Intro to The Sonic of Voice, Sound and Poetry | The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery

Oct 8, 2024 (UTC-5)
Toronto
Arts
Please join us for the Intro to The Sonic of Voice, Sound, and Poetry, led by dub poet and performer Clifton Joseph and composer and poet Jaap Blonk! This is a beginner-friendly workshop for poets, writers and artists drawn to the undeniable power of sound, language and the poetics of sonics combined. Thinking about sound from the perspective of experimentation and new poetics, from the field of Sound Poetry, Spoken Word and Dub Poetry and learning a bit about their histories, “Exploring Voice, Sound and Poetry” will allow writers (and artists) to explore and engage with sound, musicality, and language-play as poetry. Clifton Joseph is an Antiguan-born dub poet extraordinaire who lives in Toronto and performs solo and with musicians, exploring the intrinsic musicality of words in his poetry. A founding member of the dub poetry movement in Canada, he has performed widely across that country, the USA, the UK, Europe, Egypt and the Caribbean with his sonic-laden wordplay exploring historical and contemporary issues. He's worked in TV, Radio and Film, taught college courses and released books and albums such as Metropolitan Blues and Oral Trans/Missions. His work has been included in a number of anthologies and has garnered wide alternative radio play. He's worked in TV, Radio and Film, taught college courses and released books and albums such as Metropolitan Blues, Oral Trans/Missions His work has been included in a number of anthologies and has garnered wide alternative radio play. His latest album of poetry and music is Shots On Eglinton. Jaap Blonk (born 1953 in Woerden, Netherlands) is a self-taught composer, vocalist, poet and visual artist. His unfinished studies in mathematics and musicology mainly created a penchant for activities in a Dada vein, as did several unsuccessful jobs in offices and other well-organized systems. In the early 1980s he discovered the power and flexibility of his voice and set out on a long-term research of phonetics and the possibilities of the human voice. At present, he has developed into a specialist in the creation and performance of sound poetry and a unique vocal improviser, supported by a powerful and uninhibited stage presence. He performs and gives workshops worldwide on a regular basis. With the use of live electronics and projection of visuals the scope and range of his concerts has acquired a considerable extension. To this date Blonk’s music has appeared on 30 CDs with his own Kontrans label; many other recordings as well as about a dozen books with his visual work have been published in several countries. MAY IT HAVE A HAPPY ENDING - Minelle Mahtani | Massey College

Arts
Literary Arts
Join us for the launch of MAY IT HAVE A HAPPY ENDING, by Minelle Mahtani! In conversation with David Chariandy. Masks are strongly encouraged and will be available. ABOUT THE BOOK: For readers of Crying in H Mart and In the Dream House, a searing, intimate and blisteringly honest memoir about mothers and daughters, grief and healing, and finding your voice. Minelle Mahtani had taken a leap of faith. A new mother in a new life, she'd moved across the country for love, and soon found herself facing the exciting and terrifying prospect of hosting her own radio show. But as she began to find her place in the majority white newsroom, she was handed devastating news: her Iranian mother had been diagnosed with tongue cancer. Just as Minelle was finding her voice, her mother was losing hers. What does it mean to amplify the voices of others while the stories of your ancestors are being buried in your mother's mouth? Why do we cling to superstition and luck when we’ve lost all faith in healing those we love? And how do we juggle bearing the burden of looking after an ill parent when we are trying to parent our own children? In exquisitely lyrical and inventive prose, Mahtani recounts the experience so many of us recognize: a life calibrated through calculating when to speak and when to be silent in a world that feels like it forces us to be broken. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Minelle Mahtani is an associate professor at the Institute for Social Justice at the University of British Columbia. She was formerly a radio host, a national television news journalist at the CBC and a journalism and geography professor at the University of Toronto. Her work in radio has won a Canadian Ethnic Media Association award for building relationships between ethnic communities and Indigenous communities, and a British Columbia Association of Broadcasters award for best community service reporting. She also won a Digital Publishing Award for an essay she published in The Walrus, which became the basis for her debut memoir, May It Have a Happy Ending. She lives in Vancouver. ABOUT THE MODERATOR: David Chariandy lives in Vancouver and teaches literature and creative writing in the department of English at Simon Fraser University. His first novel, Soucouyant, was nominated for several prizes, including the Governor General’s Award and the Scotiabank Giller Prize. His second novel, Brother, was also nominated for several prizes, winning the Rogers Writers’ Trust Fiction Prize, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, and the Toronto Book Prize. Brother was also named a book of the year by The Globe and Mail, The National Post, The Toronto Star, The Montreal Gazette, The New York City Public Library, Kirkus Reviews, Esquire Magazine, and The Guardian. His most recent book is a memoir entitled I’ve Been Meaning To Tell You: A Letter To My Daughter. David’s writings have been published internationally and translated into a dozen languages. In 2019, he was awarded Yale University’s Windham-Campbell Prize for fiction. Information Source: Another Story Bookshop | eventbrite

Participants should be prepared to attend each session date to get the most out of this workshop. Participants will receive email reminders directly from Evergreen. Please reach out to festivals_activations@evergreen.ca if you have any questions. Dates: October 8, 15, 22, and 29. About the workshop Alebrijes are fantastical and imaginative creatures that come from our dreams. They are a unique blend of animal, human, plant, and flower characteristics, whether living or dead. Pedro Linares, 'the Alebrijes creator, ' crafted them from paper mache, wire, and flour glue called 'engrudo ', materials that are deeply rooted in Mexican folk art and culture. 'engrudo' is a sight to behold with its vibrant colours and intricate decorations, sparking excitement and inspiration. This workshop offers a hands-on learning experience. You will create your own Alebrije from scratch. You will start by building the structure with wire and then add the paper mache, painting, decorating, and varnishing it to protect the paint. This workshop, led by Ana Gabriela Lopez Castro will guide participants through each step of the Alebrije-making process. This is a four-week workshop, with 2 hours for every session. Tuesdays in October All Materials will be provided Bio Ana Gabriela Lopez Castro, a Mexican visual artist residing in Toronto's East End, embarked on her artistic journey in 2000, initially exploring photography and printmaking as her preferred mediums of expression. Her work is a vibrant celebration of Mexican folk art, often featuring her unique handcrafted alebrijes and fantastical creatures brought to life through paper mache. Her deep-rooted love for her cultural heritage and the natural world is a constant theme in her art. With a bachelor's degree in Visual Arts from the Faculty of Arts and Design at UNAM in Mexico City and an Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design from Centennial College, Ana Gabriela Lopez Castro has honed her skills and expertise in the field of visual arts. Her collaboration with Muse Arts since 2013 is a testament to her dedication and passion for her craft. In 2019, Ana Gabriela Lopez Castro founded the Emotionart Collective art group. This transformative initiative brings intergenerational art workshops to different communities, such as Toronto Community Housing buildings, c.co-ops, and food banks. Ana's vision and dedication are bringing about positive change in these communities.
