Two days in the Sahara – an excursion worth leaving the hotel for 🇹🇳

If you're vacationing in Tunisia and see a two-day trip to the Sahara on your list of excursions, I highly recommend checking it out. In just two days, they manage to show you almost half of the most interesting sights in the south of the country.

The first big stop is usually the El Jem Amphitheater – a huge Roman coliseum where you can walk around inside, climb up, and descend into the chambers beneath the arena.

Next, a completely different Tunisia begins – Matmata, with its almost Martian landscapes and underground Berber dwellings. Star Wars filming locations are also located here, including the sets for Luke Skywalker's family home.

And then – the Sahara. ❤️
In the Douz area, known as the gateway to the desert, you can usually enjoy camel and/or quad bike rides. We were dressed in local clothes, and this is one of those times when a tourist attraction suddenly becomes one of the most atmospheric parts of the trip. Sand, a vast horizon, a sunset – and almost nothing around.

We spend the night in the south of the country, and in the morning we continue on to the enormous salt lake Chott el-Djerid. At dawn, it looks absolutely unreal – a white salt surface and a pink-blue sky.

Also along the route are mountain oases, canyons, and waterfalls – for example, Chebika and Tamerza. After two days of sand, seeing palm trees and water among the rocks is especially unexpected.

The excursion is quite intense: early rises, many transfers, and these two days of impressions feel like a separate mini-trip. But it was after her that Tunisia became my love 🇹🇳🐪
