Want to eat like a local? Don't miss out on these top Utsunomiya dishes and foodie spots.

| Utsunomiya can be experienced like this. Utsunomiya is located in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, and is famous for its delicious Japanese dumplings. There are many Japanese dumpling restaurants near Utsunomiya Station. In addition to dumplings, the following two attractions are worth visiting and can be used as a day trip to Tokyo's niche destinations. 📷Wakatakenosha Wakayama Farm📷 Utsunomiya's "Wakatakenosha Wakayama Farm" is located at the foot of the Nikko Mountains. This huge bamboo forest is also the filming location of "Rurouni Kenshin"! Here you can also see many rare bamboo varieties, such as tortoiseshell bamboo and golden Mingzong bamboo. You can also experience tasting matcha with a cup made of bamboo. There are also dreamy bamboo forest light shows on weekends and holidays! 📷Oya History Museum📷 If you are interested in nature and geology, you can go to the "Oya History Museum" for exploration. Oya stone is a specialty of Utsunomiya. You can learn about the history of Oya stone mining at the Oya History Museum. The Oya History Museum has a huge underground mine network with a mining area of more than 20,000 square meters. The environment inside is very wild, and it feels like entering a pyramid. Enya has also filmed TV shows here, so fans will come here to check in. At the ROCKSIDE MARKET in the museum, you can also buy various Oya stone souvenirs and Mashiko ware. At noon, eat a meal of Utsunomiya's specialty dumplings or ramen at the nearby "BELL TERRACHE OYA", experience Oya stone stickers and then continue the afternoon itinerary.

This is a late food post. How late? It's from December 2023. The restaurant has even taken this dish off the menu. I can only share it as a novelty food experience. In Utsunomiya, you have to mention gyoza. Soldiers returning to Japan from Northeast China (formerly Manchuria) brought back the gyoza-making methods they learned there to Utsunomiya. Plus, Utsunomiya has an inland climate—hot in summer and cold in winter. A steaming, nutritionally balanced gyoza was just the thing to help people replenish their energy. Furthermore, the area is rich in high-quality ingredients like flour, pork, chives, and cabbage, so gyoza took root here. Utsunomiya is a place that has turned gyoza into its city calling card. On a slightly chilly night in December, I wanted a steaming hotpot more than pan-fried gyoza. Horse meat hotpot piqued my interest. The 3 types of horse meat were lean, marbled, and fatty (similar to brisket fat). The fatty part is very close to the brisket fat in Chaoshan hotpot, but even "harder" (since horses get so much exercise). It didn't have a gamey taste, but it wasn't exactly fragrant either. Rather than being amazingly delicious, it was more of a surprising novelty.

This spot is considered the most breathtaking and historically significant natural viewpoint in Tochigi Prefecture: the "Heiwa Kannon" (Goddess of Peace), a colossal statue of the Bodhisattva over 27 meters tall, intricately hand-carved into the ancient Oya cliff face. The surrounding atmosphere is incredibly beautiful and uplifting. The park's layout is perfectly designed, nestled amidst a complex array of sheer cliffs and lush trees, offering a refreshing cool breeze that is incredibly relaxing and invigorating. The highlight of this trip, and a popular feature along the walking route, is the "steep mountain pass and natural rock formations surrounding the statue." Giant rock walls are carved into the ground, running parallel to a safe fence. A must-see photo opportunity is taking pictures from a high vantage point, gazing directly through the intricate carvings on the cliff face, bathed in soft golden sunlight. Additionally, there's a charming viewpoint with stairs on the side, allowing visitors to easily access and enjoy panoramic views. This is the location of the Kannon statue. Located within Oya Park in Utsunomiya City, it's easily accessible by bus from Utsunomiya Station (West Exit), getting off at the Oya Kannon stop, and then a short walk to the park area. The spectacular open area is free to visit. The beautiful scenery and clear skies are sure to impress. (The best time to visit, with clear weather, and to comfortably explore the nearby Oya Stone History Museum, is year-round.) We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and sneakers, as the terrain consists of flat areas and natural stone paths around the cliff face connecting the viewpoints. For attire, we suggest choosing a coat or clean, minimalist outfit in light colors such as white, cream, or denim. This will enhance your appearance and create stunning, elegant photos against the backdrop of the grey-green Oya stone cliffs. #heiwakannon #oyastone #utsunomiya #tochigi #japan #japantravel #goddessofimmoniculum #beautifulphotospot #purenature #japantravelreview #oyastonecliff

