🚆 Review of Train No. 45
HAT YAI → PADANG BESAR 🇹🇭🇲🇾
If you want to start your Penang trip with a truly authentic train experience, Train No. 45 is one of the interesting routes. It's a special express train of the State Railway of Thailand that runs from Bangkok to Hat Yai, and then continues to Padang Besar, the Thai-Malaysian border, without changing trains at Hat Yai.
🚉 From Hat Yai to the Border
The journey from Hat Yai Junction to Padang Besar takes about 45 minutes. The distance isn't far, but the scenery changes steadily from Hat Yai station towards the border area.
The carriage I traveled in during this section felt very classic. The seats, the louvered windows, and the ceiling fans all contribute to a very classic Thai train experience.
🪑 What I liked about this train
What makes the journey interesting isn't the luxury, but the authentic atmosphere of traveling by train.
Along the way, you can enjoy the view through the louvered windows, the sunlight streaming into the carriage, and small details like the seat number signs, the fans, and the luggage racks. It feels like stepping back in time to ride an old-school Thai train.
For photography enthusiasts, this train offers numerous photo opportunities, from the train itself and the platforms to the details inside the carriages.
🇲🇾 What to do after arriving at Padang Besar?
Upon arrival at Padang Besar, prepare for Thai and Malaysian immigration procedures. Then, take the KTM Komuter train on the Malaysian side to Butterworth to continue your journey to Penang.
The train schedule for number 45 is important because it's an early morning train, allowing for onward travel into Malaysia on the same day. However, allow extra time for border procedures and check the latest KTM schedule before traveling.
📝 Summary from experience:
Train number 45 is suitable for those who are not in a hurry and want "travel" to be a part of their trip.
It doesn't offer the comfort of new or high-speed trains, but its charm lies in the train itself, the atmosphere, and the feeling of slowly making your journey from Hat Yai to the border. Before switching from Thai trains to the Malaysian railway system.
