[Gunma] Founded in 795 AD! Discover "Ukishima Kannon-do" Across the Ukishima Bridge — traveler post in Numata

[Gunma] Founded in 795 AD! Discover "Ukishima Kannon-do" Across the Ukishima Bridge

When visiting the famous Fukiware Falls, make sure to add "Ukishima Bridge" and "Ukishima Kannon-do" to your itinerary. Ukishima Bridge offers up-close views of the stunning gorge carved by the Katashina River. One of its greatest draws is how the scenery transforms with the seasons—from vibrant fresh greenery to fiery autumn leaves 🍃 And while exploring, something truly caught my eye... A massive beehive nestled right on the cliffside! 🐝 It’s so large that you can spot it even from a considerable distance. Interestingly, I saw one in a similar spot last year and found it again this year. While I couldn't find details on how long it's been there or the specific species, it certainly left a lasting impression amidst the natural beauty of the valley. Just past the bridge lies "Ukishima Kannon-do." Records show its history dates back to 795 AD, the early Heian period. The main deity was restored in 1469, and the temple hall was rebuilt in 1534. The structure you see today was reconstructed in May 1984, faithfully preserving its original design. Inside, you’ll find the "Ukishima Nyoirin Kannon," a statue attributed to the legendary master craftsman Hidari Jingoro. Continuing further brings you to "Fukiware Bridge." You can enjoy views of landmarks like the "Meoto Iwa" (Husband and Wife Rocks) from a unique perspective, different from Ukishima Bridge. Fukiware Falls is more than just a waterfall; it's a complete experience encompassing historic bridges, sacred halls, and breathtaking valley vistas. After marveling at the falls, I highly recommend taking a short walk to explore these hidden gems ✨ 《Spot Info》 ⚫︎ Ukishima Kannon-do 📍 Oigai, Tone-machi, Numata City, Gunma Prefecture 🎫 Admission: Free 🕘 Hours: Open for public viewing 🚫 Winter Closure: Typically closed from mid-December to late March ※ The walking path is closed at night.

[Gunma] Why Does It Look Like a Demon? Exploring Hannya Rock and the Strange Formations of Fukiware Canyon. — traveler post in Numata

[Gunma] Why Does It Look Like a Demon? Exploring Hannya Rock and the Strange Formations of Fukiware Canyon.

The allure of Fukiware Falls extends far beyond the waterfall itself. As you explore the surrounding area, you'll encounter towering cliffs and uniquely shaped rock formations one after another. The most striking of these is "Hannya Rock" (Hannya-iwa). It gets its name from its resemblance to a Hannya mask—a classic Japanese demon face. According to Numata City’s official guide, the towering rock wall is called Hannya Rock because of this uncanny likeness. But how did these massive rock walls form in the first place? Fukiware Canyon is built on a foundation of Kozawa tuff and Fukiware welded tuff. Over countless years, the flow of the Katashina River has eroded the landscape, sculpting the valleys, cliffs, and various natural wonders we see today. Numata City highlights Hannya Rock, Byobu Rock, and Shishi Rock (Lion Rock) as prime examples of these natural artworks. Beyond Hannya Rock, you’ll find the "Rock Wall Cluster," an expanse of strange formations stretching tens of meters high. Walking through, you don't just see rocks; you truly feel how water has spent eons crafting this breathtaking scenery. A word of caution: the walking paths here are quite narrow, so please be mindful of others when taking photos. Numata City advises visitors to yield to one another due to the tight space around Hannya Rock. In fact, we stepped aside to let someone pass before stopping to take our own photos. The terrain can also be slippery, so it’s important to stay within the marked white lines or ropes and avoid using your phone while walking. If you’re visiting Fukiware Falls, make sure to take in the "natural sculptures carved by water" that surround it 🌿. ⚠️ There are slippery stairs on the way down to the falls, so I highly recommend wearing comfortable, sturdy shoes.

[Gunma] Captivating Every Time! Explore Fukiware Falls, the "Niagara of the East." — traveler post in Numata

[Gunma] Captivating Every Time! Explore Fukiware Falls, the "Niagara of the East."

Fukiware Falls in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. This is one of my favorite places that I find myself visiting over and over again. Though it's known as the "Niagara of the East," Fukiware Falls looks a little different from your typical waterfall. Rather than water plunging straight down, its defining feature is the way the water spreads horizontally, cascading into massive fissures carved into the riverbed. It stands 7 meters high and spans 30 meters wide. This unique landscape was formed over countless years as the Katashina River eroded the riverbed, creating numerous cracks in the softer sections of the rock. It is said to be named "Fukiware Falls" (literally "split-blown falls") because it looks as if a giant rock has been violently split open. And the charm of Fukiware Falls isn't limited to the waterfall itself. The surrounding area includes Masutobi Falls, Hannya Rock, Lion Rock, Ukishima Kannon Temple, Ukishima Bridge, and various observation decks. You can enjoy the beauty of the entire canyon while strolling along the walking trails. One of the biggest draws is how the scenery transforms with the seasons. The coming season brings the autumn leaves 🍁. According to Numata City's official records, the peak foliage is usually from late October to early November. Offering a different vibe from the current lush green landscape, you can enjoy the striking contrast between the autumn colors, the white rushing water, and the dark bedrock. From the fresh greenery of spring and the clear streams of summer to the fiery leaves of autumn, Fukiware Falls shows a different face every season. No matter how many times you visit, it’s a place where you can always discover scenery unique to that specific moment in time. 《Spot Information》 🏞️ Fukiware Falls 📍 Tone-machi Okkai, Numata City, Gunma Prefecture 🚗 Access About 25 minutes (approx. 16km) from the "Numata IC" on the Kan-etsu Expressway toward Oze via Route 120. 🚌 Public Transportation About 45 minutes by bus bound for Kamada from JR Numata Station. Get off at "Fukiware-no-taki" and walk for about 3 minutes. 🎫 Admission Free 🕘 Viewing The walking trails are closed at night. 🚫 Winter Closure Usually from mid-December to late March. 🅿️ Parking Free and paid parking lots available in the vicinity.

【A dreamlike purple sea of flowers】In early August, the Yuyuan Lavender Park is in full bloom, shrouded in mist! — traveler post in Numata

【A dreamlike purple sea of flowers】In early August, the Yuyuan Lavender Park is in full bloom, shrouded in mist!

I visited Tambara Lavender Park in early August, and the lavender was in full bloom, creating a spectacular sea of purple flowers! What was particularly special was the dense fog that day. Although the clear mountain views in the distance were obscured, the rolling mist surrounding the flower fields created a dreamy and beautiful "fairyland" atmosphere, making for uniquely atmospheric photos. While I couldn't help but wish for clear skies, the mysterious beauty of the misty landscape was still unforgettable. I highly recommend visiting in summer to enjoy the flowers and take a stroll!

Tambara Ski Park

I came here on August 2nd, and was soothed by the fresh breeze of the plateau and the scent of lavender. I took a cable car while climbing, and it went up slowly. Not only the lavender but also other flowers are beautiful.

Kawaba Ski Resort

Well, the ski resort isn't that big, so it's not bad for beginners, but intermediate and above skiers might find it a bit boring.

There is a resting spot that I will stay at when I join a one-day tour group in Gunma Prefecture. There are different local souvenir shops. The most unforgettable one is one of the delicious ice cream shops, which offers a lot of ice cream made in Gunma Prefecture. The taste is made from pears and the surrounding scenery is also very beautiful