🚗 On my way back from Fukushima and Aizu, I stopped by the Nasu Kogen Service Area (Inbound) on the Tohoku Expressway. I was genuinely surprised by the incredible selection of souvenirs here! ✨ In my opinion, the inbound side is much more impressive than the outbound side. From Tochigi staples like "Goyotei Cheesecake" and "Goyotei no Tsuki" to items from all across Kanto and Tohoku, the variety is amazing. 🍽️ Here are a few things that really caught my eye: · Nasu's famous "Goyotei Cheesecake" · The light and fluffy "Goyotei no Tsuki" cakes · Local ramen sets from Kitakata, Shirakawa, and Koriyama in Fukushima · Iwashita New Ginger-themed snacks and pink merchandise · Seasonal fruits like pears and apples It was actually quite funny to see so many Fukushima souvenirs here, even though I was just coming back from Aizu! (lol) There are also terrace seats outside where you can take a breather under the clear blue sky 🌿 It felt less like a typical highway stop and more like browsing a curated souvenir boutique. 📍 Nasu Kogen Service Area (Inbound / Toward Tokyo) If you forgot to pick up gifts on your way back from Tohoku, this is the place to go. Definitely worth a stop if you have a bit of extra time. What’s your "must-buy" souvenir whenever you stop at a service area? 📍 4092-2 Toyohara Hei, Nasu-machi, Nasu-gun, Tochigi Located on the Tohoku Expressway (Tokyo-bound) between Shirakawa IC and Nasu IC. Operating hours vary by shop. The terrace restaurant is usually open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM (open from 7:00 AM on weekends and holidays from March to November; last order at 8:30 PM). Please check the official website for souvenir shop hours.

Stopped by the Sano Service Area (downbound) during a drive on the Tohoku Expressway. 🌿 This place is more than just a quick pit stop. The view of the green mountains and the wide blue sky is so refreshing, and there's a lovely outdoor space and a Starbucks. Plus, with a dog run on-site, it’s a perfect spot to pull over if you’re traveling with your pup. In the souvenir section, you’ll find a huge variety of regional specialties, like "Kanto-Tochigi Lemon" themed snacks and merchandise, and even Iwashita New Ginger goods. From Sano ramen and Utsunomiya gyoza to Tokyo souvenirs, they have everything. 🛍️ The selection of Lemon Milk-inspired items was especially fun just to browse. ✨ 📍Sano Service Area (Downbound) Tohoku Expressway, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture Next time you’re driving this way, make sure to take your time exploring the gift shop. When you stop at a service area, what do you look forward to most—the local food or the souvenirs?

Arriving in Utsunomiya the night before, I realized something crucial: Many gyoza shops in Utsunomiya close surprisingly early! So this time, I headed straight to an official Utsunomiya Gyoza Association member store during the day: 📍 The Carol (ザ・餃子のキャロル) The entrance is plastered with photos and signs, giving off that unmistakable "Gyoza Capital" vibe. They offer more than just standard pan-fried dumplings; the variety is impressive: 🥟 Original Pan-fried Gyoza ¥500 🥟 Seafood Pan-fried Gyoza ¥700 🥟 Soup Gyoza ¥600 🥟 Shrimp Boiled Gyoza ¥700 🥟 Kuroge Wagyu Boiled Gyoza ¥700 They also serve ramen, gyoza sets, and chashu bowls. Our group of four spent a total of ¥2,900. The fun part about eating gyoza in Utsunomiya is that you shouldn't just hit up the "most famous" spot and call it a day. There are so many unique shops, each with its own signature recipe and style, making it the perfect city for a "gyoza crawl." Since this shop is an official member of the Utsunomiya Gyoza Association, it's a great starting point if you're new to the local scene. ⚠️ One more reminder: Many shops here close much earlier than those in Tokyo. If you want to get your gyoza fix, definitely plan to start your search during the day!

