Beijing West Railway Station (北京西站) is at No. 118 Lianhuachi East Road in Fengtai District, on the southwest edge of the city, about 8 km from the Forbidden City and 36 km from Beijing Capital Airport.
It opened on 21 January 1996 and, at 510,000 sq m, was the largest railway station in Asia when it was built. It has 18 platforms and 20 tracks, and it is the only Beijing station that mixes conventional and high-speed trains on the same concourse: platforms 1–11 take conventional services, platforms 12–18 take high-speed ones.
That mix is why Beijing West matters. It is the terminus for the Beijing–Guangzhou high-speed line, the Beijing–Xiong'an intercity line, long-distance trains to the west and southwest, the Lhasa service, and the high-speed trains to Hong Kong West Kowloon.

| Station | What it serves | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing West | Southwest, northwest, Hong Kong | Xi'an, Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hong Kong, Lhasa, Xiong'an |
| Beijing South | High-speed east and south | Shanghai, Tianjin, Nanjing, Hangzhou, Qingdao |
| Beijing Railway Station | Conventional trains, some northeast G | Harbin, Shenyang, Dalian; overnight to Shanghai |
| Beijing Chaoyang | Most northeast high-speed | Shenyang, Changchun, Harbin |
| Beijing Fengtai | Overflow high-speed | Some Guangzhou and Shenzhen services |
The rule of thumb: if you are heading west or southwest, or to Hong Kong, you want Beijing West. If you are heading to Shanghai or Tianjin, you want Beijing South, and the two are 25 minutes apart by taxi.
Both lines stop under the station on -2F, with a shared transfer hall on -1F. They are cross-platform interchange, so you can often step across the same platform to change lines.
The metro exits come up on both the north and south squares. Follow the signs for the square matching your waiting room.
Beijing West is one of the busiest taxi pick-up points in the city. Official ranks are on -1F and -2F, plus a spiral ramp on the east side of the north square.
| From | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Tiananmen Square | 20 min | CNY 35 |
| Beijing South | 25 min | CNY 40 |
| Beijing Capital Airport (PEK) | 50 min | CNY 130 |
| Beijing Daxing Airport (PKX) | 55 min | CNY 180 |
Avoid the Lianhuachi East Road approach between 07:30 and 09:30; the queue into the drop-off zone can add 20 minutes.
Bus stands sit on both squares, with long-distance coaches leaving from the coach station beside the north square for Hebei, Shanxi and further west.
An airport shuttle leaves the east side of the south square hourly from 06:00 to 20:30. The metro alternative is Line 7 to Ciqikou, Line 5 to Beixinqiao, then the Airport Express — about 90 minutes with luggage.
Search Beijing West to your destination, choose your class, and pay by card or PayPal. Booking opens 15 days ahead; Xi'an and Chengdu services on holiday weekends are the first to sell out.
The official app is fee-free with an English interface, but foreign passport verification takes 3–5 days. Register before you need it.
Ticket offices are on the north square east side, the south square west side, 2F east and 1F northeast. Refunds and changes are handled at the -2F west counter. Self-service machines mostly read Chinese ID cards; passport holders should use a staffed window.
Beijing West has 13 waiting rooms on 2F and they are assigned by train type, not by destination. Getting this wrong means a long walk with your bags.
| Waiting rooms | Train types |
|---|---|
| 1–7 | K, T and Z conventional trains |
| 8–13 | G and D high-speed trains |
| Dedicated room | T27 to Lhasa |
The departure boards list your train number, waiting room and gate. Take a photo of the screen when you arrive — the room number is the detail people forget.
If your train number starts with G or D, head straight to rooms 8–13 on the west side. For a conventional sleeper, rooms 1–7 are on the east side.

Fares are second class on high-speed services, or the cheapest hard sleeper on conventional ones, checked in October 2026.
| Route | Typical trains | Journey time | From |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xi'an North | G | 4h 10m–5h 58m | CNY 515 |
| Guangzhou South | G | 7h 17m | CNY 862 |
| Hong Kong West Kowloon | G | 8h 12m–10h 18m | CNY 1,061 |
| Chengdu East | G, D | 7h 28m and up | CNY 590 |
| Guilin North | G, D | 7h 58m–11h 33m | CNY 648.5 |
| Lanzhou West | G | 6h 43m–9h 15m | CNY 731 |
| Lhasa | Z21 | 39h 58m | CNY 763 (hard sleeper) |
| Urumqi | Z179 | 38h 23m | CNY 637 (hard sleeper) |
Two G trains run from Beijing West to Hong Kong West Kowloon, leaving at 10:00 and 21:01. The journey takes 8–10 hours and second class starts at CNY 1,061.
Immigration and customs for these trains are handled on arrival at West Kowloon, not at Beijing West, so you do not clear border control before boarding. Arrive at least 90 minutes early anyway — the gate closes 5 minutes before departure and there is no rebooking after that.
Z21 to Lhasa takes just under 40 hours and leaves in the evening. Hard sleeper starts at CNY 763, and the train climbs gradually, which is the reason many travellers choose it over flying: the slow ascent gives your body time to adjust to the altitude. Book well ahead in summer.
- Arrive 60–90 minutes early. This is the most congested station in Beijing, and the walk from the entrance to rooms 8–13 is long.
- Enter from the north or south square and clear ID check and security.
- Go up to 2F and read the departure board for your waiting room.
- Wait in the assigned room, then move to the gate when boarding is called.
- Gates open about 30 minutes before departure and close 5 minutes before.
- Match the carriage number on the platform. Some platforms serve two trains, so check the LED board above the gate.
Passport holders use the manual channel at the gate. If you miss the train, the refund and change counter on -2F west can move you to a later service the same day.
| Level | What is there |
|---|---|
| 2F | 13 waiting rooms, ticket offices (east and west), shops, food court, nursing room |
| 1F | Entrances, ticket offices, platforms, Hong Kong and Macau travel service centre |
| -1F | Transfer hall, taxi rank, exits to both squares, bus connections |
| -2F | Metro Lines 7 and 9, ticket offices, taxi rank, refund and change counters |
The two squares are connected underground, so you can enter on one side and leave on the other.

