Switzerland Jura Crest Trail: Weissenstein to Chasseral High Plateau Ridge Walk — traveler post in Solothurn

Switzerland Jura Crest Trail: Weissenstein to Chasseral High Plateau Ridge Walk

#arrivalguide I trained Zurich→Solothurn (1 h), then Solothurn→Oberdorf and the Weissenstein cable car (32 CHF return, half-fare accepted) to start the Jura Crest segment. Weissenstein (1,285 m) to Chasseral (1,607 m) is 18 km, 5.5–6 h, +1,070 m / –70 m if you count the Oberdorf leg; the ridge itself is rolling pasture with occasional fir strips. Signage is yellow on white, impossible to lose. The first third is a Planetenweg (scale-model solar system, fun if slow). Cross the language border at Montagne de Romont (French begins). Chasseral has a hotel-restaurant (coffee 5 CHF, rösti 24 CHF), card fine. Water: fountains at farms every 4–5 km, but carry 1.5 L on hot days. No wild camping in Canton Bern/Jura rules—use the Chasseral hotel or descent to St-Imier. I walked end of June; orchids in the meadows, but the ridge wind was 30 km/h. Mistake: I packed a 20 kg backpack expecting huts—none needed, day-hike it with a 5 kg daypack and train out from Biel side. Discussion: does the Jura crest feel like a “lesser” Alps alternative, or is its pastoral ridge exactly the point?

Switzerland Jura Plateau: Weissenstein to Chasseral Lookout Limestone Meadow Traverse — traveler post in Solothurn

Switzerland Jura Plateau: Weissenstein to Chasseral Lookout Limestone Meadow Traverse

#arrivalguide #ArrivalGuide #Switzerland #JuraPlateau The Swiss Jura often plays second fiddle to the Alps, but the traverse from Weissenstein to Chasseral offers some of the best "ridge walking" in the country. I started by taking the train to Solothurn, then the historic funicular (€14 round trip) up to Weissenstein. From the hotel there, I began the 15-kilometer traverse westward. The trail follows the Jura crestline almost entirely. It’s characterized by rolling limestone meadows dotted with "Creux du Van"-like rock formations. Unlike the steep, technical trails of the Alps, this path is relatively gentle but incredibly exposed. Sun protection is vital—there is almost no shade. I packed a picnic of local Solothurner Torte (€6) and bought fresh cheese from a herder tending cows on the slope (€12/kg, cash only). The views are the star: on one side, the Mittelland plains stretch to the horizon; on the other, the Bernese Alps rise in a wall of ice and rock. I encountered very few people after the first 3 kilometers, just the occasional paraglider launching from the cliffs. A practical tip: download the SwissTopo app maps beforehand; signage is good but not frequent. My mistake was underestimating the wind—the Jura ridge acts as a wind tunnel. Even on a warm day, a windproof jacket is necessary. The endpoint, Chasseral summit, has a restaurant and a bus stop for the return to St. Imier. Discussion: Does the "gentle" nature of the Jura plateau make it more or less enjoyable than the dramatic, rugged Alps for a multi-hour hike?

Experience the charm of "Solothurn," an old town.

🇨🇭 Experience the charm of "Solothurn," Switzerland's incredibly cute and peaceful old town ✨ Even though it was gloomy, cloudy, and rainy the whole way there on the day I visited 🌧️, I can honestly say it didn't take away from Solothurn's cuteness at all! It's a quiet, historic Baroque city with an Old Town that is an absolute joy to stroll through. The architecture is stunning and exquisitely detailed, featuring landmarks like the historic clock tower (Zeitglockenturm) and the majestic St. Ursus Cathedral standing proudly along the streets 🏰🏛️ The best part about this place is that you hardly run into any large tour groups or Thai tourists. If you love getting away from the crowds and immersing yourself in the local way of life, I highly recommend it! You'll mostly see European tourists enjoying a leisurely walk, sipping coffee, and relaxing. It has a classic, romantic vibe that's just perfect for taking a leisurely stroll and snapping some photos 📸☕ If you're planning a trip to Switzerland and want a change of pace by visiting an adorable, unseen, and off-the-beaten-path town, definitely add Solothurn to your bucket list! ❤️

