Beigang Chaotian Temple, located in Beigang Township, Yunlin County, Taiwan, formerly known as "Tianhou Temple," is dedicated to the Heavenly Mother Mazu. Founded in 1694 by the Linji sect monk Shubi, it holds an extremely high position in Taiwanese folk religion, hailed as the "Headquarters of Mazu in Taiwan," and is a national historic site designated by the Ministry of Culture.

Historical and Cultural Features: Architecture and Crafts: The temple's architectural structure, wood carvings, stone carvings, and Koji pottery are all the work of renowned craftsmen (such as master carpenters from the Xidi School). The dragon pillars, caisson ceiling, and the cut-and-paste art on the temple roof of the main hall are particularly exquisite and aesthetically pleasing.

Important Folk Activities: The annual "Beigang Chaotian Temple Welcoming Mazu" ceremony, held on the 19th and 20th days of the third lunar month, is a grand religious event in Taiwan, renowned worldwide for its "Beigang Plow Cannon" (plow-head cannon) and the "Art Pavilion" parade featuring children dressed as real people.

Heritage: Although currently managed by a board of directors and supervisors, Chaotian Temple still maintains the tradition of employing monks of the Linji school of Buddhism as abbots and resident monks.

Visit and Transportation Suggestions: Nearby Dining: Zhongshan Road in front of the temple is a famous food area where you can sample Beigang specialties such as duck rice, glutinous rice balls soup, flatbread, peanuts, and sesame oil. Parking Information: During weekends or festivals when there are large crowds, it is recommended to park your vehicle at the nearby "Beigang Riverside Parking Lot" and then walk over for a smoother experience.
