Harbin Grand Theater is across the river from the Sun Island Scenic Area and adjacent to the Siberian Tiger Park. It covers an area of 72,000 square meters and a construction area of 79,000 square meters. The overall building includes a large theater, a small theater, a ticket office and a parking lot. The large theater mainly performs large-scale operas, dance dramas and ballets, while the small theater mainly meets the needs of dramas, chamber music performances, and also takes into account various functions such as opera performances and conferences. Harbin Grand Theater is positioned as an international high-end art display and exchange platform, a new landmark for urban construction and cultural development, a cultural hall for popularizing art education, and a base for exporting fine art products based in the Northeast and radiating across the country to Northeast Asia.

The design of Harbin Grand Theater is inspired by the ice and snow landscape of the north. The whole building complex is like a snow-capped mountain, and it is as smooth and natural as flowing water. In summer, it is like a silver ribbon floating between the blue water and blue sky; in winter, it is like a snow sculpture carved by the river wind, standing in the silver. The Grand Theater is integrated with the surrounding wetland landscape and becomes a part of the earth's landscape. It adopts the world's first method of introducing natural light into the theater, enriching the lighting method during non-performance periods and creating a new model of energy saving and environmental protection; the streamlined shape of the multi-island stands used in the theater is unified with the overall style of the building's exterior shape, which is both beautiful and novel; the small theater adopts a rear-opening stage, turning the outdoor landscape into the stage background, providing the audience with a novel viewing experience. The world's first walking sightseeing corridor is set up on the roof of the Grand Theater. Through the organic combination with sightseeing platforms at different heights, the entire Grand Theater has become an all-weather 360-degree viewing platform, providing visitors with a new perspective to enjoy the scenery. Harbin Grand Theater is located in a beautiful wetland, with trestle bridges and water systems around, providing visitors with different tour experiences all year round. The construction of Harbin Grand Theater also has many characteristics. In order to meet the requirements of fire protection, acoustics, aesthetics and other aspects, the designer innovatively used glass fiber reinforced cement (GRC) as the base material, and then pasted decorative wood strips on its surface. A total of more than 200,000 ash wood strips, with a total length of 190 kilometers, all had to be manually pasted one by one by skilled workers on site, and then the surface was polished and painted, finally presenting the texture and color of real wood.
