A Must for the Limited Express Nanki: Choose the Right Side for a Stunning Mountain and Sea Duet — traveler post in Owase

A Must for the Limited Express Nanki: Choose the Right Side for a Stunning Mountain and Sea Duet

On this railway journey connecting the sacred mountains and seas of Wakayama with Ise in Mie, I took the Kuroshio Express for the first leg, and for the second leg, departed from Kii-Katsuura Station on JR Central's newest Limited Express "Nanki." The soft, wood-toned design inside the cabin instantly puts you at ease the moment you step aboard. The new hybrid power system performs remarkably well, offering a ride as smooth and quiet as an electric train—completely shattering old stereotypes of diesel trains on non-electrified sections. As the train heads north along the Kisei Main Line, I highly recommend booking a window seat on the right side. The large panoramic windows bring the deep blue of the Pacific Ocean right into the cabin without reservation. From the coastline of Nachikatsuura and the Kumano River in Shingu to the lush, rolling emerald mountains around Owase, the scenery outside seamlessly transitions between vivid ocean blues and vibrant forest greens. Gliding along at a steady pace for about 2 hours and 40 minutes, the train finally arrives right on time at Tsu Station (where I was staying). This route is far more than just a simple transit connection; it's a visual feast capturing the very essence of the Kii Peninsula, making you reluctant to even blink.

Mie Prefecture: A Shrine Overlooking the Harbor | Sapphire Blue Ohai

Kuki Shrine in Kuki Town, Owase City, Mie Prefecture The sapphire blue sea visible from the shrine's steps sparkles brilliantly under the sunlight☀️ Kuki Shrine is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane and was reportedly called "Tenjin" during the Edo period. The area exudes a nostalgic and warm atmosphere, and as you stroll through the town, you might even encounter adorable cats🐱 If you venture further into the depths of Kuki Town from here, you can reach a hidden gem called "Ohai," known for its incredibly clear waters. However, proper gear is required to access this spot, so sneakers won't suffice. This time, I decided to pass, but next time, I'll be fully prepared to visit😊 📍Kuki Shrine 〒519-3701 Mie Prefecture, Owase City, Kuki Town 1028-1 🚗Parking Available

[Japan World Heritage] "10 Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range" The Kii Mountain Range has fostered reverence for nature since ancient times. After Buddhism was introduced in the 6th century, the Kii Mountain Range became a sacred site for mountain asceticism, including Shingon Buddhism. Especially Shugendo, which was founded between the mid-10th and 11th centuries, aimed to gain supernatural powers through mountain asceticism, with Mount Omine as its center of practice. Furthermore, the Kii Mountain Range also attracted many devotees as a sacred site for "Shinbutsu-shūgō" (a unique Japanese ideological system that considers ancient Japanese deities as manifestations of Buddhist deities), which flourished from the 9th to 10th centuries.

Walking along the ancient path, surrounded by lush mountains and forests, you can almost hear the echoes of history. The post stations, inscriptions, and other relics along the way bear witness to the endless stream of pilgrims in past years, who, with their faith, forged this path of cultural exchange. Owase Shrine - Traditional Heritage: Owase Shrine, with its long history, preserves many traditional buildings, the style of which is solemn and simple, and the details of which show the exquisite skills of the craftsmen. The cultural relics in the shrine, such as the lion mask, are not only works of art, but also carry the local beliefs and legends. The annual festivals attract many people to participate, which is very lively and fully demonstrates the charm of traditional Japanese shrine culture. Sone Ruins - Tracing Back to Ancient Times: Pottery fragments and stone tools from the Jomon period have been unearthed here, unveiling the mystery of early human life in the area. Archaeology enthusiasts and history buffs can learn about the cultural origins and development of Owase City thousands of years ago through these precious relics. 2. Unique Natural Landscape Owase Bay - The Interweaving of Mountains and Seas: The ria coastline makes the coastline of Owase Bay winding and twisting, and the water in the bay is clear and sparkling. The shrine's torii gates, main halls and other buildings complement the surrounding natural environment, and the simple wooden buildings look particularly quiet against the backdrop of green trees. Here, you can participate in some traditional rituals of the shrine, such as praying for blessings and drawing lots, and experience Japanese religious culture. Owase Shrine: Every year, Owase Shrine holds grand festivals, such as the Owase Sea Asia Festival. Mount Fuji

Chose to visit the Mount Fuji Instagram-famous spots on Trip.com's recommendation, and I couldn't have asked for a more relaxing and enjoyable experience. The itinerary included memorable locations such as Arakurayama Sengen Park, Hikawa Clock Shop, Oshino Hakkai, Kawaguchiko Lawson, and Lake Kawaguchi Oishi Park—each offering its own breathtaking view of Mt. Fuji. Our tour guide (Hikari) truly made the trip special: not only was he friendly, but he was also impressively patient throughout the day, making sure everyone felt comfortable and had enough time to enjoy each spot. The pace of the tour was just right, allowing for leisurely sightseeing and ample opportunities for taking photos—perfect for capturing those Instagram-worthy moments! If you're considering this day trip, I recommend bringing your camera and a light jacket, as weather around Mt. Fuji can change. The service from Trip.com was smooth and easy, making the whole experience stress-free.

Owase Shrine

The Turtle Market is held at the Wakasa Shrine in the fall and winter. Don't miss it. The Turtle Market usually includes three activities: shrine worship, small stalls, and bear hand sales. Shrine worship and small stalls are not uncommon, and such events can also be seen at ordinary festivals. The only difference is that the later the Turtle Market is, the more crowded it is, and the small stalls will not be set up until midnight. If you always think Tokyo is too boring without night markets, the night festival of Turtle Market is definitely not to be missed.

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan

Huge aquarium with helpful staff and is easy to navigate. The ticket prices were fair, and the array of creatures featured here was diverse; the whale sharks stole the show. The aquarium does get quite crowded around weekends and the holidays, so definitely plan in advance. This place should take about 2-3 hours to walk through. Overall the scenery was beautiful and the area it’s in is excellent for food and walking around.
