The caves of Matera had been inhabited for centuries, even now people there are still living there, after been renovated to become a comfortable houses. In 1993 the town was made a UNESCO World Heritage site, for being "the most outstanding, intact example of a troglodyte settlement in the Mediterranean region, perfectly adapted to its terrain and ecosystem".

The Sassi were definitely beautiful, especially in the evening or at night. Coming here during Christmas time and you can see the nice holiday decorations, special markets, and a nice holiday vibe. weather was also great!
We set off from Bari Port and it was well worth an hour drive one way. It was very interesting to stand on old land and learn about the history of this very special place. It was a walk and staircase but it was worth it! There are lots of restaurants to enjoy while you are there. The city is lovely too.
Matella Stone City, although it seems to be a not very big ancient city today, in the era of the time, it was enough to build such a city in such a place to prove the greatness and clever wisdom of mankind. The Grand Canyon of the ancient city formed a natural fortress. Today we see beautiful scenery, perhaps there have been countless battles and killings here
Let me know about the less famous place of Mattera, but as the oldest city in the world, Mattera has been populated since the Paleolithic period. In the 3rd century BC, the Romans created this city. In the Middle Ages, Mattela was conquered by the Lombards and became part of the Principality of Benevento. Later, it became part of the Kingdom of Sicily. After the reunification of Italy, it became the capital of the province of Mattela in 1927. The tourists in Italy are really crowded. We found a few Michelin restaurants next to the 007 shooting site, in the traditional cave, worth a try. See these photos to recognize a few of the pictures are filmed
The main purpose of coming to Matera is to feel the cave houses and houses in this ancient and primitive stone city, but with the development and progress of society, the cave has been renovated very modern, but you can still experience the ancient people living in the cave. A happy life, the cave house is warm in winter and cool in summer, and living here really has a feeling of living in peace.
Matera is an ancient stone city located in the southeast of Italy that still retains many original caves. Many houses in the old town are caves chiselled on the rocks, and many buildings are built with stones. There is a deep ditch behind this ancient city. It can be said that it is easy to defend and difficult to attack. For friends who drive in Italy, it is still worth a visit if time permits.
