Temples keep a whole roster of guardian beasts on the payroll—some for wealth, some for longevity, some for safety, and some for career advancement, each in charge of its own domain. A field guide to guardian beasts at 6 temples in China and Thailand. Touch the right one to get the right luck 👇 🛕 Hangzhou Number One Wealth God Temple · pixiu for wealth 📍 Address: North Peak summit, Xihu District, Hangzhou (behind Lingyin Temple) 🙏 How to worship: Hike up to the Number One Wealth God Temple and touch the pixiu at the gate—left side to attract wealth, right side to safeguard wealth so it doesn’t flow out. ✨ Highlight: Pixiu has a big mouth and big rump—it only takes in, never lets out. It’s the signature guardian at wealth temples. After touching it, make a quick wish for prosperity. 🛕 Quanzhou Kaiyuan Temple · qilin wall 📍 Address: Kaiyuan Temple, Licheng District, Quanzhou (beside the West Pagoda) 🙏 How to worship: View the glazed relief wall beside the West Pagoda—the beast treads on ingots and ruyi, with its mouth poised to swallow the sun and moon. ✨ Highlight: This “qilin wall” is really an anti-greed wall: the beast’s insatiable desire warns people not to be greedy. Look, don’t covet. 🛕 Suzhou Xiyuan Temple · release pond turtles 📍 Address: No. 18 Xiyuan Lane, Liuyuan Road, Gusu District, Suzhou 🙏 How to worship: Stand by the release pond and watch the turtles—there are more turtles than fish. Offer a bite of food to soak up a little longevity luck. ✨ Highlight: The temple’s release pond has “longevity staff” by default. Turtles sunbathe and zone out all day; watch long enough and you’ll want to retire too. 🛕 Beijing Lama Temple · bronze lions at the gate 📍 Address: No. 12 Yonghegong Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing 🙏 How to worship: Before you enter, touch the bronze lions at the Yonghe Gate—there’s an old saying, “Touch the lion’s head and worries go away.” ✨ Highlight: The male lion steps on an embroidered ball and the female cuddles a cub. These celebrity lions draw daily lines of visitors eager to touch them—good luck goes to those who get there first. 🛕 Chiang Mai Wat Phra That Doi Suthep · Naga stairway 📍 Address: Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai, Thailand (take a taxi or songthaew up from the Old City) 🙏 How to worship: Climb the 300+ steps of the dragon stairway—Naga guardians coil along both sides. Step by step, rise higher, then pay respect at the golden chedi on top. ✨ Highlight: Naga are guardian beasts of Thai temples. This stairway is a hands-on “rise step by step” experience. 🛕 Bangkok Central World Ganesha · guardian of wisdom 📍 Address: Outside Central World mall, Bangkok (next to the love god shrine) 🙏 How to worship: Pray to Ganesha—the god of wisdom. Offer flowers, fruit, and milk (no meat) to seek clarity and insight. ✨ Highlight: With an elephant head and human body, Ganesha embodies wisdom in Indian mythology. In Thailand, people visit to seek success in jobs and studies. These guardian beasts have stood watch for hundreds of years, each with its own KPI: wealth, longevity, safety, and promotions. Touch the right one to tap into the right luck. ⚠️ Disclaimer: Metaphysical content is for reference only. Touching guardian beasts and praying can serve as a psychological anchor, but good fortune ultimately comes from your own actions. Sincerity helps, action helps more.

