The hotel is located in the heart of Jinjiang, offering a quiet retreat amid the bustling city while enjoying convenient transportation, saving much travel hassle on the way to Nan’an Xuefeng Temple. Upon entering the hotel, you are enveloped in a warm and elegant atmosphere, with soft warm-toned lighting that is gentle on the eyes. The minimalist and grand decor combines texture and comfort without clutter, perfectly reflecting the calm and peaceful mood of a Zen journey. The guest rooms are spacious and bright, with thoughtful details everywhere. The clean and tidy bathroom features a considerate wet-dry separation design, fully equipped toiletries, bringing the convenience and comfort of home. By the window, a cozy corner invites quiet rest or emptying the mind. Without rushing anywhere, you can find a moment of peace in this little world, gathering energy for the next day’s mountain climb and Zen search. The hotel’s attentive service adds warmth, with a 24-hour front desk always ready, comprehensive facilities, and a rich self-service breakfast including porridge, noodles, snacks, refreshing side dishes, hot drinks, and fresh fruit. Enjoying a warm and nutritious breakfast in the morning awakens the body and mind, setting off with ease and comfort toward Nan’an Xuefeng Temple. Departing from Jinjiang Quanduo Hotel, the drive to Nan’an Xuefeng Temple reveals changing scenery. The city’s hustle gradually fades, replaced by the fresh mountain air. Reaching the foot of Yangmei Mountain, lush greenery layers the landscape, refreshing the soul. The mountain breeze carries the scent of grass and trees; even before entering the ancient temple, the heart is already calm. Slowly ascending the winding mountain road, the path is secluded and peaceful, with birdsong echoing in the quiet mountains. Far from the noisy traffic of the world, only the sounds of wind and birds remain, bringing a peaceful and serene state of mind. Nan’an Xuefeng Temple, a thousand-year-old ancient temple hidden deep in Yangmei Mountain, was founded during the Tang Dynasty. Known as the “Pearl of the Buddhist Kingdom in Southern Fujian,” it has withstood the test of time, still preserving its simple and solemn appearance. It is a renowned Zen retreat in southern Fujian. Climbing the steps, the rustic mountain gate stands quietly. Inside, red walls, black tiles, and upturned eaves perfectly blend traditional southern Fujian architecture with Buddhist Zen spirit. There is no strong commercial atmosphere, only tranquility and serenity, instantly letting go of worldly distractions. Within the temple, towering ancient trees form a green canopy. Centuries-old trees stand silently, witnessing the temple’s changes over time. Sunlight filters through the leaves, scattering golden light, peaceful and beautiful. Walking through the temple, incense smoke curls, Buddhist chants float gently, and wind chimes softly ring in the breeze, cleansing the soul. The halls are solemn, the Buddha statues compassionate. Visitors slow their steps and speak softly, feeling the solemnity and kindness of Buddhism in this pure land, sincerely praying for inner peace and smoothness. Following the temple paths upward, the scenery changes with every step, full of Zen spirit. The Clear Heart Spring is crystal clear, its water fresh and sweet. Drinking a sip feels like washing away worldly worries. The Tai Xu Cave is deep and quiet; stepping inside brings cool comfort and a calm mind. The winding path meanders through the woods, with a gentle breeze and surrounding greenery. Every step is unhurried, every breath filled with freshness. From the summit, the mountains stretch endlessly, clouds flow like seas. The grandeur and beauty of southern Fujian’s landscape unfold before your eyes. Looking down, mist swirls among the mountains; in the distance, fields and villages scatter. The vastness of heaven and earth opens the mind. As the ancient temple couplet says, “High in status, the sun and moon pass over the shoulders; with an open courtyard, rivers and mountains are always in hand.” Standing in the mountains, one understands this transcendence and openness. There are no bustling crowds or noisy sounds at Xuefeng Temple, only the tranquility of the mountains and forests, the serenity of the ancient temple, and the enduring Zen spirit. You can sit quietly on the stone steps, listening to the wind through the treetops and the lingering chants, conversing with your inner self. You can stroll along the temple corridors, admiring carved beams and painted rafters, appreciating the vitality of plants, feeling time’s slow flow. Or climb higher, conquering mountain paths, letting go of restlessness during the ascent, and finding release at the summit. Let your body and mind immerse in this Zen landscape, shedding all fatigue and worries. As the sun sets, ending a day of mountain climbing and Zen seeking, you return to Jinjiang Quanduo Hotel with a heart full of peace and calm. After a day in the mountains and forests, though physically tired, the spirit is refreshed, transparent, and serene from the Zen immersion. Back in the cozy room, shedding the dust of travel, lazily leaning on the bed, savoring the temple’s tranquility, the greenery of the mountains, and the lingering chants from the day. The worldly restlessness and worries have long vanished. The hotel’s night is quiet and peaceful, warmer and more comfortable than the mountain’s chill. No need to rush or be busy, just enjoy this comfort and tranquility, slowly cherishing the day’s Zen insights. The warm breakfast in the morning, the ease and convenience of travel, and the comfort of returning home—Quanduo Hotel offers an ultimate lodging experience, perfectly concluding this Zen journey, blending the calm of Zen seeking with the comfort of travel. Stay at Jinjiang Quanduo, climb Nan’an Xuefeng—this journey to embrace Zen is a rest for the body and a cultivation for the soul. At Quanduo Hotel, find stability and comfort in lodging; at Xuefeng Ancient Temple, gain the purity and serenity of Zen. No need to chase time or conform to noise; seek Zen among mountains and waters, find peace in warmth. This is the most touching meaning of a trip to southern Fujian and an unforgettable journey that heals the heart.

