Take the bus from the Kuju Town Community Bus Bus Stop "Kuju Tozanguchi (Chojahara) Miyama-mae" in front of Montbel in Chojahara and you will arrive at Makinoto Pass for about 7 minutes. If you walk on the Kyushu Nature Promenade, it takes about an hour from Chojahara. From the trailhead on the rest house side, you can climb the Kuju mountain range. From the rest house, you can climb the observatory (less than 10 minutes walk) and Mt. Kuroiwa (30 minutes walk climbing) from the other side.