Electronic lockers are on the east and west sides of the 2F waiting hall, with more inside each waiting room. Storage runs on a 24-hour cycle and is charged by size and duration. Red-cap porters will carry bags to your carriage; agree the price before they lift anything.
First and business class passengers enter free with their ticket. Other travellers can usually buy access for around CNY 50, which covers seating, drinks and charging.
Wi-Fi is free in the waiting halls and on the concourses. Charging points are concentrated in the waiting rooms rather than at every seat, so a power bank saves a hunt. Signal drops on the lower levels.
The 2F waiting hall has a nursing room and a children's play area, which is unusual for a Chinese station of this age. The information desk near waiting room 2 arranges wheelchairs, and a medical centre sits between rooms 6 and 7.
| Option | Time | Cost | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Daxing Airport: Beijing–Xiong'an intercity train | 28–34 min | CNY 18–30 | Fastest option by far |
| Daxing Airport: metro via Caoqiao | 60–70 min | CNY 39–45 | Budget, no train seats left |
| Daxing Airport: taxi | 55 min | CNY 180 | Late night, heavy bags |
| Capital Airport: airport bus | 60–90 min | — | Direct, hourly from 06:00 |
| Capital Airport: taxi | 50 min | CNY 130 | Early flights |
The Beijing–Xiong'an intercity line is the reason to use this station for Daxing. Trains leave from the high-speed side and take under 35 minutes, and there are airline check-in counters inside Beijing West, so you can drop bags before boarding the train. It is faster and cheaper than the metro route and far more reliable in traffic than a taxi.
The same line continues to Xiong'an in under an hour, which makes a day trip to the new city straightforward.

| Spot | What it is | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 2F food court | International chains, hotpot, regional Chinese, noodles | Waiting hall |
| 1F shops | Bakeries, convenience stores, drinks | Entrance level |
| South square | Local restaurants and fast food | 5 min walk |
| Lianhuachi area | Neighbourhood restaurants, cheaper than the station | 10 min walk |
For a long wait, the 2F food court is the practical choice. For anything better, walk 10 minutes west into the Lianhuachi neighbourhood where prices drop by a third.
| Area | Why stay here | To the station | Price band |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lianhuachi / Liuliqiao | Closest hotels, quiet, good for early trains | 5–15 min on foot or one metro stop | Budget to mid |
| Military Museum / Gongzhufen | Line 9 and Line 1 access, malls, business hotels | 2 metro stops | Mid |
| Qianmen / Dashilan | Hutong hotels, walk to Tiananmen | 25 min by taxi | Mid |
| Financial Street | Upper-range business hotels | 20 min by taxi | Upper |
If your train leaves before 08:00, stay in Lianhuachi. The security queue at Beijing West starts building at 06:30 and a 15-minute walk beats a 40-minute taxi.
How early should I arrive at Beijing West Railway Station?
60–90 minutes. It is the busiest of Beijing's stations, the walk from entrance to waiting room is long, and security queues build quickly after 06:30.
Which metro lines serve Beijing West?
Lines 7 and 9, on -2F. They are cross-platform interchange, so changing lines is often a step across the platform.
Which waiting room do I need?
Rooms 1–7 serve K, T and Z trains; rooms 8–13 serve G and D trains. The departure board lists the room number next to your train.
How do I get to Daxing Airport from Beijing West?
Take the Beijing–Xiong'an intercity train, 28–34 minutes for CNY 18–30. It is faster than the metro and more predictable than a taxi.
Are there direct trains to Hong Kong?
Yes, two G trains a day to West Kowloon, taking 8–10 hours. Immigration happens on arrival in Hong Kong, not at Beijing West.
Can I leave luggage at Beijing West?
Yes, electronic lockers on both sides of the 2F waiting hall and inside each waiting room, charged by size and duration for up to 24 hours.
How far is Beijing West from the Forbidden City?
About 8 km, roughly 20 minutes by taxi or 25–45 minutes by metro depending on the interchange.
Do I need a printed ticket?
No. Your passport is the ticket for entry, security and the gate.