When fall in Beijing takes on a soft blush, pink muhly grass reaches its peak. Feathery plumes ripple in the breeze like mist, rolling into gentle waves. Catch the full bloom and enjoy a limited-time pink escape in the capital. 🌸 Beijing Wenyu River Park (Gucheng Memories) ⏰ Time: Sunflowers are in full bloom across the park from mid-September to early October. Pink muhly grass has entered its peak viewing period, with the best time around the National Day holiday. ✨ Highlights: • A tri-color fall panorama where golden sunflowers, green-to-gold rice paddies, and misty pink muhly grass create a sea of flowers intertwined with farmland. • Hongting area: Enter through gate 80 and walk straight about 300m. The fine, airy plumes of pink muhly fade to soft pink from the leaf tips, spreading like a ground-hugging pink cloud. • Newly planted this year near Hongting: a swath of dwarf sunflowers. Their golden disks dot the edge of the pink “cloud.” About 10 mu (approx. 1.6 acres) of pink muhly pairs with 4 mu (approx. 0.7 acres) of sunflowers, set against emerald lawns and scattered groves. • Qinggeng Yudu area: Enter through gate 83 and walk straight about 300m. Inspired by Han-dynasty farming settlements, approx. 16 mu (approx. 2.6 acres) of golden sunflowers overlap with 6 mu (approx. 1.0 acre) of rice just turning from green to yellow. • Sunflowers cascade down the slope in terraced bands. Wooden boardwalks and cottages sit along the field ridges, and high platforms in the paddies offer panoramic views of the flower fields. 🌼 Olympic Forest Park (north park) ✨ Highlights: • During the National Day holiday, the north park hosts a fall flower show themed "Soft pink and chrysanthemum mist, autumn colors at Olympic Forest Park," featuring flower fields, interactive installations, themed events, cultural-creative stalls, and lanterns among the blooms. • By day, the west field bursts with cosmos and sulfur cosmos, while the east field’s pink muhly rolls like clouds. At dusk, looking into the setting sun, the pink muhly turns dreamlike. • Between the fields are signature swings, including the wind-and-cloud corridor swing, cloud-yao swing, flower-boat swing, “Firefly” steel-frame swing, bird’s-nest swing, and canvas-matrix swing, plus small landscape pieces like umbrella seats, an autumn portal, and a flying-fish rattan installation. • At night, the fields switch to night mode. The west field lights up with the "Keke and Biaobiao" IP lantern carousel, a guess-the-riddle interactive setup, flower lanterns, and a "Fragrant osmanthus" display board. Lantern groups crafted with intangible cultural heritage techniques glow and rotate. 🌷 Aobei Forest Park phase 2 ✨ Highlights: • In the fall sunlight, pink muhly shimmers softly like smoke and mist, making it a must-snap spot as soon as you enter. • From morning to dusk, the flower paths are lively: in the morning, plumes wear a veil of golden light; at noon, the pink shines bright; by evening, the low sun sets the entire field aglow with a velvety sheen. • A lifestyle market lines the forest trail with more than 60 specialty stalls. Classic and trending bites mingle, including beer and BBQ, teppan squid, egg waffle ice cream, fruit shaved ice, and cheesy baked corn. • Sugar figurines and sugar painting demos draw crowds, while blessing postcards, Beijing-style cultural-creative goods, and fall gift sets fill the shelves. 🌻 Yongding Park ✨ Highlights: • In fall, Yongding Park brings together sunflowers, pink muhly, cosmos, and rice paddies. • This year’s sunflower sea showcases a dwarf, big-headed oilseed variety with neat, compact plants and full flower disks for a relaxed, uplifting look. • Sweeping fields of pink muhly look like drifting clouds and fog, sending ripples of pink with every breeze. The cosmos fields weave pink, white, and purple into a dazzling floral carpet. • Beyond the blooms, the rice paddies shift from emerald to gold. Heavy heads bow low, and waves of rice ripple in the wind. 💜 Purple Valley Eden ✨ Highlights: • Pink muhly is airy and cloudlike, naturally hazy in soft light. At dusk, the pink waves sway gently in the evening breeze. • Nearby, vibrant fall flowers are in full swing: black-eyed Susans cluster in layers, ball chrysanthemums are plush and round, marigolds glow orange-yellow, and cosmos dance lightly. • Delicate asters sparkle without competing for attention. After fall dew, verbena deepens to a rich purple, stretching like a sea of blooms with European-style windmills as accents. 💡 Travel tips: • Wenyu River Park suggested route: Enter at gate 83. Walk 300m straight to the Qinggeng Yudu sunflower and rice area, then stroll along the riverside path to the pink muhly grass zone. Finish with views from the waterside boardwalk and head back along the return route. • Outfit tips: Go for soft, pastoral tones. Choose low-saturation solid colors like off-white, light coffee, pale blue, or nude pink. • Bloom times may shift with weather. Check with the park for the latest updates before you go. • Be a courteous visitor: do not pick flowers, do not dig up wild plants, and do not disturb or feed animals, so we can enjoy the beauty year after year. Come to Beijing for a limited-time pink rendezvous!