Quanzhou string puppet show performance

In the bustling West Street, I quietly watched these three puppet shows. "Little Bald Head Goes Down the Mountain" used strings to depict his endearing appearance, capturing the vibrant life of Quanzhou's ancient city; the hand puppet show "Daming Mansion" was a classic, showcasing masterful acrobatic skills on a small stage; and the string puppet show "Monkey Show" was full of wit and humor, bringing the monkey to life with its silken strings. The two puppet forms performed together, traditional yet vibrant, with captivating singing and drumming creating a powerful atmosphere. In just a few performances, I gained a deeper understanding of the craftsmanship of both string puppetry and glove puppetry—a truly worthwhile experience.

The venue was clean and elegant, with a charming Minnan-style tea room that created a wonderful atmosphere for enjoying tea and watching the show. The performers' skills with string puppets and hand puppets were solid. Each of the three plays was unique, with expressive and lively movements and engaging dialogue, showcasing the charm of intangible cultural heritage to the fullest. The performance was well-paced and of a suitable length, captivating both adults and children, allowing them to experience the unique charm of traditional Minnan culture up close. The service was attentive and thoughtful, the overall process was smooth, and the immersive experience was excellent. If you're visiting Quanzhou West Street, this puppet show is definitely worth considering. It's a relaxing and enjoyable way to experience the wonders of intangible cultural heritage firsthand. Qingyuan Mountain

Quanzhou's 5A-level scenic area is very close to the city center; there's a direct bus to the scenic area. Take the scenic area shuttle bus up the mountain; the driver will take you all the way to the last stop, so you might miss a few attractions. Hiking down the mountain allows you to see some nice spots. It takes about two hours to see the highlights.

South Shaolin Temple

It was quite a show. Even though the performance conflicted with my schedule, I still made time to see it. Chinese martial arts, starting from a young age, has a long history and is very meaningful. Quanzhou is truly a wonderful place, blessed with beautiful scenery and talented people. Due to time constraints, I didn't have a chance to properly see the other sights of Shaolin Temple. I'll definitely visit again next time.

West Street

As invited teachers, several of my colleagues and I accompanied parents and children to the puppet theater on the third floor of Kaiyuan Shengshi, witnessing firsthand the vibrant power of traditional craftsmanship during this one-hour performance. Four plays were presented in quick succession: "Little Bald Head Goes Down the Mountain" conveyed the message of diligence and growth through a story from an old Quanzhou street; "Daming Mansion" showcased loyalty and responsibility through acrobatic combat; "Fighting the Tiger" gripped the audience with its portrayal of Wu Song's bravery; and the grand finale, "Monkey Play Training the Monkey," with its ingenious "turning fruit into gold" and play-within-a-play concept, drew gasps of amazement from the teachers and students. The puppets, guided by silken strings, moved with lifelike agility, displaying remarkable skill as they twirled in the hands of the children. The children watched intently, their eyes glued to the screen, applause and laughter filling the theater. The essence of this study tour lay in bringing intangible cultural heritage from the books into reality. The children not only witnessed exquisite performances but also had the opportunity to personally manipulate the strings and hold the puppets in their hands during the post-performance experience, truly feeling the focus and perseverance behind "one minute on stage." Quanzhou string puppets and hand puppets are both listed as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. These are not forgotten relics, but rather a testament to the life passed down through generations of artisans. When children see the puppet monkey mimicking an artist controlling a clown, the intricate layers of craftsmanship allow them to intuitively understand the difficulty and joy of this heritage. This one-hour experience is not just a captivating performance, but a genuine dialogue with a thousand-year-old craft—approaching tradition with laughter and planting seeds of identification through hands-on experience. This is the most basic yet profound value of study tours.

Quanzhou Ancient City

Quanzhou Ancient City. Quanzhou is a place with a profound cultural heritage, reaching its peak during the Song and Yuan dynasties. It was the "largest port in the East" and the starting point of the "Maritime Silk Road." Designated one of the first batch of National Historical and Cultural Cities in 1982, and in 2021, "Quanzhou: A World Maritime Trade Center of Song and Yuan China" was inscribed on the World Heritage List, with eight World Heritage sites within the ancient city. The core urban area covers approximately 6.41 square kilometers, and the city's outline resembles a carp. The most central areas of the ancient city include: West Street (a thousand-year-old street), Kaiyuan Temple + East and West Pagodas, the Bell Tower, the arcade buildings along Zhongshan Road, Qingjing Mosque, the Confucian Temple, and the Tonghuai Guanyue Temple. Religious diversity coexists here, earning it the title of "World Religious Museum." Here, you can find traditional Minnan red-brick houses, Western-style buildings, and arcade buildings coexisting; intangible cultural heritage such as Nanyin music, Liyuan opera, and puppet shows are vibrant; Minnan delicacies such as tusu jelly, rice noodle soup, and runbing are abundant; the night view is dazzling, making it an excellent place for a walking tour. Don't bother eating at the food stalls on the pedestrian street; most of them are popular tourist spots, the taste is average, and they don't really represent the quality of Quanzhou snacks.

Quanzhou Maritime Museum

The guide was excellent and very dedicated. I was captivated for over two hours. Although the venue wasn't very large, the entire tour provided a comprehensive understanding of Quanzhou's maritime history and its various religious cultures. After the tour, the guide also led us to the adjacent religious stele museum, where we witnessed the harmonious coexistence of multiple religions. I learned a lot; Quanzhou truly deserves its title as a "religious museum."