If you're visiting Utsunomiya, I highly recommend adding the Oya History Museum to your itinerary. Once you step into the underground quarry, the one feeling that hits you is: Just how small we really are. Photos can show the rock walls, the lighting, and the vast caverns, but they struggle to convey the sheer scale you feel standing inside. Originally an underground quarry for Oya stone, a portion of it is now open to the public. Walking through this massive subterranean world, you can see the distinct marks left by years of excavation on the walls. The real value here isn't just that it’s "Instagrammable"; it’s the sense of awe you get from being in that space. Seeing how humans carved out such an enormous underground world piece by piece makes you wonder: What exactly is the limit of human potential? ⚠️ It’s significantly colder underground than it is outside, so remember to bring a jacket. After the tour, ROCKSIDE MARKET is right next door—perfect for a break and some dessert. If you’re planning a trip to Utsunomiya or Nikko, make sure to save this spot. 📍 Oya History Museum 📍 909 Oyamachi, Utsunomiya, Tochigi Attractions

When you visit the Oya History Museum in Utsunomiya, I highly recommend adding this spot to your plans after touring the underground quarry: 📍ROCKSIDE MARKET It’s located right on the museum grounds, so there's no extra travel required. This time, I ordered: 🍓 Strawberry Shaved Ice The bowl looks incredible in photos—white shaved ice drizzled with strawberry sauce and topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream and fresh strawberries. I think pairing the Oya History Museum with ROCKSIDE MARKET makes for a perfect itinerary: ① Tour the Oya History Museum first ② Explore the underground quarry ③ Head over to ROCKSIDE MARKET to relax ④ Enjoy some desserts and drinks ⑤ Browse the curated local Tochigi goods The shop offers more than just coffee and sweets; you'll also find Oya stone products and local Tochigi crafts. It’s not just a "cafe next to the museum"—it’s an essential stop that fits perfectly into your Oya trip. 📍ROCKSIDE MARKET 📍909 Oyamachi, Utsunomiya, Tochigi 📍Inside the Oya History Museum grounds

On this trip to Utsunomiya, I really wanted to experience the famous "Gyoza Capital" for myself. However, I learned an important lesson once night fell: If you want to try Utsunomiya's legendary gyoza, don't wait too late! We started looking for dinner around 8 PM, only to find that many of our top choices were already closed. We ended up at Niigata Ramen Mujinzo on the 8th floor of the Tobu Utsunomiya Department Store: 📍 Niigata Ramen Mujinzo Here's what the four of us ordered: 🍜 Agodashi Shoyu ¥880 🍜 Shoyu ¥850 🍜 White Miso ¥980 🥟 3 Veggie Gyoza + Mini Chashu ¥630 🥟 5 Gyoza ¥500 🥚 Ajitama ¥300 💰 Total: ¥4,140 At least we can say we checked one thing off the list: We actually ate gyoza in Utsunomiya! That said, I don't think this meal answers whether Utsunomiya gyoza is worth a dedicated trip. I’m still on the hunt for those truly iconic, representative shops. My advice for first-timers: ✔️ Plan ahead if you want to hit the famous spots. ✔️ Don't wait until 8 PM to start looking for food. ✔️ If you arrive late, department store restaurants are a reliable backup plan. First meal in the Gyoza Capital done! Next time, I’ll find the gyoza that makes the trip truly worth it. 📍 Niigata Ramen Mujinzo, Tobu Utsunomiya Department Store 📍 8F, Tobu Utsunomiya Department Store

It was like an underground city. It was so beautiful. This was the filming location for the live-action version of Rurouni Kenshin. Because it's underground, it's cold. I recommend bringing a jacket.
わっしょいSENOI came here with my kids during Golden Week. We experienced activities like fishing and angling. The kid was very happy and he said he will come next time!!!
MilissaExpensive, small park
COYNTake a day to visit Utsunomiya, the station you pass through on your way to Nikko, and experience its unique charm. It's about a 20-minute walk straight from Utsunomiya Station. Climbing the stone steps to the shrine offers views of Utsunomiya's streets. The shrine enshrines three deities who are believed to bring good fortune in relationships, business success, traffic safety, health, and longevity. A particularly unique feature is the "gyoza-zuki" (gyoza dumplings) and "strawberry-zuki" (strawberry dumplings) – these are only found in Utsunomiya. Visiting in the afternoon or near dusk offers a different perspective for photos. There are donki (traditional Japanese kukri) shops, shopping areas, and restaurants opposite the shrine, making it very convenient.
背家庭遊There is no castle tower or anything like that, so it felt like a walk in an ordinary park. There is a museum.
Avril27The standard currency in Utsunomiya is JPY
Current exchange rate approx.: KRW ≈0.1JPY (actual exchange rates depend on the bank). Currency exchange tips:
1. Exchange currency at your local bank before departure, as rates are usually better than at the destination.
2. You can also withdraw cash from local ATMs.
3. Avoid exchanging currency at airports or hotels, as they offer the worst rates.