Wishes Come True at These Temples: How to Give Thanks

Wishes Come True at These Temples: How to Give ThanksHOT

Making a wish feels great in the moment, but paying it back can bring tears — worse yet, your wish came true and you don’t know where to go to give thanks. When it comes to giving thanks at temples, the biggest pitfalls are going to the wrong temple or making the wrong offering. Here’s a guide to 6 temples in China and Thailand for giving thanks: who to thank, how to do it, and what to bring. Plan it all at a glance 👇 🛕 Hangzhou Lingyin Temple · dedicated session for giving thanks at a wish-making sanctuary 📍 Address: No. 1 Fayun Lane, Lingyin Road, Xihu District, Hangzhou 🙏 How to give thanks: choose one of three — copy sutras, have a vegetarian meal, or donate incense. Repay whatever you promised when you made your wish. Remember to provide your name and address. ✨ Highlights: The official guideline says “if your wish comes true, you must return to give thanks.” One of the busiest sites for giving thanks. 🛕 Beijing Lama Temple · the most popular place where people line up to give thanks 📍 Address: No. 12 Yonghegong Street, Dongcheng District, Beijing 🙏 How to give thanks: offer incense + fruit (apples for safety, oranges for wishes fulfilled), then get a glass-bead bracelet with incense ash to take the blessing with you. ✨ Highlights: A gathering place for young “incense-offering” visitors. At opening time, people dash in to offer the first incense, and the line for giving thanks can be even longer than the line for making wishes. 🛕 Nanjing Jiming Temple · dedicated session for giving thanks for romance 📍 Address: No. 1 Jimingsi Road, Xuanwu District, Nanjing 🙏 How to give thanks: if you found a partner or got married, return to offer flowers in thanks to the Bodhisattva. Remember to come back if your wish for love came true. ✨ Highlights: Equally famous for cherry blossoms and romance. Those returning to give thanks often smile even brighter than those making wishes. 🛕 Chengdu Wenshu Monastery · a site for giving thanks after exams 📍 Address: No. 66 Wenshuyuan Street, Qingyang District, Chengdu (Wenshu Monastery Station, Subway Line 1, Exit K. Approx. 400 m on foot) 🙏 How to give thanks: return after exams to thank Manjushri. Pick up three sticks of light incense at the entrance. Remember to come back to give thanks when your wish is fulfilled. ✨ Highlights: Most popular around high school and college entrance exams. Parents pray to Manjushri for top scores, and students come back after the exams to give thanks. 🛕 Bangkok Erawan Shrine · giving-thanks dances that made it famous 📍 Address: Ratchaprasong intersection, Bangkok (across from the CentralWorld shopping mall, next to the Erawan Hotel) 🙏 How to give thanks: when your wish comes true, invite dancers to perform as an offering. Choose 2/4/6/8 dancers. Provide your name and wish, and the classical dance will be performed on the spot. ✨ Highlights: Thailand’s most renowned giving-thanks ritual. The dances run in rotation all day, easy to watch as you pass by. 🛕 Bangkok Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Rajwaramahawihan · drop coins to give thanks and make merit 📍 Address: South of The Grand Palace, Bangkok (a short walk from Tha Thien Pier) 🙏 How to give thanks: drop coins sequentially into 108 bronze alms bowls to make merit. You can also apply gold leaf to the Buddha statue in gratitude. ✨ Highlights: A 46 m reclining Buddha and 108 auspicious symbols on the soles of the feet. While giving thanks, touch the Buddha’s feet for double the luck. If you owe a vow to the Buddha, you’ll have to repay it sooner or later. Closing the loop means paying it back the right way. *For reference only. Making and repaying vows can serve as a psychological anchor. Good luck and outcomes ultimately come from your own steps forward. Sincerity helps, and action helps even more.

Dark tourism is set to be huge in 2026. The ultimate Halloween playbook is here! Go beyond the usual local haunts. China hides 5 K-drama–level dark-aesthetic escapes with eerie, cool, and elevated vibes—perfect for Halloween. These under-the-radar picks won’t feel overdone, and they channel the same moody vintage feel as "Goblin" and "Hotel Del Luna." They’re the new gold standard for must-visit photo ops and are guaranteed to blow up your social feeds✨ 1️⃣ Chongqing Fengdu Ghost City | China’s capital of the underworld🕯️ A millennia-old sanctuary of netherworld culture on the banks of the Yangtze. See the Gates of Hell, Eighteen Levels of Hell sculptures, and hanging temples that bring traditional underworld lore to life. Around Halloween, mist and drizzle dial up the immersion for a chilling, mysterious vibe. If you dare, catch the nighttime live-action show. With light and shadow weaving through ancient scenes, it’s an exhilarating and unforgettable way to dive into an eerie, old-world atmosphere😱 2️⃣ Huangliang Dream in Handan, Hebei | Real-life nightmare maze🏚️ A centuries-old Taoist temple hidden