New Member Joins Swiss Quality Hotels! Experience Winter Warmth in Solothurn

When January’s soft snow gently blankets the lush tree line of the Jura Mountains, and the Aare River’s waters appear even more serene in the crisp winter air, the Baroque-style old town of Solothurn in northwestern Switzerland dons a quiet and sacred silver coat. This city, known as the “City of Eleven,” reveals a unique rhythm where numbers and history intertwine during the snowy season. As the “City of Eleven,” Solothurn’s old town is filled with marks related to the number 11: 11 churches and chapels, 11 historic fountains, 11 towers... even the Cathedral of St. Ursus features 11 altars and 11 bells, with the grand staircase from the main entrance consisting of steps in sets of 11. Strolling through the snow-covered ancient streets feels like encountering this fascinating historical pact with every step. Visiting historical sites in winter offers a special ambiance. The 12th-century Zeitglockenturm (Clock Tower) looks even more majestic in the snow. Since 1545, its astronomical clock has featured a grim reaper turning an hourglass every hour, nodding to a knight symbolizing power—“Time is up.” The Landhaus by the Aare River was reborn from fire in 1955, and its interior houses historic murals and sculptures that quietly tell stories of the past. If caught in a snowstorm, seeking refuge in a museum is a wise choice. The Museum of Fine Arts in Solothurn holds masterpieces from artists ranging from young Hans Holbein to Hodler and others. Walking through the snow, you can also explore the mysterious Verena Gorge on the city’s edge, where hermits still reside. The snow-covered forest in winter adds to its tranquil power. UNESCO - Bern Old Town

It is a very exquisite place with well-preserved buildings. From the rose garden, it is a harmonious scene. Churches and other landmarks are dotted among them. Whether you are going to the market to check in or walking slowly, it is very leisurely.

BearPark

To be honest, there are not many bears in the bear park, especially if you travel during the National Day holiday, because it is a free open-air attraction, and the bears may be pulled back to the room. This is not a park, but a big pit. Here you can see the surrounding scenery, especially the small river and bridge.

Jungfraujoch - Top of Europe

Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is one of Switzerland’s most spectacular mountain destinations, offering an unforgettable experience high in the Swiss Alps. Surrounded by magnificent snow-covered peaks, vast glaciers, and breathtaking alpine scenery, the journey to the summit is an adventure itself. The panoramic views from the top are truly mesmerizing, especially on a clear day when the mountains seem to stretch endlessly into the horizon. Walking through the snowy landscape feels like entering a winter wonderland. The impressive Aletsch Glacier adds even more beauty to the experience. Jungfraujoch is a must-visit destination for travelers who love mountains, snow, photography, and extraordinary natural landscapes.

Clock Tower - Zytglogge

Bern Clock Tower, a masterpiece of Swiss watchmaking, is the most important landmark in Bern. Under the towering green spire, there is a bronze bell with a diameter of 127 cm and a weight of 1,400 kg. The front of the clock tower is inlaid with two clocks of different sizes. In the niche on the side of the small clock face below, there are two small bronze bells and bell-ringing figures, the god of time-Hans, golden dolls, golden roosters, and a row of bears, which are realistic, lively and interesting. Every 5 to 10 minutes before the hour is the busiest time in the clock tower. Bustling tourists gather in front of the clock tower and stop to watch the "time-telling doll show". Just after 57 minutes, the show begins. The bell-ringer who rotates out next to the big bronze bell begins to ring the bell to tell the time on the hour. In the niche, the god of time flipped the hourglass, the dolls danced with joy, the golden rooster spread its wings and crowed, and the little bears paraded in a procession, welcoming the arrival of a new moment. After the bell rang, the tourists left one after another with a sense of satisfaction.