in a bustling city, its labyrinthine courtyards ooze atmosphere. Underworld-themed sculptures are everywhere, delivering the same cool, uncanny feel as the K-drama "Goblin." After dark, rows of red lanterns light up one by one. The deep courtyards and dappled light create an immersive experience that goes far beyond a typical escape room, maxing out that retro dark aesthetic💀 3️⃣ Beijing No.81 Courtyard | Beijing’s most haunted house🏚️ This century-old Republican-era mansion is a buzzworthy dark landmark steeped in legend, with mysterious tales adding a cinematic filter to every corner. It’s a go-to gothic-inspired photo spot—throw on dark-toned outfits and capture elevated, moody portraits. It’s a surefire way to go viral on Xiaohongshu and Moments. After you check it off your list, link it with Wusi Street and the Peking University Red House to unlock an off-the-beaten-path Beijing itinerary📸 4️⃣ Guangzhou Shamian Island | Old-world European ruins vibe🌿 Historic British and French concession buildings come with a ready-made retro filter. Weathered walls wrapped in lush vines evoke a small-town vibe reminiscent of "Stranger Things." In October, during Halloween, the island’s creative markets come alive. With gentle evening breezes and a rich atmosphere, a simple black coat on camera instantly nails the cool, elevated darkness of The Glory. 5️⃣ Hailongtun in Zunyi, Guizhou | Hidden eastern castle🏯 Often dubbed the Oriental Machu Picchu, this Ming-era Tusi fortress ruin is a lesser-known mountain escape that photographs beautifully with a dark aesthetic. In late October, mountain mists often linger, wrapping the ancient ruins in a dreamlike shroud that mirrors the Korean dark-aesthetic vibes of "Hotel Del Luna." Trails are divided by difficulty, so even beginners and the faint of heart can check it off their list while soaking in the site’s mysterious, ancient aura. Skip the same old Halloween parties and the packed, overhyped spots. This Halloween season, unlock elevated, niche dark tourism, immerse yourself in a mysterious atmosphere, and capture an exclusive set of dark-themed shots to freeze your own fall romance and thrills✨ Save this travel guide, get ready to go, and unlock a different kind of Halloween!

Beijing’s Palace Museum showcases the grandeur of the Ming and Qing courts, Sichuan’s Sanxingdui Museum unveils the mysterious Shu civilization from 3,000 years ago, and Shaanxi History Museum distills the splendor of a capital that hosted 13 dynasties. Together, these three museums trace a timeline from antiquity to the early modern era—an in-depth cultural journey for anyone fascinated by Eastern civilizations. About the Palace Museum in Beijing 👑 ▪️ Also known as the Forbidden City, the Palace Museum sits at the heart of Beijing and served as the imperial palace of the Ming and Qing dynasties. A total of 24 emperors lived and governed here. Covering about 720,000 square meters, it is the largest surviving wooden palace complex in the world. ▪️ Unlike the heavy stone architecture of many European palaces, the Forbidden City is equally monumental yet distinctly Chinese: a strict north–south central axis, red walls and yellow glazed tiles, sweeping eaves, and complex bracket sets—everywhere you look reflects traditional ritual order and a cosmic worldview. ▪️ The Hall of Supreme Harmony, Hall of Central Harmony, and Hall of Preserving Harmony along the central axis form the symbolic core complex. The Hall of Supreme Harmony hosted enthronement ceremonies, and its gilded throne symbolizes imperial power. Some halls may have phased closures for conservation or restoration. Check official notices before your visit. ▪️ The Treasure Gallery and the Clock and Watch Gallery, located in the Eastern Six Palaces area, house a wealth of Qing imperial treasures and mechanical clocks from Europe, including gifts once presented by British envoys—making for an intriguing cross-cultural comparison for visitors from the UK. ▪️ Plan for at least half a day. Enter via the Meridian Gate and exit via the Shenwu Gate or Donghua Gate for a smooth route. Tickets must be reserved in advance with timed entry. Opening hours vary slightly between peak and off-peak seasons, and summer/holidays see heavy crowds, so plan ahead. 🎫 ▪️ After your visit, walk to Jingshan Park and climb to the Wanchun Pavilion for a panoramic view of the entire Forbidden City—an iconic photo spot. About the Sanxingdui Museum 🗿 ▪️ Located in Guanghan, Sichuan Province, about 40 km from Chengdu, Sanxingdui Museum showcases artifacts unearthed from the Shu civilization dating roughly 3,000–5,000 years ago. ▪️ Excavated sacrificial pits have yielded large numbers of bronze masks, bronze sacred trees, gold scepters, ivory, and more—challenging long-held notions that Chinese civilization was centered solely in the Central Plains. Newly excavated items are progressively restored and exhibited to the public. ▪️ Unlike the solemn, symmetrical bronzes of the Shang and Zhou Central Plains, Sanxingdui bronzes are fantastically imaginative—huge protruding-eye masks, vertical-eye figures, and sky-reaching sacred trees that exude mystery. ▪️ The large standing bronze figure is about 2.6m high—one of the earliest, largest, and most complete bronze standing figures in the world. The bronze sacred tree rises nearly 4m, with divine birds perched on its branches. It is believed to have been a ritual conduit between heaven and earth. 🌳 ▪️ The new exhibition hall centers on the theme “Asleep for millennia, awakened to awe,” with three main galleries and an interactive zone. It features many artifacts and employs climate-controlled cases and glasses-free 3D, offering a contemporary experience. ▪️ For the latest exhibition updates, opening hours, and reservation rules, refer to official channels. ▪️ Getting there: take a high-speed train from Chengdu East Railway Station to Guanghan North, then a taxi to the museum. You can also join a day tour from Chengdu or charter a vehicle for a convenient round trip. 🚄 About Shaanxi History Museum 🏺 ▪️ Based in the ancient capital of Xi'an, Shaanxi History Museum is among China’s first national first-grade museums and is acclaimed as a “treasure house of Huaxia.” Its vast collection spans from prehistory to the late Qing. In addition to the main building, the Qin and Han Civilization Museum (a branch) focuses on Qin and Han themes. ▪️ Xi'an, historically known as Chang'an, was the capital for 13 dynasties including the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang, and the eastern starting point of the ancient Silk Road. This background gives the museum an exceptionally dense and high-caliber collection. ▪️ Unlike the Palace Museum’s emphasis on imperial life, Shaanxi History Museum also presents imperial grandeur but highlights the long, continuous arc of Chinese civilization, especially the peaks of the Zhou, Qin, Han, and Tang eras. ▪️ Signature masterpieces include a gold-inlaid agate cup with animal-head terminals, a gilt silver ewer with a dancing horse holding a cup, the empress’s seal, the Du tiger tally, and a gilt bronze silkworm—each telling a story of the Silk Road or dynastic change. ▪️ The “Treasures of the Great Tang” special exhibition showcases the Hejia Village hoard of gold and silver, with exquisite craftsmanship and imported elements from Persia, Sogdia, and Rome—direct evidence of Silk Road exchange. The Tang mural gallery, famous for rare tomb murals, requires a separate reservation. ✨ ▪️ Admission is free but by reservation with timed entry. The main building and the Qin and Han branch release reservations separately. Quotas during summer and holidays are extremely competitive and are released at fixed times—be ready to book the moment they open. During peak seasons the museum often adjusts closure days and extends opening hours; follow official notices for details. ▪️ After the museum, consider visiting the Mausoleum of the First Qin Emperor and the Terracotta Army, the Big Wild Goose Pagoda, and Xi'an’s ancient city wall to compare artifacts with their historical settings. Practical tips 📝 ▪️ Reservations: the Palace Museum, Sanxingdui, and Shaanxi History Museum all require real-name reservations, especially busy in summer and on holidays. Rules and release times vary by venue. Your passport can serve as a valid ID for international visitors. 🎫 ▪️ Guides: all three museums offer audio guide rentals with English available. Many galleries have bilingual labels. For deeper insight, book a live guided tour or join an official English tour group. ▪️ Photography: most outdoor and many indoor areas of the Palace Museum allow photography, but flash and selfie sticks are prohibited. Some precious exhibits at Sanxingdui and Shaanxi History Museum are not allowed to be photographed—follow display case notices. 📸 ▪️ Transportation: high-speed trains and flights are frequent between Beijing, Chengdu, and Xi'an, making it easy to link your itinerary. The Beijing–Xi'an high-speed train takes about 5 hours, and Xi'an–Chengdu takes about 3–4 hours. ▪️ Language and payment: major cities and top attractions have decent English coverage, and translation apps help with daily communication. Mobile payments primarily use WeChat Pay and Alipay, both of which support linking overseas bank cards. 💳 ▪️ What to wear: museum interiors are temperature-controlled, and air conditioning can feel cool in summer—bring a light layer. The Palace Museum covers a large outdoor area, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. 👟 ▪️ Food: signature local dishes include Beijing roast duck, Sichuan cuisine, and Xi'an specialties like yangrou paomo and roujiamo, with distinct flavor profiles. If you are sensitive to spice, ask for mild or no spice when ordering. 🍜 From the red walls and gilded roofs of the Forbidden City, to the bronze sacred trees of Sanxingdui, to the Tang gold and silver at Shaanxi History Museum—one trip offers a sweeping view of 5,000 years of Chinese civilization at its finest.
